Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

most of the gamecube catalogue is unfinished games. mario sunshine and wind waker come to mind.
Nintendo has been pretty good at painting over the patchwork, even with things like Wind Waker. Master Quest was another very unfinished title (it wasn't just supposed to be "harder dungeons" originally) but that was never really a mainstream title anyway.

I don't think I've ever really spent time with SMS all that much. I should probably try to do more research but I want to say that it and Luigi's Mansion were either supposed to be one game (and they both feature the Mario Bros. with stuff on their back) or have some sort of compatibility/crossover with each other. This is all part of the intriguing Super Mario 64 2/Super Mario 128 stuff which no one has really come up with a good answer for.

Things always get cut but the 2 i listed are blatantly unfinished. Wind waker has an obviously cut dungeon and its second half is a tedious fetch quest leaving most of the world empty. Even with one extra dungeon itd only have 6 and the second half of the game is so blatantly padded.

Well yeah.

My point was that of the unfinished titles Nintendo has pushed out, Mother 3 stands above any GameCube as having the most obvious of cuts.

Any more details on this? Was it supposed to be a full-blown sequel like TotK is to BotW?

It was an add-on to Ocarina of Time, informally named "Ura Zelda" as it was in the American gaming press.

The official line is that Ura Zelda, the 64DD add-on cartridge, WAS Master Quest, the problem is that Miyamoto has gone on record to retcon everything that can't be definitively proven (like his recent retconning of Peach to say "we wanted to make her playable, have her own story, and be a more powerful princess" from the beginning, despite Peach only playable in a small handful of games over the last 30 years).

What we do know is that it was supposed to use 64DD features and its memory to swap files between games, which included adding in your own mapped face as was demonstrated with the Mario Artist series. Unfortunately, most of that is just construed through rumors though the "additional mask quests" is interesting when you consider mapping a face to a mask.

A number of years ago, some modders wanted to do some "recreation" of it but it progressed poorly (ending with the protagonist not even being Link) but it fell apart due to infighting as these projects usually do.

Oh fuck, he actually said that? It's fucking over, they're all-in on feminist Peach now I guess.

The big fucking book that came with earthbound made it unwieldy, which stands out on your youtuber gamer shelf.

I remember a friend and his collector father got in a fight because he actually opened the book, and his dad wanted to keep it in collector condition. They had a weird hostile relationship, and the mom would often yell at the dad and tear open packaging on toys and games so my friend could actually play with them.
The dad would then sulk.

I hate all the third-party retro consoles, why does everything 3rd party have to be sharp edged shit that doesn't work right? From the AC adapters to the controller, they're designed to be painful to touch, painful to look at, and you can't escape it in retro gaming stores.

Controllers designed by Dethklok.

I did see one retro handheld that actually looked nice, but I was drunk and forgot to bookmark it. Sure as fuck wasn't Retroid or Anberchink.

Aren't those 2 different things? A lot of ura zelda content existed just from press release screenshots we saw. I imagine most of its ideas got packaged into majora's mask, while master quest was just an incentive for people to re-buy OOT on GameCube for those who already played it since it has the original version on the same disc. Whatever the unicorn fountain was going to be would've been disappointing if it was packaged into a re-release anyway, but again its probably the rewards for the fountains in MM. It just seems likely because they had several years and a sequel on the same engine. Whatever was cut was cut for a reason at that point.

I can't it took this long but I found it. For years I've been wondering what the name was of an arcade game where you rescue the President's daughter. Everyone I ever asked said it was Resident Evil 4, Turns out it was Dynamite Cop which was a sequel to Die Hard Arcade. Both games look very similar were beat em' ups and your objective to rescue Chelsea Clinton. The sequel was driving me crazy because I remembered a cruise ship or yacht was taken over by pirates and it involved guns. Which was true. I do remember beating it. One of the few arcade games I beat. Mother fucker took a lot of quarters. But I beat it.

26:04 for nightmare fuel. Don't say I didn't warn you guys!

Ura Zelda was the 64DD project that got rolled over into the GameCube release or at least that's how my memory of checking about it on GameFAQS weekly was. 90% of what you read about it online was mostly fan theories. Master Quest was never an actual release, at least not in America. It was the pre-order bonus for Wind Waker that got months early even. It was also given out in Nintendo Power promotions like bundle of Zelda 1, 2, OoT, and MM. That said, MQ isn't the finished Ura Zelda or what it was intended to be. It was just something released to encourage Wind Waker/GameCube sales.

Taking a break from FIghtcade and NeoGeo/Arcade recently and have gotten DuckStation and PCSX2 up and running. They both offer really great graphics updates and tweaking to the old Playstation 1 and 2 titles...been playing Gran Turismo 2, 3 and 4, Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi, Armored Core 1 and 2, Tenchu 1, 2, Wrath of Heaven, and a bunch of other stuff from the PS1/PS2 era that I haven't picked up since the early 2000's quite a lot lately. Pretty happy being able to visit those titles over again with Gran Turismo 4 probably being my favorite of them all and excited because I have a ton of others to run through soon. Bless the wonderful people behind Duckstation and PCSX2.
Once you've experienced PSX games with increased internal resolution and PGXP, it's difficult to go back. Note in particular the signs around the start/finish line
Also turning Tenchu into The Real Floorboard Simulator

That's pretty cool, but I'd rather play old games with their original look or in the form of a full-on remaster. I'm surprised how good that looks anyway.

For real.

GT2 looks great on Duckstation and it is clear to me that specialty emulators are all but necessary for some older systems like PS1 and 2. You think "I like the way it looked originally", and you do, but once you go HD it looks weird to go back.

I downloaded dolphin emulator and trying out the 4k texture packs and widescreen mods for old gamecube games has been a lot of fun. All my screens are 16:9 anyway, so the default aspect ratio looks bad.

I don't get why people call it Ura Zelda. Ura just means "Another."

Just call it Another Zelda.
It was just Japanophilia. iirc the name was just an exact quote from a Japanese article that just called it that since it was at that point unnamed and it just stuck. The GameFAQs page was called that and that was the largest discussion place for it and it was more fan theories than actual information. There was a "Zelda no [something]" name for it at one point but it's been twenty years and I sure as shit do not remember.
