Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

R36S looks like a really fun retro gaming handheld and I want to buy one for the Spring season

I think on eBay they‘re selling a 128GB version of it for over $75+, which is not that bad of a price.

Do you have the kind of autism that makes you blind to faces? You really don't see how her face looks like a child? Okay, fine, here's a row of images from searching for that game:

Actual degenerates talk openly about lolicon and "cunny", you don't need to sperg about moe blob faces and height in attempt to smoke them out.

Not to mention, I believe the characters depicted here are actual adults (or close enough to legal), just drawn in a stylized manner. I fail to understand the issue he's freaking out about.

You're uh, straying from the point. It's no secret that Konami's really gone downhill, but the rot started setting in ages and ages ago. Otomedius Excellent's old enough to be on the Xbox 360, and it's a pretty bad game that's aimed towards the crowd that likes loli. @Celebrate Nite brought up how they kicked Rumble Roses to the curb, and that just happened to be a nice and tidy indicator of Konami's falling quality. How many years has it been since the last good Castlevania? What even is the last good one? Portrait of Ruin, right? Hey, what do you know, it just happens to be another 2006 release. Konami was at least smart enough to hold off on ruining MGS until 5 was out, but that loli shit was a harbinger of things to come. Imagine that: you gotta appeal to a terrible crowd that's more interested in sticking tits on a six year old than gameplay quality, if you wanna sell your terrible game.

This game necessitates emulation due to Sony's restrictions on accessing this classic title from the PlayStation 1 era—an unfortunate oversight indeed. The review I discovered online is thoroughly commendable, offering a detailed yet spoiler-free analysis of the game's narrative.

Yes, Konami hasn't been good in years. Like Capcom, their best years are associated with the past, not the present. I know Square Enix has been quite divisive over the years but I applaud them for at least trying. Their purchase of Eidos wasn't a bad idea...until a series of bombs forced them to sell it to Embracer Group (which I'm pretty sure is poised on a lot of investor money and going to implode in the near future).

I don't even know what to make of Square Enix anymore. In my head, I've got them divided up into five sections:
  • AAA games aimed at both the Japanese and international market, like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts
    • these are either awful or just not for me at all
  • AAA games aimed at the western market, like Forspoken and The Quiet Man
    • what the fuck even are these? shit made entirely for investment firms?
  • Smaller scale games like Octopath Traveler and I Am Setsuna
    • hit or miss, but I appreciate the direction anyway
  • Ports of older games, like the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
    • expensive barebones janky ports; I'd just laugh 'em off if they didn't also signify how those games will never get big bombastic ports. oh well
  • Dragon Quest
    • dragon quest is sacred and no one dares mess with it, hopefully
I don't feel great when I see the Square Enix logo on a game anymore, but I liked Final Fantasy so much as a kid, it always draws my attention. That company really needs to shape things up. That company's known for their timeless RPGs, and now Sega's eating their lunch. Never expected that to happen.

Capcom may be pretty woke now, but apparently Resident Evil's still good, right? I think? Konami though, man... they didn't need DEI or BRIDGE or whatever to self-immolate. It'd be one thing if they just didn't care at all about anything but gambling machines now, but they keep actively putting out really bad games. I've really wondered what the hell's been going on there over the last decade and change.

Dragon Quest

I wish they did because Dragon Quest is in a sad state when it comes to general availability. Also there are like 4-5 ports of each game and each port has a benefit or a drawback over the others. It makes it a pain in the ass when researching the best version of which game to play. I also want a port of 9 and an english version of 10 that isnt just MTL and slow fan translation.

Also it pisses me off that the PSX era Final Fantasy games are still the fucking mobile ports of the games. Fortunately the modding community for these games (especially 7 and 9) are in a great shape and help to modernize (in a good way) these games for the PC port. Also in cases like SaGa Frontier, they actually managed to add back cut content for the original. Now if only they did a Xenogears release with a finished Disc 2 but I think I have to accept that it will never happen ever.

Speaking of which, I never really got into PlayStation games. As the redump collections are a bit too much to swallow in one go (500+ GB, sorry, don't have the space to spare) I have to be more picky. This list seems to provide a good list but I'm not sure. Some of them like PaRappa the Rapper and the various arcade-style games (Ridge Racer, fighting) tend to give off a "you had to be there"-style vibe, I already have Final Fantasy VII's PC port, and right now I'm knee-deep in a Super Metroid replay so Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night just isn't appealing to me right now. (Maybe later.) That really only leaves Metal Gear Solid.

these are either awful or just not for me at all
At one time Final Fantasy XV was on my "buy when the price goes down" list because there were a lot of intriguing elements that I liked. Why JRPGs, even semi-modern ones like Pokémon don't have cars and highways linking cities, was a question I sometimes asked, and camping with Coleman stoves seemed like a fun and wacky novelty. But even these elements were highly restrictive (the car is largely auto-piloted) and buried in a whole lot of things that aren't nearly as fun or interesting. It would be one thing if it was something akin to "I want golden-age Final Fantasy crossed with Truck Simulator", but it isn't.

I don't really need an active community, I've just been trying to play it with a friend for half a decade at this point. I will try and come back later with news.
I own Dragon Quest 9, loved it, finished it back in the day. I don't remember the multiplayer at all, but from a review I watched a while back it was a post game feature.

Yeah, so I've noticed. I like the idea of playing 4, but there's no translation of the PS1 version, and DS games are uncomfortable on things that aren't actual DSes. At least the guy that Null killed translated 5 and 6 on SNES. Apparently 5's one of those legendary SNES RPGs.

It really bothers me that there are so many untranslated RPGs even from the "golden age", and if there's not a big fanbase for it, you can forget it. I had heard that Robotrek (Slapstick in Japan), the robot-building RPG for SNES and by Enix, was completely butchered in its SNES translation but there's no entry for it on ROMHacking; you'd think someone would've at least tried to make a QoL update by now.

If you want to play 5, you’re better off with either the DS version (extra content, more story portability) or the PS2 version (better presentation, better translation than DS). The PS2 version (and subsequently DS) is actually the one that elevates a smaller villain into your blood nemesis, whereas in the SNES version he feels like wasted potential.

iirc it had a song that was an islam song or it said islam shit in it or something, but yeah there was some random background thing that might piss off muslims in the post-post911 world so dicksosoft paid their kuffar tax
Apparently that was zelda occarina of time. the first version of the game had the fire temple use a islamic chant for the ambience that was changed in later releases of the game.
