Even Ethan being a blank slate is forgivable because the idea is that he's a stand in for us, the player and with the first person perspective the idea is we're supposed to feel like we've stepped inside the world of Resident Evil (especially when taking 7's VR into account) ourselves instead of being an observer

This doesn't work when the entire story revolves around him and his family IMO

My own, biased take: There isn't much ground that Silent Hills and Amnesia didn't cover already. It also runs the risk of being an interactive movie, which appeals to a smaller fanbase. Ethan is a divisive lead, which doesn't help matters. A blank slate in a series known for these larger-than-life characters.

There definitely is a sweet spot, like you mention.

Umbrella should've ditched bioweapons and focused all their research on RAWKET LAWNCHAIR
I mean that source engine silent hill fan game: Alchemilla was pretty alright at letting the world tell the entire story of a silent hill spinoff of some random guy.
Its not as hard as you would think to come up with something innovative.

Though the excellent world building in 7 and 8 is ruined by the "UWU 2gether 5ever" cringe.

There comes a point when all of the characters, settings, and gameplay has been replaced, and you have to wonder if it's the same series anymore.

RE is not Silent Hill. Every SH (apart from 3) was told from the perspective of "some random guy."

I've heard plenty of people say that Castle D is just like Arklay, but I don't think anyone outside of the fan club thinks that. There comes a point when all of the characters, settings, and gameplay has been replaced, and you have to wonder if it is still the same series anymore.
Still haven't made a truly iconic monster since Nemesis. 4-8 are all too busy Humanizing what should be mindless killing machines/organic terminators. Why try to get players attached POSITIVELY to the boss you are immediately trying to get them to kill? Its some insane levels of Japanese Autism. :story:

As far as I am concerned, 7 was the most recent reboot of the franchise and its safe to say it isn't the same series. It lacks the passion and actual story telling the older media had despite the 4-6 era being pretty over the top wannabe western action movie with 6 going too far and making the series a literal joke. With several actual western action movies with that ex-umbrella chick that I'm certain no watched.

Unlike 4-6 and earlier, the current reboot series draws you in and pulls the rug out from under you with the "lolz you thought we were going to be a SURVIVAL HORROR GAME against ZOMBIES and other Umbrella bioweapons? LOL :story: ur funny."

"Here have a forced romance plot with constant unrealistic heavy breathing that would more believable coming from a deathfat, than from the average twitter user hipster skin and bones looking main character whenever they speak with insanely exaggerated voicelines that makes Engrish look like proper english. they can also tank being LITERALLY cleaved in half and just put their arm back on, spill some gin on it, and its all good. "

Even in the remakes of 2/3 and especially 8 which was dragged down by that every time it got interesting. Like when you get to drive the tank and they do the whole "we're gonna get her back ethan" cringe. Like No shit, someone's wife kidnapped by insane tranny bug people obsessed with "muh Daughter". Someone is going to be sent to investigate that shit.

Then the "totally not zero dark thirty "segment was pretty cringe too to the point where I just stopped playing.

He's his own character, but also enough of a blank slate when compared to other RE protagonists that he feels more like a stand in for us, the player, hence why we never see his face.

There's a serious disconnect between Ethan, the player's surrogate, and Ethan, the guy who really wants to find his wife.
"Mia, what the hell are you?" doesn't sound like somebody who spent three years looking for a person they really love would say to them. And you can argue that Ethan's in shock but, the thing is, he never brings up Mia again after the fight with her, from that point on Mia is irrelevant and Ethan is the player's surrogate until the game remembers Mia exists only for you to make a choice between her and Zoe, but the question is whether it's a choice for the player or for Ethan. Narrative-wise it seems to be the latter because the game punishes you for choosing Zoe (to be fair, she's a pointless damsel in distress you only get to know for 5 minutes), but the game did a pisspoor job explaining why. In Silent Hill 2 James ALWAYS bring up Mary, everything reminds him of her, we get to know what kind of person Mary was and why James misses her. How did Ethan met Mia? What did she like? Where did they spent their honeymoon? He never even wonders if he can still save her.
My point is, up until the "choose your waifu" segment, Ethan is a straightup gamer's avatar, nothing about him is clear, so technically he can be whatever person you want him to be. So what if I want him to be the person who saves Zoe, who is a technically a victim of Mia's wrongdoing, because this would be the right thing to do? Nope, Mia's the "good" choice, whether you like her or not because Ethan loves her, or does he really? In RE8 it's obvious their marriage is unhealthy and falling apart, only kept together by the child, because both are clearly traumatized by their experience...
TL;DR RE7 = bad narrative design.
RE8 is a little better because they dropped the blank slate angle, now Ethan is just his own character, but the question is, what was even the point keeping the first-person camera and hiding his face? 7 tried to capitalize on PT fame but it worked there because of tight locations, 8 looks like it was designed with OTS camera in mind. You don't get to see how tall the fridge lady really is, I mean.
I'm overthinking this.

