Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

I use 100V stuff in 120V all the time and it's been fine. Only thing I use a transformer with are things that have heat coils after we had a Japanese hair dryer kinda self combust. Maybe really sensitive electronics would be a problem, but my Famicom, Super Famicom, MSX, several JP PS2s, Onkyo CD/amp just off the top of my head have had zero issues.

But yeah later PS2s have multivoltage PSUs.

I preordered the Atari Super Pocket because I am a consumer whore for Atari shit. What are the best Evercade carts that have more modern indie stuff on them?

The Demons of Asteborg/Astebros cart seems right up my alley, so I'll probably pick up that one and one other.

Yes, I am well aware I can play any of this shit on a multitude of devices I already own for free.

Is it safe to plug a Japanese phat PS2 into a USA outlet?
I had a import PS2 fat for a few years that I never had issues with plugged in like anything else, however I did make sure to turn off the physical power switch on the back when I wasn't using it.
Similarly I have an off-the-shelf power transformer for my AV Famicom that's just from Random Japanese Electric Concern. I used it plugged in to a USA outlet with no problem, but specifically removed it from the wall if it wasn't being used.
as far as I know plugging as-is Japanese stuff in the USA generally works fine, but _just_ in case don't leave it unattended

How much indie stuff is even on there? Xeno Crisis is based, although it comes with Tanglewood, which is cringe.

There's a few. Indies Heroes 1, 2 & 3, Asteborg/Astebros, Home Computer Heroes, Xeno Crisis/Tanglewood, Alwa's Awakening/Cathedral. Maybe another couple I'm missing. A lot of them have actually started moving into full on ports as opposed to emulation. Indie Heros 3, the Duke Nukem set and Alwa's Awakening/Cathedral all have a game or two that have actually been ported to the platform.

25th anniversary of Dreamcast's release in US (9-9-99) today.

I don't think I ever knew anyone with a Dreamcast, though.
I only knew one person with one, and the only games they had for it was Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi.

I took one look at that controller and went "....huh?". The VMU was what caught my attention the most. When i played Sonic Adventure, a small chao kept appearing on that tiny screen and I thought "is this a game within a game? Is this a Tamagotchi now?"

is not Stenzek a troon?

not only he hates plugins, making duckstation useless for anything related to romhacking or even gamedev, but he's basically against FOSS too. What a retard. No wonder PCSX2 has begun to turn to shit ever since he came on board. Sure, he did port the qt UI on PCSX2 but honestly, i preferred the old ui. Not everything has to look like dolphin.
But like i said in the past: he's a rerun of Byuu but on the Sony platform rather than Nintendo's.

Anyways, I'd suggest making a duckstation fork but fixing the license and then if he tries anything to remind him how this shit actually works. If he wants to quit, fucking quit already instead of going to a week hiatus telling everyone that the bad bullies over retroarch are calling you names (while he was the one that was reprimanded by the PCSX2 team for being too aggressive). Dumb schizocow.
Seriously, to the hell with his attention seeking behaviour, you're not a super star just because your emulator is the popular choice for now, stenzek.
Another one will inevitably come to take duckstation's place, just like duckstation did for ePSXe, but unlike ePSXe, if anyone were to decompile video games for whatever reason, they'd have to use an old emulator.

For anyone wondering what I'm talking about: The devs behind the Spyro remake had to basically decompile the original games using an emulator because Insomniac displaced the original source code. Decompiling isn't an easy job to to since you're going to manually translate machine code to readable code. Stenzek's hateboner for use-cases that isn't just retrogaming is pretty much telling to everybody to go fuck off somewhere else. It looks like it's a very niche percentage of use case, but it's actually a bigger market share than you'd think. Just look at all the asset extraction or rom hacking tools done for nintendo platforms.

I guess I'll try ARES for the PS1 games rather than this emulator which still struggles with patched roms.

Why are you so obsessed with plugins? Every time you post in this thread you mention them. I'm curious what can be achieved with plugins that can't be achieved with Duckstation/PCSX2's built-in debugging tools.

IIRC Ares uses beetle-psx for its PSX emulation. I was forced to use it a while back when I couldn't download Duckstation. It's okay, but don't expect Duckstation's compatibility.

for starters, if you were to extract Spyro assets like the Skybox you couldn't do it with the built-in debugging tools but you had to use a plugin to do so (spyroedit, in this case);
pcsx2's input current system is a joke compared to lilypad which had support for PS3 Dualshock3 controllers without the need to use DsHidHide's xInput_3.dll method;
If a graphic plugin were to suck ass you could've swapped it in favour of one that worked better instead of having to change the entire emulator;
Netplay plugins are still somewhat more reliable than the built-in ones and the list goes on for a while. Most emulators are tools for developing further, and some people use either in-house plugins to figure out what to do or publicly available ones, if you're ok with just playing a video game, that's great, but I don't see why others should be barred from using third party plugins when they were able to just a few years ago.
Also, most memory editors needed a companion plugin to work.

I don't get how is it an obsession asking people to not make everything worse, PCSX2 had both debugging and plugin support, then came stenzek and then they were taboo to even mention them.

Funny how Beetle is almost always the top choice once you get a GUI to use it, even before ePSXe took the scene for a while. Also duckstation's compatilibity is only for released games, anything that's romhack (be it fantranslations or level hacks) is a crapshoot. Sometimes a game would work and then on a following boot it would refuse to work for whatever reason.

Also, while I get to talk about stenzek a while more:

this retard basically took a valid argument on why a function is not working as intended and said "lol nope I'm not gonna support this feature we've had for years because PIRACY" (on an emulator). Really, get off your high horse, retard.

He's seriously the guy that would hijack a project and turn it from FOSS to Fake Foss. I'm fairly sure that what he did with Duckstation can be litigated somehow, if I recall correctly it's not exactly "from scratch"

could you elaborate on how Duckstation isn't exactly done "from scratch"?, surely it wouldn't be as mind-numbingly retarded as the Yuzu devs using the offical SDK for thier emulator.

Holy shit, what is it with dev companies loosing their old stuff!?

Same shit happened with Konami and their Silent Hill games regarding the HD collection. it has to be on fucking purpose at this point, as in these companies are actively sabotaging their own works so no one can get a hold of them anymore.

I've been playing Wii on the Dolphin. I love the fact the image doesn't look worse than a PS2 now but I hate the fact the only way I can get it to work is still using the Wii controllers. Mario Kart on the Wii is still the worst Mario Kart. It hard to see crap from far way.
Why don’t you just connect a Bluetooth/USB controller and set up the mapping? Mario Kart Wii in particular supports Gamecube controllers, so you could map it as one of those.
>Wii is the worst Mario Kart
Absolute lunacy.

Never played Wii nor 7, but among the 3D entries I did play, 8 is easily the worst in this regard. I can't see anything coming and the better graphics actually works against it because things are less easily distinguishable.

Japan has a culture of not really valuing old work / archival purposes as much as we do. The reason every rerelease is just a rom and emulator in a cute wrapper instead of just a redevelopment is because they just toss it all afterwards. You've also got old tape drives and other old storage methods rotting out in storage because no one is checking them.
