I have to give this plebbitor credit though, this is actually true. I bullied numerous teachers, some to the point they left the profession, and I was told, though I am suspicious of this claim, that I was personally responsible for my cunt fourth grade teacher going into a mental institution. I remember that bitch, she was already nuts, it wasn't my fault. I wuz framed!

Usually. I felt really horrible once after bullying a teacher (a really nice one) and then, I later saw her crying in her office. I knew it was me. I took a solemn oath at that moment that I would never, ever bully anyone ever again. Unless I actually wanted to see them cry.

It's not that interesting, but if you're curious:
In grade 3 or 4 we had a teacher that was a complete asshole and probably enjoyed yelling/punishing the students. He had this fucked up drill sergeant mentality towards 7 - 8 year old kids.

he’d leave the classroom whenever we had “creative period” and a nice, young teacher in training would takeover for about an hour. We were under constant stress from our asshole teacher, so having her was a complete relief at first.

However we began, collectively and instinctively, seeing how weak she was. We smelled it. Whenever she would teach we transformed her "creative period" into fucking pandemonium. We could even get away with openly mocking her and bullying her appearance. Really fucked up.

She became completely powerless and would sometimes cry, I think she didn't tell the other teachers because she knew our main teacher was borderline abusive, so she let us have our way. Nothing would ever get done during that period, but as soon as our main teacher would come back we'd go back to bootcamp.

I'd feel terrible about doing it at the time, and I think the others did too, but we kept on doing it because we could.

Not even close. Do you have a single parent or live in an urban environment by any chance? If you had bullied a teacher where I grew up your dad would have beat the shit out of you. All the teachers were decent people and even the fat one people would joke about was never targeted to upset her in any way. Actively trying to upset a teacher would of been an immediate suspension from the school, a report home and then an ass kicking for any child.

Nah the redditor is right. Most parents cannot believe their little angel will do anything wrong so the teachers have to work with spoiled brats. It's impossible to discipline them because most parents will either not care or think that the teacher is wrong.
As a young, idealistic woman (typical teacher profile) they start, believing that they can be the cool teacher who reaches out to those misunderstood kids like in all their favorite movies and shows and books but the truth is that they are horribly out of touch and the problem kids just want them to shut up so they can go back to doing delinquent shit. It's problem with at least three causes that I can recognize:
1) Culture of parents thinking their children cannot do any wrong and parents not trusting schools
2) (New) Teachers thinking they can reach out easily to troubled children and can help years of psychological problems by just being nice
3) Years and years of No-Child-Left-Behind when the truth is that you cannot save everyone and sometimes, the dregs of the class are the dregs for a reason.

Character is the prerequisite for upbringing, not its result.

I convinced a tiny year 7 that a pregnant teacher's surname was Carriage (she wanted to be nice and congratulate her but didn't know her name), so she had some kid run up to her and happily try to get her attention by saying something like "Hey, Miss Carriage!". Two-for-one, baby.

I only felt bad about doing that because I got fired for it.

It is firmly rooted in the Enlightenment. The idea of "education the child to be [x]" stretches as far back as the French Revolution and even Jean Jacques Rousseau. An essential part of it is the idea of equality: all are equal in capabilities and only the circumstances of life have made any difference. A child is not smarter than another, he just had a head start b/c of his parents, an uncle who introduced him to it, etc etc. On the other hand, no child is dumber than any other, it just did not see new stuff before. These policy makers consistently think that people can be made smarter and more responsible solely through education.

No child left behind is thus intended that the children that are a bit behind (because of circumstances, everyone is equal!) get some extra help and reach the same level as their smarter more advanced peers.

Of course, if not everyone was equal in capability, then what? If nature had even the slightest impact? Even if you would start in a completely equal situation, that situation would not remain equal for not even a single generation. Small divergences would become larger and larger until there are wide divides in society. Inequality would rise and rise until there is a crisis that wipes out lots of progress or inequality is artificially reduced through wealth transfers, progressive taxes, land reform etc. And that is exactly what happens. If you look into the history of inequality, then you'll see that it keeps rising and rising until there is a major crisis like a natural disaster (from earthquakes, to famine, to pandemics) or a major war, economic crash in the capitalist system etc etc. And if not everyone is equal, then why do they all deserve the same say in politics? Why would someone who cannot even take care of himself have the same political worth as someone who takes care of a household and his own company?

So why do people do it? Why do people act as if this delusion is truth? Plenty of reasons. Some are true idealists who believe that all men are equal. Others are powerhungry demagogues that play on the weak and powerless, and translate their grievances into political power. Others have a pure slave mentality and are just jealous and resent people who are more successful then them. (This last one you see on reddit often).


I'm going off on a tangent but TL ; DR :
No child left behind is because of a deep belief in the equality of man, which is the basis of the modern world. Its a holy cow you cannot touch because otherwise the entire fabric of modern society will start to unravel. And that cannot happen, so they have to support the weakest and hope nobody notices.
