Red Dead 3/Red Dead Redemption 2 - IT'S HAPPENING.gif

The honor system is even more incomprehensible and broken in Red Dead 1. I was just finishing up the gang hideout mission in Twin Rocks, Cholla Springs and you have to save a ranchers wife and I didn't shoot the guy holding her hostage in time so I lost 200 honor. What sense does that make? Is the assumption I let her be killed? It's bullshit. The whole honor system makes no sense.

That's a double standard of what the open world can allow versus the story that the game is trying to tell. Now, imagine with all the money you've accumulated through whatever means gets drained for story purposes. You want absolute freedom, but then you question the story in spite of your perceived freedom.

As an aside, there's a barf emote where your character COULD ACTUALLY vomit. Vomit actually stays on the surface for a couple minutes. Great attention to detail.
Mafia 2 did that with your money, but Mafia 2 wasn't a R* styled open world game and you really couldn't do a lot of things with money on that game. You could buy guns, clothes, tune your cars and bribe policemen, first two are kind of moot since you also had the option to rob gun shops and clothing stores. I wish someone managed to figure out how to make a game that perfectly balances the open world and the story.

this is a big problem with GTA as well, RDR2 to a lesser extent but still, I feel they are both far too on the rails to make sense as an open-world game in between missions in GTA is just do mission and the open world is just filler for the most part, I feel like RDR2 was slightly better with this but its still noticeable, Cyberpunk has its issues too, but I feel even that is more fun then R* Games

I haven't played RDO in months, and I'm greeted with:

$40 poker winnings from twenty minutes of play, two 100m crossbow kills in Last Man Standing, a random bounty event and $280 of moonshine sold.

Dead Eye makes Make It Count modes OP as ever. I didn't know you COULD target that far; it's practically aimbot with a bow.

i actually tried out RDO for the first time in awhile today, apparently it actually has some players despite barely getting any updates from Rockstar, I loaded into a full lobby on PC, its still pay to win as shit, but fun to dick around and free roam

Finally finishing up 100% tonight, just mopping up a few odds and ends. Definitely felt like more "busy work" than 100% completion of RDR1 but I guess I didn't mind because it gives you an excuse to wander around the world more than one might usually, though in practice the orchids and other parts of the exotics mission just results in a whole lot of riding around in the swamp. Hardest stuff was finding a fucking 3 star moose for whatever reason and the birds for the taxidermist. Only other things that were actually challenging were some of the shit like 'shoot off three hats in one dead eye" but if you piss off enough people in Van Horn you'll get it eventually, and learning how to play dominoes because I had no fucking idea how to play at first. Took me a few hours of just repeatedly losing to figure it out and now I actually kinda like it. The perfect moose, I spent three days [not entire days mind you, I have a job, but likely 2-3 hours at a time so a total of nine hours playtime roughly] running around to every moose spawn point and spotted a total of five, none three star.

To save someone else the frustration in the future, go to Cairn Lake which is east of Colter [the town you start the story in in the far north of the map], go out to the center of the frozen lake and throw 3-4 herbivore baits down. Make sure your horse isn't malingering around too close, make it flee if you have to. Immediately turn toward the map boundary [there's a hill/slope next to the lake] and sprint up there. Turn around and a moose should spawn to your left in the treeline and start going towards the bait. Both times I did this it was a three star moose, but it probably isn't every time but I was able to reproduce it twice in a matter of minutes.

Redditors complain about the Gambler challenges but since they're luck based, well, it's basically just that. Only the poker, fillet and dominoes ones require any skill and most of the complaints seem to be "I don't know how to play blackjack/poker or dominoes" but it is kinda bullshit because a lot of it relies on luck. Somehow I managed to knock out 8 through 10 in maybe a couple hours over two nights, others report playing blackjack for days on end.

Double-post, but; got RDR2 on sale recently, and I'm struggling to really do anything with it. The main game isn't all that interesting to me, so I've mostly been sticking to the Online mode, which... is a mixed bag. Not that I dislike it, it's honestly quite fun just loading it up and just vibing with the western aesthetic, but I've been having issues with a certain role that I've having to work with: Naturalist.

