Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

The ideal retro setup must include a TV with color settings, so you can change the colors in all your favorite games to hideous eye bleeding arrangements.

Modern TVs don't have such free wheeling settings. Yeah you can pick settings like "cool" and "warm" but nothing that turns everything on the screen hot pink and green like old TV allowed.

Pausing the game just to watch Sonic turn from blue to green to orange was hours of fun.

Here's a genuine retro setup: use a tv that was found by the road, unknown make and model.
Yeah, really. I don’t remember anyone I knew ever owning an expensive Trinitron or anything. My retro TV is just the RCA one my mom bought from probably like Fry’s or Target maybe 20 years ago. It’s nice and has something called Guide+ built in, which is cheesy and campy and probably hasn’t worked since like 2005.

Here's the only image I could find of Guide+:

It's like a proto-smart TV thing, it'd display a listing of all the shows you could watch at the moment, and you could just scroll down the list and jump right to the channel. It was pretty nice, and I think it didn't even need any special setup. You just plug in your analog cable, and it worked.

Sometimes old TV menus are really charming, what can I say

So here's something that popped into my mind: those porn UMDs for the PSP, did those ever become stupid valuable? You never hear about them, but I remember seeing listings on Play Asia way back when. And then they just kinda vanished, and nobody ever mentions them when discussing gaming oddities, Surely some nutcase out there collected them all

They're around 50-75 bucks each.

I have to agree. People act like if you can't get a trinitron or pvc that its the end of the world or not worth pursuing. I don't have any horizontal scanlines on my crt but the picture is still great and I'm very excited to try out RGB. r/crtgaming is basically pvc brag center and the most obnoxious post I saw was one along the lines of "Ah now I can appreciate those oldschool games with a decent crt!" and dude has one of those PVCs. Nothing wrong with being a really devoted enthusiast(if you're very lucky or have enough cash), but after playing with my current setup I care way less about stuff like TVL. IMO factors that should matter when looking for a CRT in the wild is if it works and possibly if it has s-video or component for a better picture. I think TVL sperging is pointless since all consumer models tend to have 200-500 TVL anyway. Could be wrong though.
The two best options are always to get a later-era CRT with component inputs, or if you have the knowledge, to mod a regular CRT into accepting an RGB input.

The problem which each option, is that you have to get an RGB to Component converter or an HD Retrovision cable for each console, which are rather expensive, and doing the latter can be very risky with some TVs.

The easiest solution should be to get a TV with an S-Video input, but i've never seen one of those over here.

I hate how when I see CRT now it means Critical Race Theory (:_(

To the surprise of no one it seems my modded psx' laser has gone to shit. I suspected that was the case when certain CD-Rs wouldn't load and I was getting hit by bad load times. Was playing a difficulty mod of Breath of Fire 3 and finally battles wouldn't load. A pity. My model is an SCPH-7501 which means I need a KSM-440AEM. Never done a replacement but it looks easy enough.

The problem is that im guessing most of the KSM-440AEMs are chinese ripoffs. I found what looks like a legit one on this website but its very pricy (about 85$). I don't mind paying that much if it works but yeah..going to have to take a break for a bit.

Here is something kind of heartwarming though: I have two Fortnite addicted nephews, 6 and 8. Once they tried out Crash and Klonoa they suddenly lost all interest in their ps4 hahahaha.

I've had a nice time putting in a level or two of Hudson Adventure Island 2 before going to sleep. It's very Sam's Choice Mario but it's pretty okay at it and there's a lot of it.

Boomers hugged the TV because they loved it so much. We hugged it because we were trying to plug theses things in.
I thought of mentioning how painful it was plugging it in. Tube TVs are so fucking fat and heavy that they are planted in their spot, turning it around a bit wasn't an option. I think some TVs had more than one SCART port but I've only seen those that had one so there would be switching between different units.

You can replace with chinese parts or eat the bullet entirely and be a filthy pirate installing Xstation, im still wondering why there is no FPGA console for the PSX (there is a core for the Mister but is a prototype at best), or if you have the cash to spare, do the HDMI mod, looks like pure sex

Had some of you oil barons or drug dealers got a hand of the Analogue pocket? all the people i have seens are cooming about it including my life on gaming, game sack and MVG that is the fuck all FPGA to play Megaman battle network, wanted to see if its worth saving to get one

Mostly because it's pretty complicated(tm). Though if the PSX/Saturn core devs don't burn out and get dragged into standard scene drama, having my MiSTER replace my saturn in about a year and a half will be the absolute tits.

Just buy a PS2 for like $20 or something, it'll play all your PS1 games.

PCSX2 has been terrible for years.

Idk what you mean, it works great on nearly every game I've thrown at it. Sometimes you need to mess with the settings a little, but it's worth it for the ability to change internal resolution and the save state feature.

A friend bought himself a RetroPi. Which lead to me finding out about Retroarch.

And it made me actually enjoy emulation again (though, admittedly, right now I’m spending 75% of my time getting my library set up vs 25% playing games, kinda like my OCD problem with Plex). But a unified emulation front end that works enough of the time is a pretty cool thing (mostly MaME crashes, and that happens without Retroarch).
Plus I still have a massive PS2 and PS3 library of discs, if i want to turn on my Blu Ray drive in my PC.

I've been thinking about getting a Dreamcast for quite some time. As a console, I find it really fascinating since it was the most powerful device on the market when it came out; most of the games look like they could have come from the sixth generation. Compared to the PS1 and N64, the Dreamcast outpaced either of them technologically speaking. It really is a shame the system died the way it did, though the reasons why are just as intriguing (basically Sega making boneheaded business decisions after the success of the Genesis).

In terms of library I've already got my eye on the obvious ones (both Sonic Adventures, Shenmue, SoulCalibur, I hear the fishing games are great), and the ports it got are basically the definitive way to play (Spider-Man, Rayman 2, etc.). Are there any other hidden gems to look out for? Considering the cult status the system has gotten over the years, I'm guessing there has to be some games that slipped under the radar as well.

Yes there's tons of cult status games but be prepared to shell out a ton of money if you want official copies.

Elemental Gimmick gear is a Zelda clone
Seventh Cross Evolution is a weird genetic sim/3d platformer akin to Evo: Search for Eden that also take sup the space of a single memory card
Record of the Lodoss War is a diablo clone
D2 is a horror game
Dinosaur is another Diablo clone
Hydro Thunder's DC port is the best
San Francisco Rush 2049's dreamcast port is the best
Maken X is Shin Megami Tensei adjacent
Gigawing 1 and 2 are shooters and can be up there in price
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure's DC port is better performancewise to the PS1 version
Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2 for the DC are the gold standard for the versions of the game
Crazy Taxi 1 and 2 are worthwhile to checkout since Arcade games are kind of dead at this point
Gunbird 2 is another shooter for the dreamcast that's worth checking out
Dragon Riders of Pern remains the only console game ever made about the book series, controls like a resident evil game in many sections, really only check out if you want to see some weird shit, it is CLUNKY

Finished the Ace Combat Holy Trinity.

AC4: Sensational. 9/10
AC5: A bit too long, and some of the level design is just poor. 8/10
AC0: Wanted to like it more, but it feels very rushed. Has a unique charm to it, and some great moments. 7/10

As a trio, highly recommended.
