Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Anyone still using Apple products in current year especially if it's for gaming, only have themselves to blame.
Right now I don't have a lot of money to buy a second computer. With the issues my 3DS has I should probably seriously consider a Steam deck. Luckily, these outings are few and far between.

Yeah, Nintendo has been pretty wack this year, shutting down 2 emulators, something unheard before. Faggots said Ryujinx was untouchable because the dev was in Brazil or because it had no copyrighted code. I don't trust Nintendo anymore when it comes to these things, they are hell bent on protecting their precious assets and know that the people making these ports will fold to their demands if a DMCA is issued. They know these people don't have the money to fight back. They don't care if it's legal anymore.
I think Yuzu had the way to break the DRM on Steam, and Ryujinx's developer was simply paid off. The most infuriating parts of that is not just losing the Switch emulators, it reinforces the idea (both normie perception and Nintendofag defense) that emulators themselves are illegal, which they aren't.

This can easily be disproved by pointing out the continued existence of Dolphin; Nintendo could only help make sure Dolphin didn't get on Steam, they couldn't take Dolphin itself (I'm sure they would like to, but I'd like to do a whole lot of things I have zero control over).

For the people in this thread, is there any point in investing in a RetroTink?
[...]
I cannot fathom a reason to drop 750 USD on a RetroTink 4K.
It makes sense if you don't have a tube, and have multiple old consoles, as it'll be more cost-effective than individual modding or multiple rad2x cables given scale. It would still be cheaper, and more authentic, to get a little old tube set.

As for the 4k; If you're overpaid, and already have a 4K OLED TV at 120HZ with BFI, then I guess it could be considered.

I think that the best course of action for emulating the switch successor would be to not even bother for a couple of years because the moment word gets out that one is in development (or god forbid the jurnoscum touch it), the Laywers will immediately go after it wither by trying to get the would-be devs to sell out like Ryujinx or hoping they can sue because they ended up learning absolutely nothing from what Yuzu's Team did with thier emulator (or what they did when it came to developing it.)

I'm continuously amused by the logic of the ancient Japanese salaryman. I mean, god knows how many people will download this. Easily a million+ spread out over the next few months or less. And all they have to do is hire a few guys to work up a decent source port, release it for like $20-30, and boom: millions of dollars. The game is almost 30 years old and they've been squatting on the IP doing next to nothing with it. They're just leaving money on the table.

You can't stop piracy. It's better to embrace and try to get some money out of it. But I'm preaching to the choir. And we all know that we won't see this change until the 130+ year-old crusty fuckers that run Nintendo and reminisce about the good ol' days of the love hotels will finally just fucking die.

Beware of a future where we've finally mastered immortality because that means all the corrupt elite motherfuckers will never fucking go away.
Gamecube games run natively on the Wii U. Fans got them running perfectly with the Wii U control pad. The aspect ratio in some games was wrong, but with Nintendo's resources, this would have been trivial to fix. Why didn't Nintendo just release Gamecube games on VC to help plug holes in Wii U's release schedule?

Nobody knows why Nintendo does the things it does.

If it's an intel Macbook, just put Linux on it.

I usually just add basic scanlines for old home consoles, and the dot matrix effect that adds a subtle grid to the screen for Gameboy systems.

I haven't tried the Gameboy ones yet but have been using a basic scan lines over some SNES games and like the look of it. But i like scan lines that are subtle and not too over the top.
Also been trying them with some PS1 racing games that have been upscaled. Although the scan lines make small type harder to read, I find it gives it a certain comfy look.

You should probably just get a $60 emulation handheld and keep it in your bag.
The thing was that I had a 3DS but still had a limited selection of games (the old SD card with the old data got wiped). Then I used Universal Updater and somehow rolled back the SNES emulator to an even older version instead of the fork that I wanted.

When my financial position strengthens I'll consider a Steam Deck, but again, these things happen so rarely. Maybe if I had a job where I traveled more often...

I mean, depending on what you want to play, you can get a handheld that plays all 8-bit systems, 16-bit systems, GBA, PS1 and all Arcade games up until the early 90s for the price of a couple pizzas. Systems like the Miyoo Mini + and RG28XX aren't hard to find on the for ~$40. Just skip a couple meals out and its paid for.

