Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

So a game collection that I figure was never going to come out (since it was announced in 2017) is coming out tomorrow: UFO 50

Basically a collection of 50 NES style games from a theoretical system called UFO that ran from 1982 to 1991. What is find interesting is that the games cover a wide range of genes along with development through line of following the advancement in graphics/gameplay/etc you saw in the NES if you play them all in release order. Looking at the reviews they are not even Warioware small bit games either but full fledge 5 to 8 hour games.
Honestly. I’m so used to seeing bait and switch woke in modern games that I saw two dark skinned women and what looks like an arab guy in the JRPG game and started wondering if they have pronouns.

well it's not that the copy duckstation or retroarch is going to disappear, if you ignore the retard's attempt at stirring up drama, it's still an enjoyable experience. unless you're trying to decompile shit in which case, in the ever relevant quote of old:
I dunno, man. After all the cases of games being patched to edit out old content, and movies and games disappearing from people's libraries after they bought them digitally, nothing surprises me anymore. If the project is compromised enough by tranny and corporate interests, I could see an open source project pushing out an update that retroactively fucks everything up as soon as your device connects to the Internet.

Maybe at the 40 year mark next year, all my NES carts will explode like a Lebanese pager.

So, uh, it's been a few months since the RHDN autism.

It sounds like there's still no successor.

Supposedly looking up the games is spoilers, so I assume there's some kind of meta plot or meta game going on? £20 seems a bit steep for what amounts to some NES games. Especially some from genres I don't like. Is it worth buying, should I wait for a sale, or just watch videos and stick to NES roms?

For me, it's the character designs that put me off.

These characters look straight out of tumblr. Maybe the blue guy I could see being from a game back then, but that's just because he's generic boxer man.

Edit: And Kotaku praised the game, calling it the best game of the year.

I raised the Jolly Roger to try it out.

This series will be catnip for autism/speed running crew cause while the games are interesting some of them are bull busting hard (especially the early ones that represent the first year or so of the NES). Some fun and interesting games in there (Mortol is a really good balance test of Reflex and Planning) but I keep naturally drifting to the late 80s series of games. For me I think half the fun is seeing the influence from my old NES catalog on various games (Camoufage is a fun Adventures of Lolo -like).

I say wait till its around $10 to $15 bucks if you are looking for quick paced "Just gotta get to the new area/see what the next game is like" mindset. If it gets added to PortMaster would be worth it if you have a handheld that runs Portmaster.

What's the best way to play Space Marine 1 these days? I own it for steam, but never finished it. I can run it on PS3 emulation if it's easier that way since I use a controller for it.

You can still download the older version or old fork. For the end user, basically nothing changes. The only ones that got screwed over are contributors, linux maintainers and people that wanted to fork it in the future to add features. current forks are still under GPLv3. Also I heard that what he did isn't exactly legal.

so, it's ass then.

This style "Modern Retro" is so lame. They have no style, what is considered "their best work" would've been considered barely mediocre back in the days. A good example of "retro" done right is Shovel Knight.

Does anybody know anything about Grandia 2? Is it better to play the PC port or the DC version. The PC Port is buggy but I managed to find some fixes online but I don't know enough about how buggy this port is that it's better to jump ship to the DC version with a better translation that alligns with the Japanese voices.

The 60FPS battles are nice, but the fact that I have to restart the game to mess with audio settings for a port that came out in 2015 is ridiculous.

EDIT: Managed to find a 60FPS patch for the Dreamcast version, it was only slightly a pain in the ass to find/apply!

The DC version without any patches is great.

in reality, he got angry not at retroarch since they forked it and called it a day, but from what I understand it's because apparently at chinese/pajeet cheap consoles repackaging his emulator and selling it. Pretty much making a PlayStation Classic with Duckstation rather than PCSX-Reloaded.

Because making this cretin move that will most likely kill the Linux version of Duckstation is totally gonna stop unscrupulous retards that were already packaging this emulator for a quick buck. Of course, extrapolating this information from Stenzek requires a level of patience that only a Saint can phantom. And even then, I don't even know if it's the truth. So, take this post with enough salt to give you a cardiac arrest.

also, seriously, all this shit for just the PlayStation while the PlayStation Arcade Boards (like that Namco board that runs Time Crisis) are still bullshit to emulate, from what I heard. (and you're still not including a way to properly decompile shit, from what i heard from the same source)
There are better ways to get people to not use your code.

I know the chinese won't care, i just want to see chinese knockoff products with the word NIGGER somewhere in the software.

Recently I have been using this program ShaderGlass to emulate crt display for my emulators on Windows PC. It has around 300(?) shaders from RetroArch, works great even for video playing.
Just open the program, point Input to your emulator/video player and choose a shader. (I like 'newpixie-crt' and 'myoldtv')

You know, i'd be fine with this, if they didn't also include that corner bend that makes the screen look warped. Never in the history of owning CRTs have i ever seen that bend IRL, whether it's regular TVs or computer monitors.

Yeah that's a weird thing to have. You can set the curvature in parameters to zero if it helps.

Sample of crt shader with the curvature set to 0 on Duckstation:

CRTs naturally have a curvature, but you're still looking at them head on and the bezels are there to cover up the extreme ends of the tube.

Whoever made those filters seem to not get that and treat the image like it's a bareass tube that needs to be conveyed over a flat plane.

And they don't change the gamma to make up for 50% of the screen being black(the lines) which makes it look unnecessarily dark.