Frankly, the mechanics for the class are a bit backwards; the loon in charge gets pissed if you kill animals, even in self-defense or on accident... in a game where hunting is one of the core features and horses tend to run smaller animals over, meaning that you have to basically ignore most of the game just to focus on this one thing. Forgetting that detail temporarily, leveling the role is a chore, as you have to repeatedly tranquilize animals and collect DNA samples and then sell them to Harriet to get EXP. Sounds fine in theory, but in-game it means that you'll be stuck repeatedly shooting the same animal over and over with tranquilizer bullets in the Varmint Rifle, which gets boring FAST. You also get Naturalist EXP pretty slowly; even using the Emerald Ranch method, it'll still take a while going back and forth selling the samples and buying more rounds from Harriet, which adds to the tedium.

Doesn't help that Harriet's rather...unpleasant to deal with; she reminds me of some particularly detached vegans who demand that all hunting be stopped and insist that all animals live on a plant diet. Hell, she actually says that crap in-game...

Main reason why I'm even got involved? Outfit collection; the Legendary Animals that Harriet demands you protect can instead be hunted and turned into some unique outfits. I was after the Moonstone Wolf in particular, since it looks cool and I already had another wolf coat in my collection. Problem is, the selection of animals that Harriet offers is a random selection of 3 at a time, out of 12 possible ones, and it rotates every 50 minutes. Worse, when you unlock the missions at Rank 5 for Naturalist, she doesn't actually offer all of the animals right then; you unlock them at random as you level up Naturalist further, and it's still not unheard of for some animals to never unlock regardless. In fact, it's not unheard of for some people to reach max level and some missions still don't show up.

It's gotten to the point where I'm considering dropping the game; I've already completed just about everything else that I was interested in, aside from getting some gear from certain roles, but the sheer grind that is Naturalist is getting to me. Anyone got any suggestions for making the game fun again, or at least cut down on the tedium of Naturalist? Or should I just ditch it?

thats the first time ive heard anyone say that actually, the main draw of RDR2 for most people is the story (I guess thats why I enjoy Red Dead more then GTA V given how hard Rockstar focuses on GTA Online), I think Red Dead Online is actually kinda fun when you just dick around in the open world doing missions and hunting but Rockstar really gives it barebones support

That's exactly how I feel about Red Dead Redemption 2. Bought it on sale for $20, couldn't gel with the single player but was able to establish a footing on the online portion. You're not alone; there is a steep learning curve with understanding its mechanics and general economy.

I cannot speak for the Naturalist role as hunting isn't my thing with the RNG of how/where animals spawn in the world. I can suggest a couple guides for you on how that role works.

I don't want to overwhelm you with how the game works. I would definitely recommend a YouTuber named PvPCat as he provide guides and updates on the game's online as a start. He has definitely helped me get the most out of it.

Eh, I already got spoiled on basically the entire storyline of RDR2 beforehand, so I never got interested. It certainly sounds interesting, but... it's just not my thing I guess. Was more of a guy who always tried to "make my own fun", I guess.

I'll give a look at the guides, thanks. To be clear, it's not that I hate trying to level in the online portion; yeah, there's not the most amount of content, but I'm the type of guy who can find fun just about anywhere. My only real gripe right now is trying to level Naturalist, since it's so counter-intuitive to the rest of the game; especially since I'm having to grind for that wolf coat.

Still, thanks for the tips; I'll take a look, see what I can find.

The whole Naturalist role itself is counterintuitive with how Red Dead works. Firstly, you have to find animals to sedate for Harriet. Animal spawns can be wretched given how complex their spawning can be, and that's if it doesn't bug out. Now, if you kill a number of animals, even by accident, Harriet will scold you and spray you to some random spot on the map.

I don't think you get much money from her, just items. I think you get wildfire camps as well. Not worth it to me.

