The idea of an Illuminati type group in the Resident Evil universe is not a bad one, it's just that The Family is a dumb name and Simmons was simply a dumb character.
I like your theories, maybe The Family is really an offshoot branch of the Secret Society from Street Fighter.

SSHH SHH SHHH SHUDDUP! Capcom might be listening and god knows they don't need any more crazy ideas.

On that note, this must be the most unintentionally hilarious scene in RE history

I cannot watch this without thinking of the Naked Gun gag where they keep leaning out to shoot at eachother, then the wide shot shows they're about 2 feet apart.

It's amazing to think a game with tank controls ultimately lead to a film with a scene like this.

Oh yeah, there's shades of the Illuminati from Street Fighter III.

Even in Resident Evil there's already been an Illuminati flavor to the wholes concepts of old money bloodlines like Spencer or even the lords of the village in 8 and even .the Duke is implied to be part of some secret society.

The biggest problem with this style of action scene, aside from the fact it looks more like a dance than a fight, is the complete lack of stakes. If you have characters that are still just ordinary people, but pull off superhuman feats and take punishment that would kill someone with barely a scratch, then why would I be invested?

It's dumb because part of the original point of survival horror was playing as character that we're more like real people, so even if they did have police or military training they weren't superhuman action heroes.

In the case of Silent Hill you were playing as everyday people with no police or military training.

That was the appeal of the original RE trilogy. Just regular people, albeit professionals, trying to get through a horrifying situation and doing so by the skin of their teeth.

Then RE 4 came along and the whole franchise took a giant shit.

Part of what drew me to the survival horror genre was they were more realistic than other games, the characters felt more real and the environments were crafted like they were real places with little to cut and paste, I enjoyed your Halos and GTAs as much as any gamer but I always appreciated how interestingly different they were than other games.

But then the genre was stamped out and though some games in recent years have tried to bring some of that vibe back and I do appreciate that, it's never been exactly like it was and I just don't understand why that happened, why wouldn't people want some variety in games and enjoy something that stands out from all the others, but of course most gamers feel the opposite.

To be fair, CV started with Claire outrunning a helicopter and then they added more Wesker bullshit in the re-release. That is why I vastly prefer Darkside Chronicles as it does a better job capturing the gothic atmosphere and Alfred's disturbed mind with no Matrix stunts.

Contrary opinion here: I hated the Hook-man demo shit and I'm glad that it got canned. Looked too much like RE was trying to be Silent Hill.

I've harped on it before, but they really should of split the series up. One could of been more action-oriented, the other could of been more slow, with exploration and survival being front and center. Instead they kept trying to bottle lightning twice (and in a way actually succeeded) by trying to remake the RE4 formula.

Bonus contrary opinion: I don't really like the SH series.

Jesus Christ, man, what kind of rabbit hole you just exposed us all towards?!

Kid me: Man, what a devious plan that could only work in the realms of fiction! Oh well *goes back to the fun pew pew*
Current Me: I feel like RE4 was trying to tell me something for years...

wait a fucking- wait wait- a fucking second. I never caught that but are they seriously using that He-Man meme song?! Oh my fucking God...this seems like a joke!

Also I love how they just take completely unrelated characters and just decide to call them the video game character...Im not even talking about race here (tho it certainly doesnt help), its the attitude. That isnt Jill Valentine.

Again, I cant believe that the Paul Anderson movies did Jill Valentine more justice. WHY THIS THING MAKES ME COMPLIMENT PAUL ANDERSON?! STOP!

I wish capcom made some more tank control games with the REmake engine. Churn out a few games with 20 year old specs that still hold up today. Less dev time, less memory space. Less costs. The backdrops are pre-rendered so re-used assets are less noticeable.

I liked the feel of the old RE games were you're just exploring places and managing your inventory. All the overblown action stuff kinda knocks the wind out it's sails.
