Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Was looking at getting one of the Anbernic handhelds cause of excellent port master ports on the Custom OS, but where do I even get the Linux version of say Shovel Knight/Sonic Mania/TMNT Shredders Revenge? Even with the games I own on Steam?

See Retro Game Corps’ guide. You can get the Linux versions through the Steam console. For Sonic Mania, you’ll have to compile it yourself if you want Plus.

GameStop is apparently testing out a new concept brick and mortar store that only sells "retro" games.

inb4 they will be over-priced just like at every other retro store
Of course it will be. Not to mention that GameStop destroyed a lot of their retro game stock over the years, stuff they could've remarketed later.

Unless they've got a plan to sell repros, though Nintendo might take issue with that. Remember about twenty years ago when the mall kiosks sold chink NES-on-a-chip plug-n-plays?

That's still a thing though.

idk about the actual hardware, but the malls that survived covid still have those little nick-nack stores that have those bootleg systems that play NES games, and Super Mario Bros. is ALWAYS playing on them.

Twenty years ago (pre-2008, pre-COVID, pre-retail apocalypse) the "nice" malls were much choosier with their tenants, which is why it was a surprise to see something like that.

Nowadays with even the A-class malls having to invite stores in that never would've been acceptable in 2004 (uniform/scrub stores, strange poorly-merchandised cosmetics stores, Mexican soccer shops, etc.) these have become more common.

"Hi. I have a mint condition Super Nintendo that's never been taken out of the box with ten games that have their box and manuals."

Gamestop: "The most I can give you is fifteen bucks store credit and a LGBTQ+ edition Deadpool Funkopop."

Obligatory:

A GS flunky in reddit (yeah, I know) said those stores won't be full retro, there's just certain ones in each area that will have the retro stuff funnelled to them. GS has been selling retro stuff online for a few years and most stores have a tiny section of it. And yeah, the prices suck and of course the cases (and carts) have those shitty price stickers that are a pain to get rid of.

At this point, you would unironically be better off with an Analogue console and a flashcart.

Currently have a rgh 360. I tried playing my totally legal backups of manhunt 1 and bmx xxx only for them to display a disc read error despite being on the 360s internal hard drive. Is there anyway i can fix this?

What are some arcade sports and simple arcade style action games worth checking out? Preferably from the GBA and earlier, but anything will do.

Late, but-
What Dreamcast titles should I check out?

So far I have tried: Soul Reaver (a visual update of the classic PSX game and it does look better, only downside is that you can't move the camera up or down but only to the sides), Ready 2 Rumble (sucked), Cannon Spike (bland), Dolphin Blue (Cult Classic), Spawn: in the Demon's Hand (fun and mindless), Silent Scope, House of the Dead 2, Virtua Cop 2, all the lightgun games are great, Crazy Taxi 2 (very meh, sorry hipsters), and a couple of shmups like Last Hope, Gigawing 1 and 2, Mars Matrix, and Under Defeat.

Do not recommend fighters. I have zero interest.

Do not recommend Sanic.
Doing it anyway. Try Soul Caliber. It's good. Has a great single player I've not seen replicated since. It's also not as autistic as other fighting games. I highly recommend trying it. Especially over something like Ready to Rumble (more on that later)

I'm not sure what's up with the other recommendations in this thread, but here's mine.

Toy Commander. Is good but the controls are stiff at first.

Since you've started on the AM2 ports, look into Crazy Taxi 1 (read a guide online for how to do the special moves), 18 Wheeler, and Virtual Tennis. I've not tried the DC version of Daytona, but I assume it's good. There's Fighting Viper 2 as well, but you don't want fighters.

Farrari 355 if you're a masicist. Metropolis Street Racer doesn't hold up (at least when I last played it) but was a classic in it's day.

If you have a friend to play with, UFC is really good. A technical fighting sim instead of a Street Fighter clone. Highly recommend.

Shenmue I've not seen mentioned. I guess someone said it but I missed it.

I also don't see a mention of Blue Stinger. It's not a good game, but a cult classic.

Super Runabout. I'm a big Runabout fan generally, but yes.

I've not played Outtrigger, Virtua On, D2, Gunbird 2, or Bangai-O, but they're considered classics.

Finally, the Dreamcast has good versions of Resident Evil 2, Fur Fighters, and Resident Evil Code Veronica.

JET GRIND RADIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I rather like Code Veronica if you haven't played, though I did the GC version.

Shenmue 1 and 2 are dumb but if you can get into them they are really special.

Typing of the Dead makes for a fun evening.

Grandia 2 is a good if very easy RPG.
Illbleed -- horror type thing
Chu Chu Rocket -- frantic cat/mouse puzzle
Mr. Driller 2 -- claustrophobic spelunking sim
Dynamite Cop -- 3d brawler
Zombie Revenge -- 3d brawler
HydroThunder -- water race
Bangai-O -- 360 degree poorly translated anime mass murder
this one underrated cult shmup called "Ikaruga" that you probably haven't heard of
Shout-out to Sega Bass Fishing but I assume nobody has an actual Dreamcast fishing controller yet doesn't know there are fishing games

tbh some of those I have played not-so-much, some a whole lot, but if I were taking some CD-Rs to a desert island it would probably be something like those. Either DC exclusive or best versions in all cases I think. You have run through most or all of the lightgun games, sry
As far as non mainstream picks or stuff mentioned here if you like older survival horror games, play The Ring. It's fucking terrible but in a funny way. I've been laughing about it for 20 years. There is an NPC that I swear is just Dennis Rodman. hilarious shitty game. Has fuck all to do with the movie besides the curse. The Alone in the Dark game for it is actually not bad.

If you like platformers the Donald Duck and 101 Dalmatians games are pretty good Crash and Spyro clones.

the kiss fps is kind of entertaining, frogger 2 kicks ass, maken x is dope, the Japanese Godzilla games are fuckin cool, Rent a Cop #1, Nomad Soul, Shadow Man, Head Hunter is another good one

coop I recommend star wars jedi power battle or gauntlet legends, fur fighters

There's tons of dope DC games but as with the ps1 or 64 the controls are usually what holds them back until you can get used to em.
I'm legit surprised none of you have mentioned this one yet.
