people "complaining about the sound" were generally complaining about this shitty, tinny, mono speaker.
Not just the speaker, but the audio production approaches that tried to make the speaker sound decent, which involved extensive bass boost and swamping the audio in high-frequency noise. Developers had to choose whether their game would sound good on the speaker or on headphones, which led to some catastrophic design choices, like in the myriad Final Fantasy ports. The Final Fantasy ports are one of the places where the "GBA has bad sound" meme came from as the folks producing those made some baffling choices. See eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L_GezMMCgU

Time and time again, the same deal happens where a fanbase becomes rabbid. Honestly, if your a creative online nowadays, the best thing you can do is shun any and all interactions with your community or severely limit it. Modding and emulation communities are notoriously the worst. Especially if they are redditors because now they feel entitled to force their values onto a free product to suit their tastes.

Mega Man 2-6 is great, Castlevania 1 & 3 are great, Turtles 2 & 3 are great, Crystalis is great, Faxanadu is great, GI Joe is great, a handful of Disney games made by Capcom are great. How many of those are just games I'm nostalgic for and how many are actually worth playing today as someone who didn't play them in the late 80s/early 90s? No idea!
i think the problem with a lot of that stuff is that they're formitive entries in a genre that essentially congealed before i was ever born. it is very difficult to go back and play mega man 2 if you're used to modern platformers. with turtles, sure i bet they're good games. But ever since i was a young child "battletoads" was presented to me. yeah, as a meme because it's ball crushingly difficult sendoff. so why the fuck would i play TMNT 1

i played the shit out of duck tales II for the game boy. that one's weird. it's a really derivative platformer thats easy to play but hard to figure out the win state. it was made by a bunch of sadistic NES developers so the game is just dripping with "haha tricked you into messing up now you gotta start over" type puzzles that you gotta do in a certain order. There's no fucking way games like that would fly today, man

If it was just specific VMs per game, why do the downloads equal the original size for the full game?

You are downloading a recomp. There was even an MS video explaining it all when they launched it for the Bone.

The discs are just used as license dongles, same as One and Series games, you’ll never hear the drive spin up once the game launches.
Ok, I went back to the only big source, which is this Digital Shill article and you're right, with the exception that they're doing essentially static recompilation, please accept my apology

Across the years, we've only picked up a few titbits on the process - essentially that the original Xbox 360 PowerPC executables are reverse-engineered into an intermediate, then recompiled into x86. There's also been talk of some level of hardware compatibility integrated into the Xbox One processor to make the job easier, but beyond that, technical details on the process are thin on the ground - until now.

"Basically, we have a VGPU - or an Xbox 360 GPU that we've recompiled into x86 - and we run the entire 360 OS stack," explains Bill Stillwell, Xbox Platform Lead. "We take each game, we recompile it so that it runs, but basically we're running it still in a 360, and the team goes through the game with multiple passes."

Turtles 2 & 3 are just beat-em-ups like Turtles in Time, much different than Turtles 1. I played a lot of Turtles 1 as a kid, and even I wouldn't defend Turtles 1. Turtles 1 is bullshit.

Battletoads is one where like, why would you play it when Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is out for SNES and is better in every way?

Fuck me, though, I love me some Ducktales for NES/GB. I like the remake that came out about 15 years ago a lot too.

I know this is being cheeky but unless there's some magical all-in-one fix that someone finds that makes natively porting N64 games to PC easy emulators still have a place, like I highly doubt some of the more obscure/lesser known games like Sin & Punishment, Mischief Makers, Custom Robo, Densha De Go, etc, will get decomps. And I know the userbase is pozzed, but I do like RetroAchievements and emulators that integrate that and AFAIK no standalone game has integrated RA.

I get what you mean, but Sin & Punishment and Mischief Makers are pretty beloved by exactly the kind of people who would work on N64 decomps. I think you're looking more for stuff like Fighter's Destiny, Iggy's Wrecking Balls and Tonic Trouble.

