Sonichu Redeeming Sonichu: is a good rewrite even possible?

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I have half a mind to produce a spinoff/sequel to Sonichu that puts a little more thought into the characters' relationships and emotions, rather than merely how they glorify Chris. It could touch on multiple generations' worth of parents not quite doing right by their children and seeking unhealthy coping mechanisms for their problems. There's a lot of accidental potential there.

Well do it! Draw up some concepts, script it out, sketch it, ink it, maybe color it, post it on the Fan art thread, eventually make your own thread. Do it all man! It’s worth it.

I don't know how you can realistically rewrite sonichu, given all the history behind it such as villains based on real people, the massively derrivitive nature, the poor writing and a littany of other problems that can make only reimagining or flat out rebooting it the only real viable option

Just have Chris gain sonichu powers and bring in his comic characters to life in his home after a personal tragedy of some sort, the death of bob or barb being a likely pick. They have various misadventures in trying to be heroes or make ends meet in a monster of the week/event of the week style show. (harmless fluff for the most part but the stuff most saturday morning cartoons are based on)

I Would Write Out Chris Entirely, Only have him Cameo in .4th wall Jokes.
Probably would also make it so that the 4th Wall Cameos Are Chris turning on his PlayStation 3 Camera-thing and writting Logs about his life, at the end of the comic Chris would’ve gone Insane at this point and the video would continue until The Fire.

My serious answer is to make it self-aware and play up the ridiculousness of it all, because you couldn't make any of the characters into anything meaningful without completely stripping them of the "qualities" Chris has imparted to them. A Sonic the Hedgehog/Pokémon crossover story is impossible to make serious without it looking like really terrible, edgy fan-fiction. At the end of the day, no matter how "serious" you tried to make it, it's still a story about unoriginal Sonic-recolors fighting the evil forces of "growing up and being an adult." I don't think it could work as anything other than a ridiculous comedy Sgt. Frog-style where the characters constantly break the 4th wall and make fun of themselves, the universe they're inhabiting, and the sheer ridiculousness of it all.

My A-Log answer is to just nuke the comic from existence because there's no redeeming it. But that wouldn't be nearly as fun.

Well if it's really possible to even improve a horrible webcomic like Sonichu then I'd simply reboot it as a satirical comedy that pokes fun at the common traits that all bad fanfiction has to begin with rather than being a serious story.

I'd introduce the character Sonichu himself as someone that knows he's a 'Gary Stu' and resents his own existence, I'd introduce Rosechu as someone that knows that she's boring as all shit and she is nothing but a generic 'Mary Sue' character, I'd also introduce Chris-Chan himself as your average everyday online delusional fanfiction writer that thinks he's the center of the universe but fails to understand that everyone thinks that his stories are really just shit, I'd keep all of the pop culture references as a running gag to show the reader of why adding a pointless reference to pop culture doesn't necessarily make a story funny, I'd make Mary Lee Walsh as the only smart and competent character in the webcomic that always wins and with Sonichu himself really not giving a shit, and I would purposely make everyone in CWCville as a bunch of incompetent morons.

Pretty much the way I see it the only way to make Sonichu somewhat better is have it being self-aware and make fun of itself for how shitty the whole story is in all.

My idea is to make it not a comic but a musical animatic thing. Maybe one day.

Give it to a talented writer and artist. Say for example Neal Gailman writes and Alex Ross draws it lol.

But to top Chris...version? just give it to a bunch of teenagers making fanfiction, that would be already an improvement.

This is like asking if you can revamp The Room into a Cannes level film. If it were even possible, it would be completely beside the point of why that movie attracted attention in the first place and why people still watch it today.

The central character is, get this... a combination of Sonic.. /and/ Pikachu! - Like, that brilliant concept is the zenith of Chris' creativity and the primary purpose he really even has for living apart from constantly gaming and chasing China. Which, all these years later is still really funny if you stop to ponder it for a few seconds. It's just fine the way it is, but in no way could such a trite idea ever be any normal-ish person's (above the age of 10 maybe) idea of "good"

On top of that, Sonichu only even came into being because Chris was told "no" on using Sonic for that dumb cd cover art project. Chris was only that creative because he was forced to be.

Imagine what would have happened had the teacher just let Chris put Sonic on a piece of paper that day.

I don't know if it would be possible to ever make it good. However, if I were to take a stab at it I would give CWCville a dystopian spin with Chris as its petulant, near-omnipotent, manchild overlord. Make the characters semi-aware of some kind of mind control he has over them, forcing Sonichu and Rosechu into an immediate relationship to fulfill his own fantasies and such. Over time, Chris becomes more emotionally unstable, prompting rebellion. Chris actually would make for an interesting villain, vindictive one scene and childish and goofy the next.

I used to be very into the idea of making a “good” Sonichu years ago. Had loads of fun ideas. But it’s folly. Sonichu is Christine’s art. Not “good” exactly, but far more interesting in compelling than just about anything coming from Marvel or a lot of contemporary creatives.

Attempting to create a good Sonichu is actually to become Chris and make your own Sonichu, and to, like Chris, make a form of your mind and your experience in the form of Sonichu.

Ultimately all you’d be doing is creating a commentary on Sonichu. Or a work that’s more about your personal experience of Sonichu.

Sonichu inspired stuff is great, but a remake or, god forbid, a “good” version just ultimately doesn’t make much sense and would, by its nature (if it’s a true “good” version and sticks to the soul of what makes the comic so weirdly fascinating) he as much an indictment of its creator as it would be a critique of Chris.

Which is fine but to pull it off you’d have to commit to going full artfag literary creative idiot. Which is a noble thing to do.

Also there’s nothing more embarrassing and unimaginative than wanting to do a grimdark dystopian CWCville. That ideas has been done to death, resurrected then done to death again.

My ideal CWC inspired art piece is basically a Kafka-esque Lars Von Trier film about Cogs and their disgust in all they see of themselves reflected in Chris and their crushing realization that ultimately, even Chris is better than them.

And also about Chris stuck in a false reality of false girlfriends but too god damn foolish to suspect the malicious forces at work.
