Unfortunately in the real world, a "Batman" would be considered not only a vigilante, but also be culpable for many crimes, such as aiding and abetting, assault, battery, homicide, etc etc.

Point here is that you're right, in the real world they either knew about real CP posted on the site and chose to play the vigilante, or they made it all up because they wanted to be the hero.