Her wide frame is itself an environmental hazard. The Bakery blocks your path when trying to use stairs. She has to crouch to go through doors, having steadily grown too tall for her own castle.

But you're right. She could be ten feet tall. She could be five feet tall. It doesn't matter: you never get the sense of vertigo that Tyrant and el Gigante so cleverly induced.

In the end, she did her job as a meme. We just expected more than another stalker enemy. She seems like more of an annoyance than any real threat to Ethan, and the castle isn't set up for her to be able to sandbox like X or run you down like Nemesis.

She's piss easy to get away from, even on hardcore, it's creepy to see her in the distance or coming at ya, but she should have put up more of a threat, there really should have been more to her encounter and the castle in general, it's the Baker house all over again, cool but there's just not enough of it, it should have in fact been the primary setting of the game, they should have dropped the Moreau section, which was honestly kind of lame, in favor of more castle, though I get why they wanted to go with the gimmick of 4 lords.

But the game game should have been some time spent in the village, a lot of time in the castle, some time at Donna's mansion and then Heisenberg's factory, if you want the "4 lords" gimmick just say Miranda is one of the four lords but the one at the top.

There's plenty of criticisms to be made of 7 and 8, they're not as good as the classic games, but they're so, so much better than 5 and 6 and I'm thankful for that at least, I'm reminded of a quote from the movie The Wild Bunch: "It ain't like the old days, but it's not bad"

Mr. X managed to be scary because he was slow, didn’t speak, and was loud. Very loud. Hell, even if nemesis was ruined in re3 remake, he still managed to do a better job at being intimidating than miss vampire slut. People even made jokes about running towards dimitrescu instead of running away. This is supposed to be intimidating?

Yeah, the was the thing about REmake's Mr. X and OG Nemesis. As soon as you heard those heavy foot steps get too close or a door off screen open (sometimes) and SSTAAAARRRRRRSSs! Time to run. Later stalker enemies just never managed to capture that sense of dread.

So I ended up watching the animated CG movie Damnation. Very surprised how good and fun it was.

It explores something interesting that's not really touched on that much in the games, the use of BOW's in war. As we have Leon going full solid snake into "not Ukraine" and going rogue to undermine both factions using them. Basically see two types of warfare, precise usage of BOW's to take on enemy combatants and indiscriminate infection of entire districts to give an excuse to genocide the shit out of an area.

It's not shakesphere, but it looks VERY pretty and has some badass fights.

Had some good shit with Ada and leon, and I liked how it illustrated the political reality of a world with weaponized monsters.

Every YT comment is some variation on Joke's on you, I'm into that shit! or, My milkshake brings all the mods to the yard

Capcom aren't idiots. Their audience are a bunch of thirsty nerds in quarantine.

Resident Evil has really turned into a shitty franchise. Fucking Capcom needs to fire the writers and producers. 8 was so boring to watch and the monster designs, game design, story, and gameplay were bland as hell.

7 got away with this because they tried something new, made a smaller game and focused on setting as well as survival. This game...I don't get it. They just throw a dart on a board or something? The big bitch and her little bitches were jokes, so was fishboy, doll girl, and Tetsuo: The Ironman was....eh. He had some personality to him and that helped make him more memorable than everyone else but these aren't villains. They're all rejected sidekicks who went bad just to get attention.

I dont know how Capcom found a way to make BOWs boring and unscary, but they found a way.

This series has really gone to shit. It's like the Simpsons of video games. First few seasons are good but after that it hurts to watch.

Lady Di is cool idgaf. I like her. Hope to see her again.

I beat RE2 remake. Interesting hearing Karen Strassman try to deepen her voice....she made Annette sound like she was on something. I liked it a lot. Claire was my favorite to play as.

Now I'm watching the films next. Milla seems like a fun lady to hang with tbh. Her character is not in the games...interesting.
