Report: EA Is Remastering The ‘Mass Effect’ Trilogy At Long Last (Unconfirmed)

The original picture of Tali was a stock photograph they made purple.

Here it is:

Side by side. Look at the no-effort hand/fingers. This was supposed to be a big deal in the last game of the series and they gave an intern a lunch break to photoshop something.

Someone on the internet fixed the hand.

yeah, I remember when that fact came out, same with the final blue planet picture being pretty much a ripoff or "heavily inspired".

still, 9 years later it is what it is. they might have just shopped a stock photo, but in the end that still more than brown human tali they're going with now.

It has all the hallmarks of being pushed by middle management, who has little clue on what the consumer wants except "MASS EFFECT" and "MAKE IT SO THAT ITS DIFFERENT FROM 3 SINCE MARKETING SAID PEOPLE DISLIKED IT". And of course, the studio whom they entrusted this to was incompetent, so it simply spiraled from there. Oh, and Bioware Montreal got shuttered after Andromeda, to tell you how bad the fuck up was.
it wasn't really a bioware studio anyway, it got just rebranded for andromeda so people would buy it because OMG A BIOWARE GAME. ironically the same people also did the me3 multiplayer, so there's that too. maybe they should've stick to that.
otoh to be fair edmonton pretty much burned the franchise to the ground with me3, I don't think even a good game would've saved them from that.

They decided ME3 multiplayer was a better use of their time IIRC
probably because it work better on consoles since it's just small arenas and horde wave mode is piss easy to design.
you know, someone could've just modded it for free... but oh wait, mods are ded.

They've wasted more time trying to understand how Frostbite works
That was EA being EA, not BioWare. This was back when EA was forcing every studio to use Frostbite for things, even stuff it wasn't even remotely designed for as a FPS engine. Like Need for Speed. "No no, we can't use Unreal Engine for this. We'd be forced to pay license fees to Epic. Just use that uh... thing those Swedes have since its free."

Like I said. It all circles back to middle managers overruling the technical team. These same retards will get six figure bonuses for their compensation while another dev studio shutters.

Isnt that the standard for hd remasters?
Yeah, but trying to be fair to BioWare, it doesn't sound like they were involved in this particular mess and people in thread are acting like they are.

BioWare deserves scorn and hatred, all of their studios do, but I'd rather it be over shit they actually did.

unreal is a fps engine too.
you're talking about devs who claimed they've spend months implementing a third person camera. which was in bf3.
and least of all, if those cucks at dice sweden manage to properly use that engine, there's no excuse some fucking leafshits in edmonton can't do too. it also seem to work fine in fifa, the only one having a problem with frostbite seem to be bioware. must be the engine I guess....

maybe they should've told ea about their issues to get some support in that regard, instead of hoping "bioware magic" will fix it in the last minute.

Mac Walters from BioWare was the director on the Legendary Edition, even if the graphical optimisation was handled by an external studio.

Why in the world is Mac (I completely screwed over ME3's ending and Andromeda's development) Walters still getting such big roles at the company?

Blitzed through ME1 and am at the Reaper IFF on ME2 over the weekend.

ME1 really doesnt hold up, the graphics, sound mixing, animations are all over the place. Story is much more boring then I remember, but the individual writing for the characters still feels ok even if the aliens arent nearly as interesting compared to 2.

ME2 is still really fun to play, wife is really enjoying watching the story as she has never seen the game before. The graphics look a tad dated but HDR and 60 FPS helps a lot. I forgot how many more paragon/renegade options were in 2 compared to 1. All the individual loyalty missions help each character feel realized in the universe, and I am glad they all get time to shine.

Going to skip all the DLC missions besides Shadow Broker though, I remember the other two being kind of boring. I was really worried 2 wouldn't hold up, because I beat it several times when it released and I still hold it as one of my favorite games.

I replayed ME1 about eight months ago. It is fun, but its age is definitely apparent now. Landscapes are sparse amd there is a lot of blandness. KOTOR is similar in that respect. I replayed it just before ME1.

You have to think, when Mass Effect came out it was a lot closer to KOTOR's design paradigm than Mass Effect 2 was to Mass Effect 1. ME1 is probably one of the last of that older generation of RPGs that found their footing in the 90s. Mass Effect 2 is a lot more modern by comparison, for good and ill.

I had even gone and replayed Dragon Age: Origins and that game seems thoroughly stuck in the middle between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 in terms of design and aesthetic.

ME1 is rough, but going full nostalgiafag for ME2 is retarded. It's a shallow Gears ripoff with JJ Abrams mysterybox and retard writing, all melodrama to cover shit reasoning. The 'story', isn't one story but 10 self contained(read: irrelevant) side plots recruiting randos, a couple of which are gracelessly retrofitted to tie into the main plot. The main plot itself is a 4 hour wet fart that is as bad as anything in ME3 and later Bioware games.

Everything in the game is built around you not paying an iota of attention to how retarded it is. Gameplay is really boring, the only highlight is going immediately from 1 to 2 and it feeling much better at first, and said feeling is gone by the time you do your second recruitment mission fighting rando merc groups.

tldr if you like ME2 you should watch your fav director JJ Abrams on Netflix

ME2 is also held back by a devastatingly bad plot. So much of it makes no sense but for making Shepard a improbable super hero.

Shepard dying is still one of the most baffling plot decisions going in any media. He's back alive in 10 minutes and there's no discussion about the implications of him being heavily synthetic, just back on the grind. Shoulda just made him comatose, it'd literally have had the same effect on the story without a hamfisted jesus allegory
There was a video series that went into depth about just how stupid the plot to ME2 was. It is old though so who knows if it is still around.

Like @capitalBBustard said, ME1 is rough but the game has one thing that the sequels don't: soul.
ME2 is the beginning of the end of the franchise, the casualization, the streamlining of the story, the gameplay (FUCK THERMAL CLIPS), the RPG elements, the exploration of the galaxy (you barely go offworld, the new vehicle is only used twice in the entire game). There's no sense of wonder anymore, TIM says: "here's [plot element], go there, do that", rinse and repeat. As soon as you get control of the Shepard that you had since the previous game, they kill him/her.
Just because some aspects of ME1 were rough doesn't mean that they had to be removed. There was no reason for them to remove the inventory system, the customization of your weapons, armors and squadmates. The sad truth is, Takahashi is also responsible for this. In his ME1 review he complained about the difficulty of the game, he only found out later - in the comments section - that it was possible to change the loadout, the armors AND to add points to each ability after leveling up.

Looks more like gray skin to me, especially considering the model for the original photo is Afghani in real life. I do prefer the purple/blue skin of the original, though.

I'm not planning on buying the remaster at all, but I do want to know what they did with the multiplayer requirements in single player, because from what I remember it was only possible to get the best endings in 3 without playing the multiplayer by importing a save from the previous two games with certain choices.
This will definitely be on EA Play a couple months down the line. I'll just wait for that inevitable release.
