Been playing RE4 and honestly... it's kind of boring me, at least by the latter half of the castle I feel it starts to get dull.

The issue is you fight too many and too few types of enemies, just blasting ganado after ganado over and over again, it does start to get very repetitious, playing this one after playing most of the classic ones, which I've never done before, really does drive home what a departure 4 is, in the old games every single monster put up a threat, here they're reduced to pure canon fodder and for me personally, for this series, that just isn't as interesting to me, REmake remains so much scarier and more interesting than 4 for me.

RE4 is also way more linear, lacking that satisfying almost Metroidvania style progression of the old games, if anything 4 makes me appreciate 7 and 8 more than I already did, in 8 especially you don't just spend the whole game blasting werewolf after werewolf, but the way it mixes it up with Lady D and her daughters, Donna Benevento and all that, it has the variety that 4 is lacking, the village also serves as a hub in 8 offering that more old school style of progression.

And story wise, it really is bullshit how they handled the whole deal with Spencer, the old games are very clearly setting him up as a major villain, so for 4 to have nothing to do with him and 5 to dispatch him in such an off hand way still really pisses me off years later, it's a real jump the shark the moment the series has had to work hard to make it's way back from, but I feel like this still needs to be addressed in a better way, if Wesker can come back after being killed, why not Spencer? Don't you think that guy would have some sort of trick up his sleeve?

Honestly I kind of feel like I made a mistake and should have just waited for the remake of 4, because if the 4 remake really is just the same game but with better graphics I'm not sure I care to play it again in just another couple of years or whenever it comes out, I hope it's greatly expanded like RE2 Remake was, hell I hope it's in fact a "what if" game finally telling the story of Spencer castle because I'm not really convinced the world needs another version of 4 to be honest.

The thing which sticks out to me isn't the body count. It isn't the action schlock. It isn't Ashley. It's that damn attaché case.

A remake will radically change what RE4 is about: carrying two pistols, two long guns and an RPG.

But excuse me while I execute these elegant roundhouse kicks, my glorious golden locks flowing in the wind ever so delicately.

To follow-up on RE4's guns:

It turns out that the Internet Movie Firearms Database has pages on video games, as well. Most of the weapons in RE4 are hybrids of two similar-looking guns, probably due to a design error. I assume a gunsmith could build these IRL.

The weapon that always confused me was the one on the original cover

It seems to be some sort of rifle and shotgun hybrid.

Since you mention it. I've been re-evaluating 4 in light of this thread.

I'm watching and re-watching LPs. And the thing which sticks out to me isn't the body count. It isn't the action schlock. It isn't Ashley. It's that damn attaché case.

This is why the remake will radically change what RE4 is about. Carrying two pistols, two long guns AND an RPG? I should look like Venom Snake on the desert flats!

It's pure video game logic. No "horror" game in history has diverged this far from reality. Then I watched an LP of RE5 (which I had not played), and suddenly understood why fans defend the movies as being "faithful" to the games. Some of this is shot-for-shot identical.

In the end, I am forced to admit that RE4 blows as a Resident Evil title.
4 really is not that great of game, it was ground breaking in 2005 but it does not stand the test of time, it's interesting how some games do and some games don't.

I'm not saying it's a terrible game or anything, it does have some cool and exciting moments and yeah, the precision aiming feels very well designed, but it's still got to be one of the most overrated games of all time.

I do think the movie was an influence, it's much like what happened with Silent Hill, once they came out with the movie all the games started feeling more inspired by the movie than the previous games in the series.

What's ironic is RE4 was directed by the creator of the series, Shinji Mikami, who also directed the best game in the series, REmake, so it's odd that he would miss the mark with RE4, but that results in me having mixed thoughts about him, it's much like Hideo Kojima, Japanese game creators can be weirdly inconsistent I guess.

In Mikami's defense though he did later direct The Evil Within, which felt like a bit of an apology by focusing more on the horror.

Finishing RE0 was a very bittersweet experience, knowing it was end of an era for the series, having played REmake, RE2, RE3, CV and RE0 back to back I can honestly say that I feel the classic formula had another game or two in it and was abandoned too soon.

actually, its a mix of before and after image....
on the left half, guy is gungho, angry eyes, holding a AR, on the left side is guy is scared, eye is like deer caught in the headlights scared, guy is now holding a shotgun

I know next to nothing about Japanese devs. But it does seem as if they're stuck between a rock and a hard place. They can aim for saturation in the US, thus ensuring the game is like everything else on the market. Or they can push the extreme side, Japan's love of the absurd. Those games fall deaf on most westerners.

Occasionally you strike gold with Dark Souls or Monster Hunter. But that's not often the case.
I think in Mikami's case his goal was to simply ensure RE4 was a big hit, so it's no surprise dumbing it down is what made it more popular.

So I’ve been replaying the resident evil series in timeline order and... I just can’t continue. I’m at the point where I’m playing RE6 and I just haven’t touched it much. I’m not sure if I’m just burnt out from playing so many RE games in a row, or if it’s just such a long game that I can’t replay, but I just can’t continue with replaying the games. Weird thing is the first time I played RE6 I was able to get through the game in just a few days and generally enjoyed myself, but now I can’t. Eh, maybe it doesn’t matter. Probably just way too burnt out with resident evil.

Did you get to revelations? I can take over for that one and do a little retrospective, as I finished that a few days ago.
