Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

The only reason I want a 3ds/2ds is for pirated DS/DSi/3DS games. emulating DS games on PC just is awkward even with a controller. Other than that, I'd kill for a Steam Deck.
if you have to use a keyboard and mouse to play an emulated DS game it just becomes a 2-window PC game, and THAT'S no good

I have HORI pads that look and function like GameCube controllers (officially licensed) with extra buttons but they don't have the pressure pads like the original GameCube controller did. How is that going to make Luigi's Mansion/Super Mario Sunshine function? Already both seem a bit awkward with the "full/off" mode. Should I buy something even more GameCube-esque (or dig out my GameCube controller and get a USB adapter) just for that function?
I know that controller, it blows. See if you can sell it and get a controller like the Retrofighters' BattlerGC or the NYXI's Warrior both of which are also compatible with the original Gamecube because of a dongle, and PC too. Switch controller have "Digital triggers" (reads: digital buttons. Just like ones on the PlayStation 1; at least the PlayStation 2's Dualshock 2 had pressure sensitivity) rather than analogues.
The last Nintendo controller that indeed had two analogue triggers/buttons were the Gamecube ones.
Both of the two listed controller may not look the best and require some minor thinkering, but least work as intended because of the two analogue buttons/triggers on the back, plus the BattlerGC gets recognized as an xInput-compliant device IIRC, just with the face buttons being on a non-xbox configuration, big deal.

Nearly all "Switch-compatible" controllers, except for some like the Retrofighters and 8bitdo ones, usually tend to have some major retardation going on. Just think back at the Retro-Bit's Sega Saturn Pro Controller, that ditched the two Analog Triggers/Buttons in favour of a digital button, and the Z and C buttons are a repeated L1 and R1 buttons. What leaves me baffled is that the prototyped used to have analogues back buttons.
That controller is so retarded, that all of its hype died when they announced this shit. The shill kept saying "yeah but when did you used the triggers in a meaningful way on the saturn" to which everyone pointed at SEGA Touring Car Championship which apparently did used the Sega's 3D Controller's analogue triggers. I'm still disappointed in that pad, they could've just made it a direct-input controller, since that is still supported on most OS and then bundle it with a dongle for the switch lol.

I rather like the HORI battle pad, other than being wired and not having motion / rumble it makes a really nice all-rounder controller for Switch games. Analogs and buttons have a really good feel.

It’s a powerhouse, but switching between retail/dev mode can be annoying if you care about using it for official games.
Heard really good things about it so i thought of getting one ( used however cause lol supporting microshit )

Since this IS the Retro thread, I felt like giving appreciation to a retro mascot. Might do more of these, not sure, so excuse the autism for a moment.

Q*BERT
Q_bert_render_edit_by_nibroc_rock-d92ssb4.png

You're an alien (?) who has to turn blocks into different colors. Other enemies such as snakes, pigs, red balls, and green things that revert your colors show up to mess you up. There's spining discs that you can step on that take you back to the top of the platform, but give you bonus points if you leave them alone. You can fall off platforms which will result in a life loss. When Q*Bert gets hit, he says a curse word (actually it's whatever language he speaks, just jumbled up as "@!#?&"). You can "finish" the game, as there are only 9 levels, but after you finish level 9 it just loops forever until you get a game over.
Always good to see Q*Bert signal-boosted. I would add a couple of things:

* The arcade machine has an electomechanical knocker that makes a loud, physical CLUNK sound irl whenever something falls off the level. It also has a 4-way joystick rotated 45°, which is pretty unique.
* Besides Wreck It Ralph, Q*Bert also had a prominent role in the Adam Sandler movie Pixels, but it's probably best to forget it.
* There's also a Gameboy Color port, originally made by a megasperg/genius hobbyist who backwards engineered the arcade game and ported it to GBC for fun, then got in touch with the IP holders to get it officially released. It adds some stuff too. The creator's Web 1.0 page is here: https://www.1000klub.com/Qbert/
* There's also a Genesis homebrew Q*Bert that's one of the best versions: https://jaklub.itch.io/mega-qbert
* You get more points for luring Coily over the edge than you do for unused discs btw
* My best score is 120,975. I think that's around level 5 or 6... can't loop the game by a longshot.

