Still confused as to why they're remaking RE4 and not giving Code Veronica a proper remake. RE4 is more popular overall but Code Veronica is one of the more important titles in the series in terms of the overall "lore" of the game.
So I've been thinking about the REmakes, and after the 'stumble' with REmake 3, I think REmake 4 is either going to cause them to consider remaking the other RE games (CV, Outbreak, 5 & maybe even 6) if it's a success, but if they fuck it up, I think it'll not only kill any future plans for other REmakes, but the series as a whole. RE4 is considered by many to be one of the best, if not the best in the franchise with many people wondering how they could improve on it.

You think he ever made it off the exploding island? Judgeing by how he always seems to be ahead of you, I would assume he was following leon the whole game, so he wsa bound to know the whole island was set to explode. Right?
Considering he's suppose to be a DMC character, I assume he just surfed a rocket off the island.

Yeah, but it heavily implies it, does it not? If you saw a character mention being an NYPD cop in a movie about killer hillbillies who speak stereotypical southern slang would you then assume it takes place in.... Canada?
Oh whoops sorry I left that thought unfinished. I do personally think the game takes place in a really remote region of Spain. But Luis says he used to be a cop in Madrid the same way Leon used to be cop in the US. We have no idea how long ago he was actually a cop. It must have been some time ago since he mentions seeing the T virus sample at the station which would have been of interest around the time of the Raccoon City outbreak. Then he switches careers from being a cop to being a biological researcher. Its such a massive career change I have to believe there was a large passage of time during this change and it is entirely reasonable he could have moved.

I think it is a reasonable assumption to believe they picked Madrid as the city because it takes in Spain but I also believe that if you want to pick "RE 4 doesn't take place in Spain" as your hill to die on you can wave it away because a former career doesn't define your current location. Like I said I believe the game does take place in Spain unless it really was supposed to be self governed micro nation run by the Salazar family.

I'd imagine it was probably better in Japanese than English... I doubt their language guys got a decent budget since they had to hire Mexicans to do the VA work Spaniards wouldn't do.

No, I want it to be as awkward in japanese as it is in english. It's funnier that way.

I believe REm4ke has validated me somewhat from our previous conversation.
You have it completely backwards. CV was a wet fart that critics said was fine, but got shat on for the stupid plot, derivative gameplay, cutscenes and Steve Burnside looking like Leo Dicaprio before the face changed in the X port and RE4 was a genre defining instant classic that everyone loved. They'll remake the first game for the second time and RE4 before they'll touch CV. The only thing RE4 is heralded as is rejuvinating the series and it becoming more popular than ever. (Unless you were on forums with like 30 die hards fawning over hookman RE4.)
But the big difference is that CV was actually a mediocre seller and legitimately considered a low point by Capcom. That's why I'm telling you, as stupid as it sounds, 4 is more likely to get remade. I'm not saying that as a real potential possibility, I'm saying that CV's relative stature is that low, and thus the likelyhood of it getting remade is that much less than even a needless remake of 4. They'll just remake the first game again, and that will be it for remakes.

The only thing confusing is them jumping straight to 4 instead of redoing 1 into a TPS, 4 is a deceptively big game. It would be a lot faster and cheaper, and they already mentioned remaking the first game again in passing. inb4 they remake 0 before CV
It's a shame how overlooked Code Veronica is, I myself didn't play it until 2015 and a lot of RE's lore kind of clicked afterward, it also made it clear what the origins of Capcom's "Gothic castle" phase was.
It's overlooked 'cus it's mediocre, dude. The only lore that clicks is when Wesker started larping Neo.

I disagree, I think it's great, the Ashford residence is one my favorite locales in the series.

In fact I think it's good enough that I don't really think it needs a remake, since it was always 3D, there's less of a leap over 1, 2 and 3.

I'm personally more interested in what a 4 remake would be like, CV seems fine enough as is to me.

My favourite thing about Resident Evil series is that it's trashy in a good way and you are not supposed to take it seriously because it ain't trying to be "deep" and realistic. Or at least it was like that.

Resident Evil 4 remake news from Duskgolem (the guy who leaked RE8 Village)

Good news: The story isn't changing but expanding. As example he mentioned Dr. Salvadore (the crazy chainsaw guy). We are getting more lore about him. Perhaps we will also finally know what's in the wiggling bag inside of a container.

Bad (??) news: He said the game is going to be controversial. Does he mean the fact that it's going to be remade in the first place is controversial ? Or perhap Capcom is going to channel their inner Neil Druckmann & let tranny Krauser in a dress kill Leon with a baseball bat & Ashley is on a journey to kill him. Also he has buttsex with Saddler.

Other stuff: The game isn't going to play like the original or the new remakes. RE4 changed the landscape of video gaming and the developers want to honor this accomplishment.

Since Shinji Mikami is kinda (but sadly not fully) involved in it I wonder if he tries to do something groundbreaking again or at least helps Capcom with it.

