My final time was just over 10 hours. I think 4R was close to 20 and that's not counting separate ways.

Yeah, this game is pretty atrocious. Grace is a terribly-written character with next to no charisma. Characters make baffling decisions; Leon going to melee attack despite having a gun, the bad guys are after Grace but are perfectly fine with locking her in the mansion where it's very likely she would be killed by monsters.
The game's pacing is just dog shit. The Grace segments are just way too long and her jogging speed is way too slow. The puzzles are also absolutely braindead. Safes with the code just in a document you find, no searching, no looking for clues. Documents will have puzzle solutions highlighted in yellow because the game treats you like an idiot all the time. Fetch quest "puzzles" aren't fun or clever when you keep doing them, they just serve to waste your time.
The hide and seek segments, what a huge waste of time, it's not scary, it's not tense, it's not fun, you're just hiding and waiting for the enemies to move. Waiting isn't fun, it's boring and only serves to discourage you from multiple playthroughs - just make it a fucking cutscene.
The game is littered with materials, but they should honestly just put the final, resulting item there instead, but they insist on tacking on a half-baked crafting system just to waste your time.
Leon's melee feels kinda clunky and inconsistent? Like his heavy attacks and combos are these fancy flourishes where he freezes and poses during his animations and it leaves his back completely open.
There was one section of the game where I shot the glass from underneath a zombie, sending it to its death and I thought "Oh hey, that's cool." but that moment of satisfaction was short-lived because the game then literally popped up a text window tutorial going "HEY, YOU CAN SHOOT THE GLASS FROM UNDER THE ZOMBIES." because the game has no respect for the players' intelligence and constantly treats them like a retard.
"You can't see, can you?" Fucking hell, Grace. What gave it away? I swear, this writing is horse shit.
Discount Wesker did make me laugh. You don't even fight the guy, he's just there as a "Remember Wesker??" memberberry thing.
I really don't like games with "pick your ending" buttons, RE7 pulled the same thing and it was really bad there too.
This game also had the audacity to make Oswell E. Spencer, the ambitious, murderously ruthless, elitist man who, among his last words were "I was to become a god!", the man responsible for creating BOWs in the first place to just be 'Nah I regret my actions actually and have a secret super-cure that'll fix everything'

So this is just cursory views on my first playthrough. Usually my view changes with subsequent plays as I start seeing more of the flaws seep through, but I thought this game was fine, if not great in many ways. It wasn't RE4 or REmake (doubt any RE game will be as good again), but it does capture some of what made those games great. Awesome sounds design, looks great, first time in a while I felt tense with an RE game while playing as Grace. The zombies genuinely feel threatening at first and I like that many of them have a bit of a personality. Overall, presentation was great. No real issues with it. Even though Grace wasn't a strong character, her actor did a good job with what she had.
I know RE has been pretty action oriented for a really long time now, but I just don't see it being the cornerstone of this franchise, and 9 doesn't really improve on it in any substantial way. Still feels somewhat awkward to play, like some bad memories of RE6. Also felt a bit too "I REMEMBER THIS" with some of the locations and enemies. Didn't mind them, mind you, just a bit lazy. Raccoon City wasn't great either, though walking through the police department was a nice touch. I do, sadly, agree with many people here though; less Leon probably would have been better to keep the game's excellent first part going.
At this point, I think they should finally put an end to using the T-virus as it's main plot point; they are starting to extend into looney tunes territory with how much they are twisting the story to keep it around as a threat. Spencer making Elpis felt out of nowhere too. Granted, RE is not really known for it's good story telling, but felt off about that.
Overall, fun game and excellent at times, but just like most recent RE releases, not really something I see myself coming back to once I 100% it. In all honesty, retire the characters and plot points now and start anew; it would give the series a much needed reset from the convoluted mess that story is now and you can introduce characters that can play more like the Grace section at the start of the game. Go hardcore into making it an actual survival horror experience, I think it would do the series better in the long run. I have a bad feeling that newer RE games are gonna feel more like RE6 rather than REmake or RE4 in the future.

No, this game prints money because its a B.O.W. dressed soap-opera and always has been since the very first game, it lives, and thrives on its cast, Ethan Winters is a rare "people love this new faceless man so fucking much" exception.
The only flaw is that they have kept the franchise in "Current Year" which is an INCREDIBLY DUMB FUCKING MOVE in the modern age, because when Resident Evil came out they had a game every 6 months to a year, and now Dev time no longer works like that so we get 6 year+ spacings.

Shame because RE5 actually IS rough around the edges and could benefit from some tweaks. A modern remake would probably cast Debra Wilson as Sheva, and there aint no way that tribal outfit is coming back.
Sadly the game was mired in muh racism controversy way back when that wasnt even a big deal. Release it today and Capcom's office would be firebombed.

It's pretty crazy how hard RE2make got me into the series, only for 3make's rushed greed to make me completely disinterested again. I haven't touched any of the new games. I'm an emulation shill, so I've played a good bit of RE4 on GC and really enjoyed the gameplay loop. Tank controls aren't my favorite thing but you get used to them, and it will be good practice before finally playing REmake one day. Though I've only played it to get a feel for the controls, I genuinely respect it as a game of high renown. Its reputation precedes it, and the graphics are so damn superb for 2002.
