In fact, wasn’t Romero on board to be involved with the creation of the first Resident Evil?
No, that's not true.

He was hired to direct these trailers for Resi2 however!

Additional making of documentary

He was approached with directing the first RE movie and iirc, there was even a finished script (or at least a version of it). It was closer to the source material but it still had some weird twists I think, its been a long while.

Yeah I agree. Even though, to me, Resident Evil was never supposed to be “spoooky oooo~”
It was always supposed to be a mid budget B horror movie in video game form, reminiscent of George Romero’s early work. In fact, wasn’t Romero on board to be involved with the creation of the first Resident Evil?
Trust me I know. I think 1 had horror ambitions but that went quickly out the window with 2 being a Kamiya directed game and 3 starting with jill exploding through a brick wall. Even then things like story and atmosphere are just secondary to me when it comes to games.

Where 7 tries to be faithful to the original is that it's about resource management again but the balance in the second half is so off. There's only 4 enemy types aside from minor things like wasps and 3 of those 4 types die in a single shotgun blast and the 4th (fatties) are very rare. So once you have more shells than enemies (not including ones you can avoid) all the rest of your resources, including your extra shotgun shells just go to bosses and there's just not enough to come anywhere close to the reserves the game grants you. It's not the only RE title with poor resource balancing but it is probably the shortest which should make balance much easier to plan. By the end of 7 even mediocre players should have large stockpiles of ammo and mountains of healing supplies.

Of course 7 is also short because of how long it took them to make the new engine and mechanics as well as VR compatibility. They tried to make up for this with a mountain of free bonus content but that doesn't fix the game's resource problem since it's not integrated to the main story.

I guess so.

But when I think "Action RE" i generally think of "you're this Schwarzeneggerian Iron Man who blasts through everything and nothing phases you" which is what 6, 5 and 4 to an extent were.

Earlier entries still had that "desperately try your best to survive zombie apocalypse" tone and atmosphere.
I just means it escalated to being more of a shooter but it still was a survival horror game. But it was more generous than any game of that era with ammo.

From 4 onward, including the remakes were all straight action shooters. With 7 being the exception since it toned it down for being a bit more of a horror game with minimal weapons and resources.

I don't mind RE7 since I replayed it after many many years. It's fine the first half, but it just it becomes dogshit as soon as you're doing saw traps with Lucas, the shitty boat and the mines being the worst final area of the series.

Always found that second half weird. There weren't any sudden changes or shifts in priorities during development, were there?

Not that I'm aware. That back half is such a fucking slog that makes CVX look fast paced.

I decided to start playing Zero again. It's actually worse than I remember. The stupid engine brake system on the train lol. How dull the training facility is. How unemphasized the zombies are when we're just coming off the heels of REmake with crimson heads. I know the reason for the crimson heads was a different strand of T-Virus but they're so weirdly not threatening in it.

The eliminators are so broken it's hilarious how they just tank shotgun blasts. Leechman is so busted and the molotov throwing is so trash. Why rooms have an item cap for dropping them to the floor is so retarded.

I did some testing during my previous playthrough. Eliminators can survive up to 3 shotgun shells at close range. This is the same number of shells it takes to kill a Hunter. Sometimes they'll die after 2 blasts, but that's if they spawn with a lower health pool and are fired upon at close range (medium range means it'll take 3 shells, which is the minimum it takes to kill a Hunter with the lowest health pool value).

At medium range, there's no difference in ammunition expenditure. Both enemy types will always take between 3-4 shells.

I didn't test the shotguns at long range because that'd be retarded.

I finally managed to find the video that brilliantly put together why RE2 "remake" wasn't good! I am absolutely archiving it here

Unfortunately the original uploader is a giant coward. Pathetic.
Well, she had me until she started ranting about 'muh sexism'.

"Mikami's problem with Rebecca..." Bitch please, Mikami doesn't like Rebecca because she's not a strong female character. If anything, that disproves your entire point about Capcom having problems with women in Resident Evil.

Makes me wonder if the reason she took it down was due to getting flak for her "wimmins puhroblemz" spiel

Most of 7's development budget/time went to developing a new engine for new hardware while also making it compatible with VR something the devs certainly never touched. Even the bonus content got delayed several times and it was all free there's like 10 bonus modes/scenarios. Like the game doesn't have a final boss and instead just has 2 fatties, an enemy you've already fought a couple times at that point.

I had a long post talking about how this person reminds me of other video makers on YouTube. Something glitched when I tried to post it and it got dumped which annoyed me to no end. Anyway, to continue on.

