Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

I don't think it really matters that they're on dead versions of Android. My idea is just designed around running emulators. Even Dolphin ran great on flagship phones from half a decade ago.

Plus, a conversion kit would let you use those nice high-res OLED screens, which you're just not gonna see from a Chinaware device. The only real problem is the ever-aging batteries in obsolete smartphones.
I like this idea, though what's stopping some Chinaware company from just buying up a metric shitload of old phones, slapping in new batteries, and forming a new chassis with a built-in controller around the phone? That'd cut out the middleman and make it not such a DIY project.

Keeping it in a DIY form could keep the cost down, and allow users to just provide their own phones that litter their drawers. It shouldn't cost much more than a standard game controller for such a kit. Though, with how few phones can be completely flashed with a new OS, it would be limited. Still, however, being able to recycle phones like that would be a hell of a lot better than leaving them to rot in landfills.

Don't a lot of used phones get shipped overseas? Like they land in the hands of Africans who use them to... I dunno, break open rocks or something. I dunno if a little kit like that would be worth anyone's time to actually recycle their own phones, when they'll already wind up polluting Africa, which frankly is a win-win for everyone (except the Africans).

Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. Africa is not of my concern, and it's not yours, either. The point I'm trying to make is, smartphones have been plenty powerful enough for well over a decade to run most consoles you'd want to emulate, and they tend to have very nice screens, to boot. How much is an OLED Steam Deck? Well over $500? Ah, but if you provide most of the components yourself, you'll have a luxurious little handheld for pennies on the dollar!

Dogg I'm sorry but I am not prying apart my old janky ass Galaxy S4 and sticking it in a Mad Catz controller chassis so I can play the bing bing wahoo. I get what you're saying, I like little DIY projects, but there's just so much that can go wrong. All it takes is for one doofus to stab a battery with a screwdriver, he blows himself to kingdom come, and the whole project's dead in the water. I figure if it were really viable, we'd see more homemade game console kits for things like Raspberry Pis. Those do exist, but they're more, like, designed around getting an understanding on how you'd assemble a prototype game system rather than one you'd actually want to use day-to-day. I'm sure there's a lot more that can go wrong that I can't think of at the moment, but I'm just not feeling this idea.

First of all, a Galaxy S4 wouldn't work. Take for instance, the compatibility list for GrapheneOS. It only supports Google Pixel phones, but not Samsungs. My vision entails a complete phone OS replacement, so the platform can be entirely controlled by external (replacement chassis) buttons. Your worries of a doofus stabbing shouldn't ever bare fruit, as such a project would be out of the grasp of your garden variety overenthusiastic idiot. The aim is to provide a quality pocket-sized gaming experience at a considerably low price, with a fun little project that makes its construction all the more satisfying.

Besides, the Africans were going to blow up those batteries anyway!

I dunno, man. There are plenty of smartphone manufacturers out there that crank out phones in all price ranges, yet not a single one is making an Android-based handheld game system. If there were money in it, I'm sure Samsung would be pumping out those A50-something models as game systems. But they're not. And speaking of replacing the chassis, have you ever actually dismantled a cellphone? Those sons-a-bitches are held together with very strong glue. Disassembling them inherently compromises their strength, destroys their waterproof seals, and there are so many tiny little screws, there's a reason so many people take their phones to repair shops and give some pajeet a hundred bucks for a new screen.

You really are Gene Shalit, aren't you?

That is true.

Got a working first generation Intellivision that's just been sitting around for years in my closet, realstically what do you guys think I could get for it?

Behold, the Logitech Powershell:

Place your iPhone 5 or 5S in its frame, and enjoy your new handheld game system using your phone! Except it was a piece of junk, because the directional pad didn't work well. Not to mention, very few iPhone games used limited control schemes, and didn't support emulators at the time, so it had very little utility on top of being poorly designed. But the spirit still stands! A new chassis wasn't even required, as iPhones of its day were so small, such a device was still pocket sized.

See? It's possible. It's just not being done.

I would, but I got an RG35XX-H (same specs, different form factor) right before this was announced. I'm holding out for someone to finally make a dual-screen handheld that's less terrible than the AYANEO Flip DS.
How do you like the specs for the RG35XX-H? The price point of RG35XXSP puts it fairly in the "sure, fuck it, why not" through I would like to get a better understand of the D-pad.

A Duel-Screen retro handheld would be pretty sweet through even if the majority of the game would never use it.

I like the d-pad. The specs are good for the price point, but you should only expect to reliably play up through PS1/GBA and the lower range of N64, with anything beyond that being a bonus. There’s also Portmaster for native ports of newer low-spec games, just don’t expect to play every game with that kind of power.

I’d love a “modern DS” that looks and feels like the original, touch screen and all, while also being able to play its games at 2x or 3x resolution.

Overpriced, but it's also x86 instead of the usual ARM junk
or get yourself a New3DS/New2DSXL, it's very easy to mod and the DS loader works great. With the added benefit of playing basically as SNES and GBA games through NSUI.

Grossly overpriced, it looks like way too much of a pain to use on the software side, it looks uncomfortable, and the bottom screen is tiny.

The Paper Mario debacle got me thinking, right? I have a four year old cousin, around the same time I started playing video games. I don’t want to get her a Switch- between the (presumably for a 4 year old) large amount of buttons, the highly breakable screen, and the actual, real life sexual fetishes the troonslaters are forcing onto us, I want something a bit less complex and/or breakable. Should I go for an SNES (or aftermarket SNES) and flashcart? And if I do, what games would be best for a four year old girl?
SNES has a pretty safe library, and I'd suggest Kirby and Mario. If you get some translated games there's pretty cute Japanese games like Miracle Girls and DoReMi Fantasy.

Claymates is child abuse.
