"Industry experience" for programmers is next to impossible to acquire for people who didn't have impeccable college pedigrees. Management is of the opinion that you can offshore almost all junior roles and have a few senior developers in the US micromanage them. This never works and you'll end up re-doing most of the Indians' code: they will never admit that they don't understand something you said; they'll just agree, and the next day you get to re-do all of their work.
The standard approach for programmers is to have a stage of your interview which is an Introduction to Algorithms quiz-show. It's not really that hard if you actually passed college, but brushing up on your self-balancing tree algorithms (which you almost never use) before every single interview is extremely annoying.

Yeah it's a bit odd because being an engineering grad doing research means you are basically the only person on the planet who has hands on experience with a particular engineering field while being a CS grad is being paid to do odd jobs for the engineering department.