There’s this weird subsection of small creators whose entire gimmick are “Hey, you know that thing most people like? Well it actually sucks and here’s my completely subjective opinions on the matter the FACTS of why it’s actually trash!”
There’s one for most things and they always make these long drawn out videos where they end up repeating themselves a million times and end up resorting to Ad Homs after a while.
How this dumb cunt could say there’s a sexism problem in FUCKING RESIDENT EVIL is beyond me. Claire, Jill, Rebecca, Ada, etc are some of the most iconic and beloved Strong Female Protagonists©️ in gaming history, right up there with Lara Croft and Samus.
People love them because they seem grounded and realistic and aren’t mid to late 2010’s/Early to mid 2020’s Girl Boss©️ type characters that are badass for no reason and make the men look like dorks.

including the remakes were all straight action shooters
I mean that can be said for 4make and even 3make, the latter of which I’ve grown to dislike more and more over the years since playing it, but 2make was definitely not just a “straight action shooter.”

not in the entire series anyway, but the 2/3 remakes have odd character moments where characters become the barebones versions of what people remember of them on the ps1.

the entire ending of 2make has this odd bit where they are on the road and leon tells the girls to hide from an upcomming truck, and it has a trucker flipping leon off and maybe driving to racoon city... and then cherry just hops with them hand in hand talking how they should adopt her.
i'm not asking for a grimdark ending for the game, but it feels totaly disconnected from the game.

Should have taken the ending of the novel. In the novel Leon, Claire and Sherry get picked up by Rebecca and two of her companions and Leon states that the city had an Umbrella accident

I didn't fight them very long but yes it's in general 3 shots with the shotty. And you can't knock them back unless they're in mid jump. Again I didn't play with them too long to test it.

It's so retarded when Hunters look like they weigh 250lbs a piece where as Eliminators might be 50 lol.

The fact they were even considering cutting that is absolutely insane. Thank God he made them keep it.
Nick's a pretty swell dude from what I have seen.

But that's got me thinking about someone else now: I've heard a few negative things regarding "remake" Jill's actress, what's the situation regarding her? I don't really follow news about this stuff since getting disappointed with 2"make".

Yeah, "watched" this the other day (see: listening to it while cooking/cleaning) and I was not impressed. I appreciate her perspective on the series and REmake2 in general but the bulk of the criticism stems from some bullshit women's studies 101-tier analysis of believing that agency/"positive" traits are taken away from the fictional characters she likes with a special emphasis on the female ones? That sort of subjective analysis is tedious even at the best of times but playing it up as if the remake is GARBAGE, total piece of GIGANTIC STEAMING BROKEN SHIT for youtube clicks bugged me.

When I saw the video length and the fact that Crowbcat or whatever his name is commented on it, I thought I was going to get some Mauler-esque take down on the pacing, AI, item placement, combat, puzzles, gutted B-scenario, environments, enemies etc. you know, all the shit that most people actually care about. Instead I got a video essay on how the writers didn't copy the bare bones action-movie b-movie character beats one-for-one to satisfy the arbitrary whims of some broad.

I get if she wasn't happy with what they did, or even was mad at the perception of inferior characterisation but unfortunately most of the arguments in the video can be summed up as "Leon/Claire did this in the original but don't in the remake and I liked it more in the original". Again, totally fine criticism to make, especially if you back it up decently as she did. BUT... at the end of the day it boils down to subjective complaint about inferior writing that can be dismissed with the simple response of, "It's a different game, why do you expect the exact same?"

About the only thing she really brought up that I haven't seen too many others mention is how Capcom fucked up Annette's character. That's it.

She did go hard on the feminist shit with Claire. But she's spot on describing how they assassinated Annette's character.

Subjective opinions framed as objective facts. Simple as that.
and the fact that Crowbcat or whatever his name is commented on it,
Isn’t he the dude who got exposed for crap with 4make?
Mauler-esque
Eh, he’s a Nu-God of War shill so I take his views with a massive grain of salt.

Yeah exactly. It’s like Creetard’s videos about the Fallout games he doesn’t like. You watch it and it’s just his subjective opinions repeated ad nauseam for literally 8 hours in some cases.
Which if they made it CLEAR that it was their opinions, I wouldn’t care. But that’s my biggest gripe with people like that. They frame their subjective opinions as objective facts.

Eh, he’s a Nu-God of War shill so I take his views with a massive grain of salt.
I wasn't trying to make a qualitative statement about him, more a comparison re: expectation about length and detail that goes into the videos that (especially in the case of the Dark Souls 2 videos) focussed on more substantive things than just-story beats. I can disagree with him on things (just like I agree with a lot of this broads' overall points about the characters/writing in REmake) but expected more than fluffy 'well, that's like, your opinion man' stuff when it comes to writing off a game as hyperbolically as she does.

They frame their subjective opinions as objective facts.
Yeah, just felt like she had a big axe to grind over something that I consider completely minor compared to the more substantive problems the game has and those were glossed over in favour of the former. It also doesn't help that I kept catching whiffs of boring college feminist criticism. But that's her prerogative just as it's mine to find her complaints less convincing than she intends but we're starting to venture into a bigger discussion than I feel like when talking about Resident fucking Evil.