That's the same as any other Switch controller.
I've missed that part where you specified the Switch lol, since the HORI gamecube controller also gets recognized as an xinput controller on PC.
Anyways. it's niche, but there are some controller that have actual analogue buttons like this one and the 8bitdo ones.
And the switch does support analogue buttons inputs, GRID uses it for example. As of why most other switch-oriented controllers still don't have it, I don't know. I mean, go check out that Saturn controller pro, I'm still very annoyed by it and the reasoning behind it.

I thought it looked like shit and never bothered.

I have a real Saturn controller with an 8bitdo board in it, several m30 variants, several modded SEGA arcade sticks... no real reason to buy some retrobit junk. 2D style controllers with analogs bolted on was never a good idea, being able to remap d-pad to an analog is enough for many games thankfully. Even going back to the matcatz retrocon or wii classic controller it just never felt good.

I've been recently thinking of Assetto Corsa and other such sim racing games, I'd love to play them but I don't have the wheel and we all know how well Assetto plays without a steering wheel (at least without some tinketing).
Then I remembered that weird pad for the PlayStation that featured two Analogue Buttons and a twist motion, the NeGCon.
This video showcases a gameplay of Ridge Racer Type 4 with the NeGCon.

I wonder why hasn't anyone else tried to make another controller like this, it would be amazing since it provides a bit more precise movement than the Analogue sticks from most controllers (especially from 8th to current gen lol). I also need to know if it works somehow with modern games, because even though Force Feedback is out of the question, this still is interesting.
EDIT: I don't need to wonder anymore:

Speaking of Force Feedback and Playstation:
The Jogcon features force feedback. I really wonder how unwieldy this thing really is.

I wish there were more modern experimental controllers like these.

Just bought myself a Steam Deck, I need your strongest potions recommendations and sites where I can grab fuckloads of games, preferably Switch and PS3. I already have a hacked PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS, so anything on nDS/3DS/PSP/PSV are probably already covered. I also managed to grab Yuzu right before Nintendo struck them down, so I got that emulator sorted.

Ziperto does many switch, PS3, Vita etc.

Maybe it is for deaf ears, but in my quest to find some sleazy lazy gaming stick i havbe tried my first gamestick.- The M8 4K gamestick...

I first tried playing some arcade games, and god damn they are alot of fighters, i finally found Konamis top tier beat 'em up Asterix & Obleix and... well... it was unplayable cuz of the slow down. Snow Bros. worked fine though.

Later i tried Dragonball GT, a game i have some nostalgic memories of, the game froze and it seemed like the whole gametick was done for (unplugging and replugging got me to the frozen screen) but letting it be for some time solved it.

Forget about NES games though, since it takes about ten minutes before the sound starts lagging off, and it follows you out of the games so you have to reboot. SNES i also a nightmare.

Final thoughts; Don't get this, doesnt matter if it's for a snot nosed kid or a wet brained gramma, only things i see i could get some enjoyment of is some of the 8&16 bit era arcade games that doesn't take too much cpu, like one step under top tier Konami brawlers (You know, Simpsons, Turtles, Asterix)

I'm awaiting a Powkitty Y6 and also a retro game console X, so perhaps i'll be back with my thoughts about it.

and god damn they are alot of fighters
To be fair, a good chunk of that is mostly SNK/Capcom stuff with Namco/Sega being 2nd and third place, but even then, yea.... there are alot of fighters that nobody has ever heard of or even talks about.

Breakers Revenge, Fighters History Dynamite, and Outlaws Of The Lost Dynasty are just a few examples. The former made by a company called VISCO, and the latter are two Data East games with FHD being that game that got them sued by Capcom and OOTLD needing Saturn hardware to play (which is self-explanitory as to why nobody has ever heard of it).
