Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Typically you will notice hard drive noises if the vibrations are reverberating through other stuff in your setup, maybe your TV stand or cabinet.

I have an SSD in a System Talks SATA->IDE adapter inside the official PS2 hard drive rail, but I mostly use real discs or burned discs because I like it autobooting directly into the game

Would I notice a performance impact if I didn't? If things will run better on a solid state drive I might get one, but I'm just playing PS2 games that were running off DVDs back in the day an SSD seems a little overkill.
I've only ever found it useful a handful of times, myself, and started using a spare ssd recently. My old drive was a 2.5' 5400rpm laptop drive. The difference is certainly noticeable. I haven't had issues yet. YMMV.

I'm stocking up on retro handhelds before the tariffs. I will soon have one just for 8 bit and 16 bits consoles and Gameboys. One for PS1 and N64 games only and one for GC and PS2 games only.

I got one of those Genesis-style 8Bitdo controllers yesterday after they announced they were dropping the US. Now I kinda wonder if I should get a Retroid Pocket 5 just in case since my handhelds only reliably go up to maybe N64.

There are better handhelds than the Retroids.

Are these worth picking up over building your own? Apparently these don't use a DE10.
It's going to need to be basically identical to the DE10, same FPGA, same support hardware. There's a couple other not-DE10s out there like the MiSTER Pi.

The advantage to the DE10 format(if the Terasic one or others) is that all the accessories are made for that format. Really you just need a DE10 Nano style board, an IO board(which is actually optional) and a USB Hub.

I've received spam emails from various retro dealers to buy this or that before the tariffs hit. Helps with any lingering traces of buyer's regret. I'm glad I bought a bunch of overpriced crap before it became even more overpriced.

We can now have a front end for modded Ps2's with hard drives.

It supports game id, both opl and Neutrino, launch ps1 games from the menu, rip cd's directly to the console and more.

@HexFag I think this would make running ps1 games on a modded ps2 less cumbersome.
Unless I can use this for POPS or running a CD-R of a PS1 game I don't know what to do with this, I have a 1 TB HDD in my fat PS2 filled with games.

(I know POPS is built off PSBBN... kind of.)

Does a decent alternative to RetroAchievements, even offline only, exist? I like achievements for myself and I don't need to show off to other players, and the issue I have with RA is that too many of the games I want to play have main sets with some retarded achievements that require way too many self-imposed restrictions just for the sake of it

I think you can try out experimental achievements but I have no clue. I really wish those guys added support to the MisTer already because it's one of the only things holding me back from buying one.

What's that? I can't find anything either in RetroArch or RetroAchievements with that name, unless I'm mad retarded (not outside of the realm of possibility)

Is that a retro handheld, or something along those lines? nevermind, just scrolled up and found your reply and the quoted post about the Mist2

Banjo-Kazooie wiz Mark Kurko has finally released his long-teased Nostalgia 64 hack. It's not available publicly (outside of his patreon) for another week but if anyone wants to give it a shot, shoot me a DM.

Pretty damn good so far. I've had problems with his level design in the past due to his overreliance on precision platforming which I don't think Banjo handles well, and that's definitely here, but it's a real spectacle and the visual presentation is top-notch as always.

I've been on Gran Turismo binge lately. Just swapped over from GT5 to GT2 and I'm noticing that the white PSOne pad I have feels better than my PS3 pad in every regard. The most impressive thing is that a cabled PS1 analog pad is for some reason heavier than a wireless PS3 Dualshock. What the fuck was the Playstation controller design department smoking from 2000 to 2013?

The PS1 DualShock feels a LOT better than everything that came after it. The analog buttons they introduced on PS2 made button feel more squishy and the dpad less crisp, they actually improved this for the PS3 SIXAXIS/DualShock but the buttons still being analog means they will never feel quite right as the bottom of the buttons is curved rather than flat, but at least the dpad doesn't feel like mush.

The heaviness is because of the vibration weights, somewhere around halfway through the PS2's life they reduced the size of the weights significantly and that carried over to the PS3.

And the less said about PS4's 6 hour battery life monstrosity the better.

For the longest time I would use a PS1 DualShock (sometimes with an adapter) on any newer PlayStation, on PS2 you can even chain a couple adapters to force them to work with games that only want analog buttons like Star Ocean 3, but lately the cord has bugged me and I've been hoping 8BitDo makes a kit to make one wireless.