Fuck I just got into rethawed and been playing the hell out of it, guess the rest of classic modes are dead in the water. Just stand by your racist joke, no one's ever going to be won over by an apology or stepping down. You are tainted, everything you ever touched in now tainted, the only people who give a shit about this will never give you an inch. Your racist joke have now been solidified into 100% true hoodwearing, swastika bearing racism because you bent the knee to these faggots instead of holding your ground.
Speaking of rethawed @Julius Caesar The 187th made a Sektur mod pack that im 99% will be taken down since these people are such fags. I mean you could just ask him for the files but it being from their servers is funnier. Play as the gunt instead of all the gooner models and horse girls.

If only they had embraced +NIGGER from the get go

The black box games have all aged terribly outside Super Mario Bros. If you're playing them in 2026, you're playing them for the wave of nostalgia you get from the title screen and music that dissipates ten minutes in.
Most of them, but not all. Just for fun, I looked through the list of 30 black box games and found that (all my opinion of course) three of them are still great, about a quarter are still good but I wouldn’t enthusiastically recommend them, half just don’t hold up, and a few are outright bad.
Still great today:
  • Balloon Fight
  • Slalom
  • Super Mario Bros.
Still good:
  • Clu Clu Land
  • Donkey Kong
  • Duck Hunt
  • Excitebike
  • Hogan’s Alley
  • Ice Climber (fuck you I like it)
  • Mach Rider
  • Popeye
Okay, but doesn’t hold up:
  • 10-Yard Fight
  • Baseball
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Donkey Kong 3
  • Golf
  • Kung Fu
  • Mario Bros. (play either the GBA or European NES version instead, they both fix the physics)
  • Pinball (right on the edge of Good tbh)
  • Tennis
  • Wild Gunman
  • Wrecking Crew
Bad:
  • Donkey Kong Jr. Math
  • Gumshoe
  • Stack-Up
  • Urban Champion
Haven’t played, but I would assume they’re in the Okay category:
  • Gyromite
  • Pro Wrestling
  • Soccer
  • Volleyball

Aw, that sucks. I wish I'd heard about this before trannies shut it down, THPS2 was my favorite game as a kid and I haven't been able to play the old CD since the family iMac died :(

Gun to my head, I might only be able to think of 30 worth playing for GBA too, but as someone said, GBA was really only the main handheld for a couple years.
No way am I coming up with 30 GBA games. Maybe I should dig up my flashcart, it's an old/cheap one and the UI is so trash that I only put games I thought I'd actually play on it (then didn't play most of them, eh).

it is very difficult to go back and play mega man 2 if you're used to modern platformers.
Well it works the other way around, too. Maybe e.g. Silksong is okay for people who were in middle school in 2017 and have Hollow Knight nostalgia, but if you're used to something like Donkey Kong it's hard to get worked up over it.

Mario Bros. (play either the GBA or European NES version instead, they both fix the physics)
You can fix the physics by playing the arcade version, same as many other black box games.

SMA4 is my favorite version of Mario 3, but the music was passable at best:
(Direct link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnHPJfsEJUc)
This is what it's supposed to sound like:

That being said, Super Mario Advance 3 (Yoshi's Island) didn't get nearly as mangled, and as for SMA4, I felt like the remixes to Super Mario Bros. (in World-e) were definitely off more than what they should've been.

On the subject of the e-Reader, the levels I think were on exclusive cards, but I've been wondering about the system itself, how much of the e-Reader cards have actual new data on them and how much of it is just unlocking things within the system? Like with SMA4, items like the feather are coded in.

That is a very impressive list you got there. I would also add Gunstar Super Heroes, Super Monkey Ball Jr, Astro Boy: Omega Fighter, Tetris Worlds, Tetris Advance, Block Kuzushi, and Kuru Kuru Kururin.

Could I do it from memory? Maybe? Feel like my list is pretty robust and just at a glance I'm missing Boktai 2 and 3.
Very nice, but might I add:

Bookworm
Bubble Bobble: Old & New
Chu Chu Rocket
Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX
Mario Golf: Advance Tour
Mario Tennis: Power Tour
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team
Puyo Pop Fever
Sonic Battle
Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Eternal Duelist Soul

Some of these have better versions on other systems, but your list already has ports anyway.
