Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

I finally went through with hacking my 3DS. Been having a blast with a bunch of DS games, like Elite Beat Agents, Bowser’s Inside Story, Super Scribblenauts etc.
I have a DSi for them because I think DS games look like dogshit on the 3DS screen.

XMBC is the best dash for the OG Xbox. The emulators on the OG Xbox aren't too bad either. Newer options like a SBC or just building your own PC is better. But in the 2000s, it was the best option for playing emulators on the couch.

Edit: Not even a day after I made my ps2 post, someone comes out and finds a way to boot unsigned code on all revisions with the DVD drive. https://www.retrorgb.com/freedvdboot-burn-and-run-ps2-homebrew-on-an-unmodified-console.html
@tehpope posted this in another thread - early doors but seems someone turned a PS2 into a Dreamcast and you can play burned DVDs on an unmodded system. Now might be a good time to grab a slim PS2 while they are relatively cheap.

Here is the guy playing a burned copy of SotC

Here is Australian game man talking about it if you are too lazy to read the blog post

Has anyone ever purchased repro Nintendo boxes? I get why purists don't like them, but I have the carts for the likes of Super Metroid, Link's Awakening and Sparkster, and don't want to re-mortgage my house for genuine bits of cardboard.

How do you want them done?

You can make hard plastic ones from blank Universal media cases and print out the covers from here:
the finished product will look simialr to this since they have retail covers as well as some custom ones for downloading

or you can get replica box scans and print out your own boxes if you use the proper paper type

Why are Emulator devs so autistic, you spend years trying to figure out the interworkings of a computer from scratch but you won't put the basic fucking effort to make a simple GUI? Is it so they can sniff their own farts about how only other code spergs who like fucking around in consoles can use it?

I'd rather keep it simple than have the abortion that is RetroArch. What emulator are you talking about?

Pretty much. It’s the same Alpha Nerd bullshit that drives the Linux spergs.

Because most devs are on the spectrum.

I only have a basic inkjet printer, so wouldn't really be worth printing them myself. Most of them I picked up in the early 2000's when they were dirt cheap, wish I'd had the foresight to get the boxed versions.

Then go to staples and have them print them up for you, should only be about $1 a box for the highest density paper IIRC.

This is by no means limited to emulator devs. I attribute it about 50/50 between Linux faggotry and the fact that writing GUIs is simply no fun at all, especially if you need to support multiple platforms.

Thanks for the input. I doubt Secret of mana needs some super emulator and I don't either, but I figured I'd ask just out of curiosity.

What it really comes down to is that being wired right for difficult programming like emulation guarantees that you’re not wired right for the soft side, like UI and usability or documentation that makes sense to anyone other than the author.

I decided to install mGBA on my PC since i heard it's a better emulator than vbAdvance, so i've playing a game called Probotector, it is pretty much a re-skin of Contra Operation C for the original Game Boy, it is quite impressive how they managed to cram a full contra game in such a limited hardware with just a few compromises, the game looks and sounds good for the system and the gameplay is pretty much the same compared to both Contra games on the NES, it is all fine and all except for one thing, i've playing that game for the past 2 days and i still can't beat it... I, for the life of me can't beat probably the easiest Contra ever made, what have i become? (:_(
