Regular Car Reviews - Red Letter Media - Car Edition

I did some thinking and at this point I believe RCR has become very similar to the shitty old youtube channel "Everything wrong with". Both started around 10 years ago doing goofy little 2-5 minute videos ironically talking about their subject matter. As the years go on, the videos get longer and they start to develop an ego. At this point, the new videos they're making end up having both personal opinons, edgy jokes, and ironic humor so it's not really possible to discern what they're even saying. Neither of them will ever be a proper resource for anything in their sector

The dumbest shit Mr. Regular said that I can remember was that the Dodge Challenger was a family car since it was based on the same platform as a Charger, which is a four-door. Is that a fact? opinion? joke? I think he wants to be an authority on vehicles and I'm sure people value his videos as "reviews", but they aren't and won't be for some time. They're little more than comedy skits at the moment. I hope this doesn't come off as "no fun allowed" shit. More just saying you can't be a legitimate authority when you can't discern if you're serious, joking, or just uninformed.

His totally uneducated video about the E46 330ci turned me off from him. It's pretty clear he doesn't have a passion for cars and as others mentioned above, only sees them as literary tools to make some other flawed societal commentary. What do you expect from a furry?
Don't get me wrong I still watch his reviews but I don't count on him for real information on cars.

When I found out that he's gay it made a lot of sense with his frustrated freak outs in the middle of his reviews. It's reminds me a lot of this: 28c.png
If someone acts like a sex pest they probably are one. Look at Louis CK that guy talked about jerking off a lot and that's what did him in. Dan Schneider squeezed a lot of feet jokes into shows I watched growing up. Pretty sure he's a confirmed sex pest. If RCR makes a lot of jokes about prostate play that's definitely what he's into.

Not saying that I don't like his videos they just hit different in the past few years. A lot of phoned in reviews lately

Can we talk about how much Roman sucks I really dislike that guy. He comes off pathetic

Wait, did he actually come out of the closet or is the assumption that "furry = butt sex haver"? Because in early videos at least he occasionally talked about having girlfriends in the past.

Literally every time I had to hear Roman's "music", I'd quote a great philosopher out loud:

Also, he's not that bright and his full videos aren't interesting at all and I definitely wouldn't have sex with either one of them.

You can still be gay and have had a previous girlfriend

It is impossible to have a girlfriend and be a farmer

It might be the cunt in me talking but it feels like a case of wanting to have his cake and eat it too- Like he wants to shoot his mouth off about car du jour with a kneejerk opinion formed around the time one of their owners wedgied him or took his favorite parking spot at Wegman's, couch it in enough purple prose that his English degree didn't feel like a waste of time and sprinkle just enough about the car on top so people don't see he's just grinding an ax. And hey, if it gets pointed out the core of his screed was based on a flat wrong understanding or blatant ignorance; RCR is a literally analysis! What are you some kind of fag that cares about "facts?" Minutiae minutiae, go read a Chilton's if want a writer to be "technically correct," nerd. It's particularly tiresome because he'll take a shit tone and become very elitist talking on things he actually cares about like skiing or American literature.

If his history on macrophile.org is to be believed he's more into banging section 8 housing blocks to completion.

Is that like a reverse giantess thing?

My position on RCR is somewhat similar, I think. I went from being a big fan of his content to kinda feeling burnt out by it to disliking most of it nowadays.

This isn't some sort of amazing insight on my part - he's basically admitted it - but Mr Regular likes to focus more on the nebulous social connotations wrapped around cars than the actual technical details of a car itself. IE what does wanting a Mustang GT say about a person, what does the Corvette represent in society, etc, stuff like that.

It's an interesting angle to take, and has lead to some interesting content. The problem is that as the channel has gone on it feels like Mr Regular has resorted to more and more lazy stereotyping and inane pseudo-academic sociological rants as the novelty of his videos began to wear off. He often goes into these reviews with preconceived notions of a car based on what he thinks of it (before having ever driven it) and its owners and ends up going on long rants that seem entirely divorced from reality. Nobody expects RCR to be a great source for accurate technical information, but it would be nice if he actually gave more of the vehicles he drives a fairer shake instead of yelling angrily about stuff that he doesn't know about. The AE86 video that you mention is clearly rooted in a dislike of people who are fans of the cars due to Initial D (I mean, he spends a good chunk of the video just shouting "weeaboo") and the result of that is his attempt to "own" said fans by pointing out that the car is actually an AE88 and not an AE86 without realizing that most people don't give a shit about that.

