I mean, it's a little more realistic, but then we get meat Transformers and Chris Roidfield, Puncher of Pumice. Make up your fuckin' minds, Capcom.
Capcom didn't take notes on what happened in the lore, and Umbrella's downfall is refreshingly realistic.

I kind of like the fucky balance of realistic outcomes and over-the-top boulder punching crazy, it's fun.

Capcom Logic™ is one of those things that's dependent on the eye of the beholder, I think, especially in the Resident Evil series. Either the mix of realism and Saturday-morning-tier "logic" is a fun way to kill time or self-defeating and utterly retarded. I've never been big on the series and have experienced most of it through other people playing it, so aside from my own personal meltdown over 6 in general (and Simmons in particular), I don't really have a dog in that race.
The recent entries (REmakes 2 and 3, 7, and 8) seem like they've been pulling more in the "realism" direction for the most part if I'm correct, so I'm wondering how long it'll take before the pendulum swings back toward absurdity.

Japanese players are quite casual and don't like horror stuff. That's why games in Japan have censored scenes and easier difficulties. The director of Village surveyed gamers who said 7 was too scary to even play, so they had to dial back the horror. 8 is also noticably easier.

Result: RE has to balance out the camp, horror, and comedy to do well. It can't be constantly scary, since action scenes are expected. An action-focused game becomes too easy (unlimited ammo and item boxes).

Given 8 gave us the single most pants shittingly terrifying moment in recent franchise history, I still raise my eyebrows at Village being deemed less frightening.

Wasn't Trent's motivation that Umbrella killed his family? It's been YEARS since I read the S.D. Perry books.

Something along those lines; I think they were some manner of high-level research personnel that the company whacked for some reason, but I don't remember the specifics out of hand. I do remember that "Trent" was an assumed name based on his father's middle name (James Trenton Darius) and apparently no-one on Umbrella's board of directors noticed.

Umbrella's downfall was already shown in the ending of Outbreak 2, with Yoko's ending testifying in court against Umbrella.

also, Yoko originally was supposed to be Ada's role in 2

Does S.D. Perry ever get into the subject matter of the anus of Trent?

I wonder what S.D. Perry novelizations of 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 would have been like?

I never read Zero Hour but I think Caliban Cove was the only S.D. Perry book I actually disliked. Keep in mind I was in my teens the last time I read these books though.

They probably would have made better movies than the Anderson series.

I do at least like that that asshole's boulder-punching has become an in-universe meme now, if Heisenberg is anything to go by.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; they should of just split the timeline. Have one series be about survival horror and atmosphere, and the other be over-the-top action horror.

Hey man, I've agreed with you. Something about Jake equipped with a jetpack blasting away at B.O.W. hordes, like it was Vanquish but with zombies.

Platinum should just make an RE game. At the very least it might give them some direction and help them pull their heads out of their asses. Because it's not like Capcom really knows what to do.

Specifically, now that RE7 and 8 are "wrapped up", I don't think Capcom really has an idea on what to do next.

We did get teased with The daughter's story has begun... or something to that effect at the end of RE8, and the fact its still modern day and Chris is still around implies she grew up fast.
Of course, that doesn't actually mean anything, but I'm always up for more Platinum stuff regardless. Go have Jake punch some evil clone of his old man to death or something. "T-Virus, son. My cells harden in response to physical trauma. You can't hurt me, Jake!"

Get some souped up version of the C-Virus from 6 to get released in a random city, get Jake in, go from there. The shenanigans will be GLORIOUS.

Doesn't Jake have some weird viral quasi-immunity from his old man, or am I misremembering the plot of 6? If so, could explain why he's in there all by himself. Could also bring in Sherry as waifu bait since she too would be immune. "Yeah, its a total clusterfuck, but you two are the only ones who won't drop dead on the spot either from the virus or the hellspawn its created, so yeah, we're sending you in, but we'll stay in radio contact and airdrop supplies as needed."

Swap characters over episodes, Sherry a high-agility character based around small arms and agile moves, able to regenerate health thanks to her own infection, Jake a more conventional soldier who needs to use medkits, but has really big guns. Could even have some really creepy bits for the gurofags where Sherry needs to amputate herself for one reason or another.
