I agree wholeheartedly, I have no idea why they do this. They do it with race too, they never shut up about how horrible they are for being white while at the same time being so aggressively white and wealthy it's painful. On the other hand, they get really pissy if anybody around them does something too "foreign" to them.
I assume they do the exact same thing in France? "Wait no, you can't do X thing, that's not my ideals!"

The U.S. has a perverse system where if you show up with an asylum claim at the border (or get caught in the process of illegally entering and then make an asylum claim), the default is you're kept in some kind of detention until it's decided, which could be years, often an actual prison with convicted criminals. And of course the family is split up in the meantime because they don't send kids to prison.

However, if you enter, even illegally, and are inside the border, and then make an asylum claim, the default if you don't have some other issue other than the illegal entry is that you stay out on immigration bond of some sort while your claim is made.

Now if someone outside the country consults an immigration lawyer, the lawyer won't tell them directly to do this, since it's unlawful to counsel a crime. Well, not usually, some will, but they'd get in trouble if they got caught somehow. However, they will let the client know that this is the case, just not say "so break the law and you'll be better off."

This isn't uniformly the case, but it's seriously perverse to punish people for going through the lawful process while simultaneously treating people whose first act in the country is entering illegally better.

legally you can't stop it, no.
but on a personal level, there's a world of difference between just meekly saying ok, or threatening to raise hell and fight tooth and nail no matter the cost.
basically if you make it clear that in case of divorce you are going scorched earth, then she will think twice about doing that shit over minor nonsense.
but if you are a spineless doormat who will make divorce convenient and easy for her by willingly cooperating with the process and paying the bills, then she has no reason to hesitate.

Almost anything you can possibly do to stay out of divorce court is better than being in divorce court. I think the worst behavior I've ever seen was from two lawyers getting divorced. They both turned into bitter, evil fucks who hated the entire world. I'd rather be living in a van down by the river than ever end up like that.

Agreed.
On top of that, it's for the best imo. People who end up resenting their kids because of misplaced stresses are a dime a dozen.
It could have definitely been handled better, have her stay there for the night. I know it's just a kid being a brat but being told that could honestly hurt, especially the "I wish stepdad was my REAL dad!"

It was definitely cruel but I guess it taught her 1 of 2 things, words have consequences or words can get her what she wants if this is something she really wanted, especially if they spoil her after to make up for the abandonment.