Which is doubly ironic because I genuinely consider Resident Evil to be one of the all time most realistic and plausible "zombie outbreak" stories in the genre atleast in terms of the "big picture" without taking the non-zombie beasties into account, considering how the infection winds up burning itself out in isolated cities/towns and then being aggressively contained and firebombed away by world governments, and everyone on the planet starts training their police and military forces up on how to handle new outbreaks, as opposed to the tired "zombies drive humanity to near extinction because zombies can seemingly teleport to uninfected areas/the military is too retarded to put up a fucking roadblock around infected areas" schtick

RE4 was kinda lengthy with lots of filler rooms of just fighting waves of dudes. And the fact that they want to make the game "something groundbreaking" it just tells me this is going to be a different game, whole sections of the Original Game will probably be cut. I can see something like the whole minecart ride being cut and we'd see more story related segments instead. They might cut the shooting game you do with Merchant too and other stuff.

Part of the magic of RE4 is that you can tell the developers squeezed every last drop out of the gameplay as they could, which led to sequences like the minecart and the minigame. It's an everything but the kitchen sink approach to game design that you don't often see anymore because nowadays developers save those ideas for a potential sequel. It's probably why 5 felt so much less interesting than 4 in hindsight, but it makes 4 feel like a huge, crazy adventure. And that approach can be seen in the game's fluctuating tone, going from tense and disturbing in the early hours to goofy and over-the-top once you get to the castle. I can see them cutting things out for being tonally off, like Salazar's castle, and maybe making the entire game focus on backwoods horror in an infected village.

I can easily see a modern remake try and streamline everything to make it a more consistent experience, and with how the recent remakes have been I can also see them trying to swing for a more horror-centric game than the original was. I suppose we'll just have to see, but either way the original game was lightning in a bottle and I'm skeptical a remake can even live up to it.

I think you need the castle to be honest. It makes for a good base of power for the cult. I think you would need to tone it down in a few ways like remove the roller coaster that's inside it and make it more sinister and decayed to match the village's atmosphere. I would scrap the military base though and add in the necessary technology and labs to the dungeons of the castle instead. Thinking about it having a remake for 4 in the works at the same time as Village seems a bit redundant doesn't it?

I hope they had ideas about what innovations they wanted before they came up with idea of RE 4 remake. I want the innovations to be an organic evolution of the series and not something they felt the need to force in RE 4 just because of the original being different from its predecessors.

I mostly used the castle because the owner, Salazar, is a really goofy character. He's a Spanish Napoleon with a silly voice that keeps taunting you like a Bond villain. And frankly that's why Salazar is so memorable. You can't really separate Salazar from the castle either because it belongs to his family and there's an extensive backstory regarding his role in Los Illuminados, so if you include one you basically have to include the other in some capacity.

It wouldn't be impossible to make him creepy, and I can certainly think of ways to make him scary (like playing up his sadistic tendencies, maybe make his appearance more grotesque), but part of me thinks that the original charm would be diminished.

I have a bad feeling this will be the general opinion behind any of the changes in the remake. They are in a weird place to try and remake RE 4. Before I would have said to play it straight to match the tone of recent RE games and help it stand alone from the original since we all know RE 4 will continue to exist and come to each console generation. The problem is Village seems to be taking that place now. If they keep the camp I hope they don't push it too far especially since they will be able to reference things from the original. I can already see the large cheese wheel on the table in the chief's house. I probably shouldn't talk though I was amused by them referencing some of Barry's lines in Revelations 2.

One thing I'd like is since Ada has separate ways they could replace Assignment Ada with Assignment Hunk or at least have the all the playable character be usable. Mercenaries better be in the game or I'll be sad.

As great as RE4 was, I'd still rather see CV done justice first, probably my favourite after RE2. Still in shock as to how bad the RE3make was. I mean, it's decent in its own right, per se, but piss-poor compared to the source material.
Pretty bummed that 8's gonna be another FPV game, I didn't rate 7 at all, as a Resi game, anyway. Felt more like a competently done love letter to Outlast than part of the larger RE lore, random Redfield appearance notwithstanding.

So after beating RE4 I couldn't shake that RE bug and decided to play through RE0 too. Don't think this is a controversial opinion (judging by skim-reading some review scores from back in the day) but it is in my opinion the worst of the 'classic' tank control games.

Started off promising enough, graphically it looks really good and I liked the 2 character gimmick but it all quickly fell apart.

Game feels derivative, the training academy section especially is a poor copy paste of the Spencer mansion. Some weird design choices too - there were multiple times where they put text boxes near item pickups and I'd spend a minute trying to position myself just right to pick up ammo or something.

The leech enemies are stupid. Not because they are tough, I like a challenge, they look fucking stupid wobbling around and instead of being intimidating I just chuckled to myself every time I saw one. Like one of those 90s rubber/goo figures you'd fling at a wall to make it stick with their stupid floppy arms.

Probably one of my biggest gripes is the item management though. They got rid of the item boxes, apparently at the suggestion of fans? Its 10 times worse in RE0! You just end up backtracking a dozen times to ferry items to a new section of the map like an asshole. Enjoy getting eaten alive by a mutant frog after backtracking to pick up some ammo after a boss fight.

It is by no means a bad game but considering the original REmake came out the same year RE0 looks shit in comparison.