Keep an eye on monthly events for RDO. Sometimes, they can provide double, even triple, earnings for missions, roles and PvP. That could help with earning money and Gold, which would allow you to have more fun.

You can use the Emerald Ranch; it's a farmstead with a nearby fast travel station, and you can sedate 5 sheep and a number of cows in the area. Take them to Harriet for a few hundred EXP; not much, but it's basically the fastest guaranteed way of getting it. Aside from that, there's the poacher missions - where you murder a bunch of people basically because Harriet told you to - or the Legendary Animals, where you have to painstakingly track and sedate a rare animal to complete it. Heaven help you if the animal flees; just lost a Shadow Buck because it spotted me immediately and never gave me a chance to see it again.

Now, if you kill a number of animals, even by accident, Harriet will scold you and spray you to some random spot on the map.

Bear in mind, small animals LOVE to run underneath your horse and die, and those count as "your" kills as well. Also, since killing any animal will piss the loon off - even in self-defense against, say, a cougar or bear - that means that you either need to be constantly running away, dying, or trying to sedate the animal with the Varmint Gun's tranquilizer rounds... which take a good number and a good chunk of time to work.

I don't think you get much money from her, just items. I think you get wildfire camps as well. Not worth it to me.

Real reason why anyone puts up with it is the exclusive Legendary Animals; if you kill the animals Harriet sends you to, you can skin them and give the pelt to Gus, who'll craft a unique outfit for you. It's basically a trophy; the outfits tend to be too warm to wear for most weather without ill-effects - unless you use a specific glitch - but they're something of a status symbol/reward for tolerating Harriet's bullshit. I'm grinding for the Moonstone (white wolf) coat; looks better than the other two wolf coats.

Thanks for the advice; I'm trying to keep interest in the game, but the coat's the last thing I'm really wanting. Just particularly frustrating essentially getting stuck on the last step, you know?

When and if they make a RDR 3 what time period will it be set in?

RDR2 is already a prequel and anything later than RDR1 is no longer wild west. Although I would like to see Jack Marston's adventures.

Adventures as young dutch and the very early formation of the gang complete by the end of the game im guessing. it could also be another character's story happening in the same era.

It's Rockstar, so it'll probably be some overwritten faggy shit that wants to be a movie, but they should go for a new character and set it ~1875 at the peak of the Wild West. And let you play as an outlaw without the game punishing you for choosing the fun option.

Yeah, okay, the Frenchman isn't a tranny, but is your typical womanizing, ill-mannered Frenchman who has pissed off half of Saint Denis either by fucking their wives, owing them money, or dropping a fresh shit on their bar counters in the name of artistic expression, and has disguised himself as a woman so he can make his escape before someone kills him slowly and painfully. The whole thing is played up for laughs because he's clearly just a dude in a wig, dress, and bad makeup considering he's still got his facial hair, and that kiss is forced upon Arthur, who is unsurprisingly very unhappy about being forcibly kissed by a man in drag.

The rest of it is pretty spot-on though, sadly, although its funny how that anon doesn't mention Margaret, probably because Arthur shamelessly mocks him over his claiming to be a woman.

I honestly agree and there technically is still a way. The only pitch for RDR3 that interested me was a pitch I saw someone give in a youtube comments section. The gist of the idea was Jack fleeing north to the Yukon/Canada to avoid the WW1 draft (And or charges for killing Ross.) and trying to build a life for himself now that he can't return to America. It's probably the last and so far closest area for Jack to go that's still wild enough.

I have no interest in another fucking prequel tbh and I feel like another prequel featuring the Van Der Linde gang would be milking it at this point, the only other option I'd like would be something unexpected like a new character or even bringing back Red Harlow, that'd be a welcome shock.

But we all know what's actually going to be is RDR3 is going to very predictably follow one of the two dead Van Der Linde gang members mentioned during Chapter 2 and then are never fucking brought up again. It's so obviously planted and left incredibly vague so R* can just do whatever they want with them. The end of the game will probably be the Blackwater Massacre or something predictable like that.