Retroarch isn't exactly an emulator. It's a app that uses "cores" of other emulators and advertised a sort of "all-in-one emulator". Some of the "cores" are out of date, with Dolphin and Citra (even before the takedown) for example. Sega Saturn is notorious for being difficult to emulate. What exactly are you having problems with?
just trying to play NiGHTS but with retroarc when i tried to lower the volume with the sound mixer it crashed then kinda fucked up my background and made shit run slow

Anyone here got the misterpi? heard theres another clone of the nano board but with the extra RAM built-in which makes more sense, nobody is buying this for anything else but retro vidya

Also that nigga taki seems to be working on a fpga ps1 to beat analogue which is busy with that fpga n64 nobody asked for, instead of making a portable mister to go against the analogue pocket which is the only analogue console I know anyone actually wanted

I got one of those just recently. Them chinks are a canny bunch, its great. Even came loaded with more games than I could ever play. Although, oddly enough no Mario games or Pokemon games. I am guessing Nintendo had the Yakuza boys pay the Triads a little visit, that or they just got the games off shit like Vimm who got hit hard with the nintendo piracy hammer. I grabbed them all elsewhere and stuck them on, so no issues.

I got one a week or two ago. It’s great, though it made me realize how spoiled I got on N64 upscaling because I had to mess around with shaders to make Mario 64 look acceptable to me. One nice surprise is that Pokemon Stadium 2, a game that notoriously struggles on a real system, runs at a steady 60 FPS in menus and 30 FPS in battles with no dips aside from loading screens that you wouldn’t notice anyway. It’s not for everyone, but I like it. I just wish the fan wasn’t so loud.

The thing that sold me though was TapTo support. Basically, you can map a game to an NFC card so you scan it to immediately play.

Combine that with some nice printed sticker labels and one of those 3D printed card slots like a TG16…

And now you basically have a traditional console with the feeling of physical media. You can also do stuff like make a card that runs a random SNES game or a random game with Mario in the title. It’s all completely impractical but makes the whole thing feel that much more authentic.
also it was renamed from TapTo to Zaparoo for legal reasons but most people still call it TapTo because Zaparoo is dumb

I remember several years ago I got a little "mini arcade" which was a NES-on-a-chip system (the same technology crappy Famiclones have been using for the last 20+ years) and a bunch of chinkshit, nothing recognizable, though I think there was a real butchered version of Excitebike.

I've forgotten about it; I'm not sure if I got rid of it or it's deep in storage.

Whats a good upscaler thats not insanely expensive? is there some fosh upscaler project like the misterpi?

The card thing look cool if youre a pcengine fan but would make more sense as carts tho at least for me, you could always 3D print those but tbh I care more about the hardware than the games, like I rather have retro consoles in perfect working state with an everdrive or a optical emulator than the OG games running on a shitty emulator "console", tho fpgas are good enough to replace the og hardware thank god, old consoles dying from bad capacitors and the like is huge, havent seen a working game gear in ages

OSSC?
Open Source Scan Converter.
No idea how "Open" it is, or how well it works, just know it exists in a pro and non-pro version.

People were working on an OSSC for the DE10 board that's the core of MiSTer, I guess it does exist: https://videogameperfection.com/products/dexx-vd_isl-board/
Might work with the Misterpi... might not.
With the retarded prices on the DE10 a RetroTink or OSSC Pro is probably cheaper.

On a real system, you mean N64? It's been forever since I played it aside from emulation, but I don't remember it really struggling on N64. Plays well on Steam Deck & Switch too. It ran like shit on my old phone though, expectedly.

It's not supposed to that, but after Project 64 causing BSOD, I'm not exactly surprised. Good luck figuring it out though, because not only is RA/LR documentation retarded and outdated, it (and launchbox and other shit) has overshadowed any discussion about standalone emulators as well.

Repairing them its what got me started into learning basic soldering and electronic skills. A cap costs pennies and you can update old components with better ones to extend their life, you can also easily repair copper lines in old pcbs for when they get damaged by said bad caps.