His lack of knowledge and seeming unwillingness to do any research also leads him to stick his foot in his mouth on a regular basis. I checked out his recent review of the Toyota Avalon and immediately became confused by his claim that the car was made obsolete by the Lexus LS. Why would anyone buy an Avalon instead of an LS? Oh I don't know, maybe the fact that the LS costs like twice as much? Semi-luxury crossovers have made the Avalon kind of obsolete. Not the Lexus LS.

In other words, Mr Regular doesn't really have a firm grounding in either the technical side of cars or the social side of things that he often acts like an expert on. Sometimes he does get things really right, and there are still plenty of reviews on his channel that I think are genuinely funny and re-watchable. Some of his newer reviews are pretty good, mostly those that are of vehicles made by the American big three. Much of his content though feels like "angry man yelling at clouds" these days.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has felt this as well. At first it was somewhat humorous to basically roast the stereotypical people who own a certain car, but now it feels more like projection where he's using these reviews as a thinly veiled way to vent his opinions on the people who he believes owns these cars (namely boomers, gym bros, and anyone who made fun of him in high school).

I felt it especially in the episode about the Audi TT where he said that the only reason men don't want an Audi TT is because they're insecure. While ignoring that someone could just not want an Audi TT because they don't like it or for any number of reasons.

Unrelated, but what I thought was the funniest moment was when he tried to explain how to pick up women is by getting rid of the fedora... and then trading it for a Miata. As if the person you want to take advice from when it comes to attracting women is a gay furry who over analyses everything.

i used to watch his videos quite a while ago. i don't really find him funny anymore. correct me if i'm wrong (i heard this from /o/ so it might be BS) but did he really go on a rant about how being gay was so hard in the 90s or something like that in one of his newer vids? if that's true this dude is borderline lolcow material.

I have no love lost for the guy and I flip flopped on making a thread about him for a while but most of the spectacle shit with him that was noteworthy or hilarious is years gone- But he's just too damn depressing for even really lolcow material- Like his life is just this socially awkward recluse dying for someone to hug him. He's been around long enough to not flip out over or generally react to prodding, anything on his extended media is milquetoast as fuck. He does occasionally fire off with some things seemingly said with his foot in his mouth but that's nothing to really bite into. Unless you're some kind of sperg like me taking his technical ignorance as a personal sleight you'll probably just get sad trying to wring anything outta him.

He actually did. The funny thing is that video was also to shill his Toyota Sera for sale on Cars and Bids. It starts at 4:07.

TL;DW: he goes on a spiel about how he hated high school because his teachers made fun of him for being queer or something and the car is some sort of escapism for him.

I won't deny that the car is good, specially with the Gullwing Doors alone, but his faggotry ruins it.

While Mr Regular and his car reviews are pretty much insuferable nonsense, and have been for a good long while Roman's long form content has been stellar, unlike his music. His pieces on Mikey Thompson, Lee Iacocca, the Edsel and the Daimler Chrysler merger were all fantastic and I expect his new piece on SAAB to be the same. He seems to be the one with a real passion for cars and their history and in those works it really comes through.

He sounds like he's recording it under his bed trying not to wake up his parents

What's this revisionist history shit? Your sexual preferences have been suspect even out of your own mouth for a long time Brian. Fuck even as late as one of the times he recorded a diary going to that one gaming convention he spent half of it talking about how he lusted over a 'beautiful androgynous they' he saw.

God this video was insufferable to listen to. I sort of miss the old videos when he didn't make them so centered around himself. I get the feeling that he really likes the sound of his own voice in this video. He's somehow made the recent videos even less about the subject matter and more of a personal diary as of late. I can't help but contrast him to AVGN in this regard.

It's known that AVGN desired to be a film maker first and just happened to fall into doing the youtube channel was a way for him to pay bills and get a start. However the difference between him and RCR is he never let it detract from giving his original core audience what they wanted which was for him to dress as a nerd, talk about games and do dumb skits. He never injected his personal beliefs into his character. He's stayed fairly consistent and it paid off as several other youtubers who are as old as him have fallen off the horse long ago, while he keeps going.

I'm not claiming to be an expert or anything on this sort of thing, but I notice certain signs before someone starts falling off. The takeaway from all this is pretty simple. Just give people what they want and don't try to shape it into what you want it to be and expect that people have to like it.
