Valve used to make games. If you experienced HL, CS, HL2, portal, TF2, HL episodes as they released you'd probably think they were amazing. Just like someone who experienced WC2, SC, WC3, WOW, SC2 would be a blizzard fan. The problem is that they remain fans even when it's obvious the studio is long gone.
I was both of these at the time. I still don't understand why devs didn't make way more expansions to such beloved games. I know WoW became a thing, but they still could've pumped out more expansions to WC3 and later SC2. You've got the engine, you've got the working formula, just add more content. I guess it just isn't as profitable as adding endless content to MMOs.

They were perfectionists that worked with small skilled teams. As AAA gaming rapidly required more and more hands to make, the auteurship of games died. They also both got access to money printers that removed the pressure to put out SOMETHING (wow/steam respectively)..
Valve pushed through HL1 with a inner council they forced others to make stuff. HL2 was a very painful and long dev cycle but they had limited money so it came out at some point. Episodes were shorter but not good enough. HL3 was supposed to be the next big leap, but with infinite money and a flat organisation they had no pressure to just knuckle down and force the game into existence. Getting 50 people to agree and work on a game is hard, getting 200 people to agree and work on a game is impossible. At some point you have to say that 20 people have creative input, and the others suck it up and work.
For blizzard WOW was such a big hit it broke them. MMOs seemed like the next big thing, when icefrog came to pitch "DOTA but not a mod" he was laughed out of the room. MMOs were printing money so why fuck around with some WC3 mod? After TBC the A team went to work on titan, the followup MMO (the idea that an MMO would last forever rather than get a sequel like a normal game was still around) while the B team kept WOW going. Titan ended up being a huge disaster. WOW had to keep on going far beyond its natural limits. SC2 didnt have everyone pay blizzard 15$ per month like WOW did. Even when they split it into 3 games it didn't make as much money. Hell, they gave away WOL for free by the end of LOTV. HS is printing money because of card packs. HOTS didnt become as big as DOTA or LOL so it got executed. Diablo 3 and 4 both had their online player counts eclipsed by D2 within months after their respective releases. The old guard were given a lot of money, salary and stock when WOW was a megahit, so they had to be removed.

So now you have two studios that ones made genre defining games that can no longer pull it together to actually make new games. Instead they sustain themselves on old glory. The few fans that are left are just delusional retards.

I think this subreddit having this specific name is hilarious because it's one of the few things that definitionally, unambiguously excludes MtFs.
That was the original intention, to make a truly women oriented subbreddit, but obviously it didn't play out that way

I'm just going to assume non-Americans have never played "smear the queer" so for those curious it's a game where you take a football (not soccer ball, an American football) and somebody throws it up in the air and everybody tries to catch it, whoever catches it is the "queer" and everybody else tries to tackle them. Then when they get tackled they throw the ball in the air and the cycle continues. There's not really any winning or teams, it's just a violent game of tackling the guy carrying the ball but it was a lot of fun.

I remember playing it a lot growing up in the 2000's but I don't know if kids still play it now or not.
Sadly most schools have banned it and the kids today call it "tackle the carrier." We used to also play a basketball version of smear the queer back in middle school. Same game but you had to try and make a basket, if you made the basket you got 2 points, or of course hit a 3 it was a 3 pointer. If you got tackled you lost the ball, person with most points wins. We called it combat basketball after the SNES game "Bill Lambeer's Combat Basketball."
