Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

I'm having a rather annoying issue with PCSX2 on the Steam Deck, more specifically the way the UI menu does not respond to any button input whatsoever except the directional pad. I have to rely on the touchscreen to select a game, which is serviceable when in handheld mode but not so much if I would ever want to play docked on my big screen. No problems with the controller layout when in-game though.

That and the emulator doesn't go Big Picture mode + Fullscreen by default.

I should mention that I've downloaded the emulators (Retroarch, PCSX2, PPSSPP) through the Dolphin discover app, on desktop mode, and I've downloaded the PAD.ini file from the description of this video.

Super Mario World and Super Metroid have super noticable layer problems. The first time I loaded up Super Metroid I actually laughed at the graphics fuckery.
I'm not familiar enough with Metroid and never played aside from emulation, but I don't notice SMW issues. Not saying you're wrong but I'd like to know what to look for, maybe you can provide some comparison screenshots or something.

I'd have to dig out my psp, but specifically, the spaceship at the beginning of Super Metroid is supposed to have an invisible layer, and the 9x TYL shows it as a solid black layer, so it looks like the ship is being held up with a stick.

With SMW, it's black lines right on the logo screen, when the title shows up.

I imagine the vita has less trouble than the slim did.

Oh yeah, the black lines thing definitely doesn't happen on Vita (maybe if using that particular emulator, I just use RetroArch's SNESX9 2005).

I don't know if it matters, but I tested it on the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World version of the game.

@BananaSplit² Long press the start button with the emulator running until it switches from controller to navigation and it should work as a mouse. Do the same again to switch back to controller. If you're in Game Mode, for selecting games for any emulator you just have to learn to hold the Steam/... button and use a track pad as a mouse to select anything.

Yeah I use the Steam Deck in Game Mode for games and emulators, Desktop Mode is just for adding/editing files.

I appreciate the helpful tip anyway but it's rather disappointing that PCSX2 operates in such a convoluted way, whereas the UI menu in Retroarch and PPSSPP works just fine (and keep in memory Big Picture + Fullscreen upon the next boot).

Why do the chink handhelds all look like shit? A fucking Kishi and a phone is better than any of those fucking amberlamps shitboxes, and the Kishi is a flappy piece of shit.
That 9x TYL emulator has trouble with layers, but I was using it on a PSP, not a vita.

You are not kidding, look at this freshly announced abomination, the TJD-10

The Chinese are adept at copying but if asked to come up with an original design this is what you get.

So, I'm playing Pokémon Red on my phone using My OldBoy and shenanigans are happening. The game doesn't seem to create a .sav file, the folder is empty. However, I can still save and load perfectly fine without save games. This happens all across the board with every game I've tried. Does anybody have an idea what's going on there? Because I never had this issue with My OldBoy Lite, and I really would like to import my save file to Pokemon Stadium.

They probably output the saves somewhere else on your phone, check to see if there's an option to check where the save file folder is.

The OldBoy must be coded to load save files from wherever it is actually storing them on the phone so it still works lol

Yeah look around and see if you can find where it is storing them

Yeah, about that. I combed through my phone and looked with the search function, and apparently there are no .sav files anywhere on my phone. While digging, I found an old Reddit post where someone speculated that My OldBoy puts the saves into the SRAM of the ROM itself, but it shouldn't do that, and the free version doesn't.

I thought I could get around that by syncing the app with my Google Drive, which apparently worked for the redditor in question, but so far I couldn't get it to work.

I'm a bit miffed that I upgraded at all, but the Lite version apparently is no longer supported on newer Android phones, and this was the only way I could trade with my friend.

Is that an online feature that emulates a link cable?
No, there's a built-in link cable emulation that works via WiFi or Bluetooth. There is a third party-app that emulates the link cable via the internet, though.

Edit: Oh yeah, I found a workaround for my issue. If I sync My OldBoy with Google Drive, it does create a .sav file there. I can download that .sav, import it into Pokemon Stadium, create a new .sav with Pokemon Stadium and then import that back into My OldBoy. It's a pain in the ass, but it works.

Still, I shouldn't have to do this and I still want to know what's going on. I even contacted the developer about it, but I don’t expect an answer.

retro videogame consoles, retro console games, and everything related to retro shit are welcomed here.

I could see value in this, people were talking about modding older consoles in a different thread, this one could be just talking about the older consoles.

For instance, my original SNS-002 AC adapter died, and I got a radio shack generic. That worked fine for 20 years... until it didn't.

None of the shitty generics did, so I bit the bullet and bought an SNS-002 off DK Oldies. (a lot of the ebay ones are refurbs, I figured it was less likely DK dickheads had opened this one up) That got my SNES back in action. I am much better at pilotwings as an adult.

Additionally, I forgot how much the DVD playback software on the PS2 sucked. I used to just pop the disc in and let it play, but it is some clunky shit.

Flea markets and swap meets are getting thin on older stuff, both due to hardware failure and fucking flippers. I don't like paying $30 for SNES games, but that seems to be the low point for a lot of the titles I'm still looking for.

As to hardware, I should have snatched up one of those Playstation LCD screens when they were plentiful, now they are treated like grails.

Xbox and Xbox 360 stuff is still cheap as shit though.

Stop screwing around with old video game hardware that will fail and paying people too much money for said old hardware and the games. Just get emulators and ROM's.

I have emulators and roms. I have a Super Smartjoy that allows me to use the original SNES controller with my PC.

I still like the original hardware.

I shared in good spirit, how to get a presumably dead console back into action with a simple purchase of OEM hardware. This is a problem that many people new to older hardware may run in to. Most of the online shops sell SNES consoles with a piece of shit third party AC adapter. They even tend to use the same shitty one, this one:
shitty 3rd party adapter (Do NOT BUY)

This is an ongoing issue. I remember seeing those ugly yellow fuckers start showing up around 2010 at swap meets, and did not know they were fucking garbo.

Not sure why you felt the need to shit on it.

For example, one game on my wish list is Resident Evil Nemesis for the PC. It's out of print, and tends to run about $70. I've had the ISO for years. I want the original because I want the original. I can understand why people would find that frivolous, or a waste of money, but it's what I like to spend my money on.

I see you've already earned your pink triangle, so I'm not sure why I wrote this reply. Maybe someone will find the information about the 3rd party AC adapter useful.

My old NES died right when my friend and I popped an unlicensed game we just bought.

Since the NES had a CIC chip, pirates had to find solutions with varying cleverness. Tengen made the RABBIT chip by stealing the patents, and it worked fine

However, my game (Krazy Kreatures, manufactured by American Video Entertainment) used the big brain method of frying the CIC data pin, which led to the buckbreaking of the console's caps.

Got a Genesis and 32X from a game store, though I had to order a separate video bridge from CH*NA. Plugged it in, played a bit of Virtua Racing Deluxe, it was great... Until I realised the console wouldn't shut off even when flicking the switch.

I found out that my cable had an extra pin that fed 5V between the Genesis and 32x, and it could also fry the hardware if left alone. Plucked the pins, crisis averted!
