Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

I've been playing a lot of Galaga lately. On the original arcade version, I can consistently break 250k and go for a good 20-25 levels at a time. My high score at the moment is 324k.

Edit: Right after I posted that, level 36, 360k.

Anyone seen this: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.eu...-new-mega-drive-game-four-years-in-the-making

New game being released for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, and it looks the shit. Properly gorgeous pixel art, and it looks like it'll play like Streets of Rage.

It's getting a full retail release. 60 bucks is too rich for me though, disappointing they're not releasing a Rom only option for emulators, because I'd happily throw them a bit of cash, if not the full 60.
It'll probably get dumped and uploaded online by someone.

I emulate most known systems up to some PS2. But my PC is a toaster. Didn't have issues with the Phantasy Star remakes. But they aren't demanding. I had problems with Dreamcast where games would look fine then you'd go to a new area and everything was borked. I had better luck with Saturn. Mostly. Although Saturn emulation is still terrible. I can't get Bug to work at all. When it actually does load a level the main character doesn't appear but you can still move around. I thought of trying the PC version. There is supposed to be some way to make sure it's compatible.

I also have an R4 for DS. Although some games won't work like Tokimeki and Dragon Quest 9. Although maybe there's a way around that now. I'm not paying for DS games anymore. Forget it.

I recently bought two repro carts, one Game boy and GBA of fan translated games that never came to the west. While it may be borderline piracy, that's what happens when the developers don't produce western release. I would make my own repro, but the materials cost hundreds, so it's cheaper to pay those that have the means to make them.

I bought myself a Saturn off ebay. Came with all the essentials. Modchip installed, 3D Controller, Action Replay. Its also Japanese. Also got a few games off of Yahoo Auctions (VFR, VF2, Fighters Megamix, D, Last Bronx). Checking out some local lots in the states on ebay for some other games (Virtua Racing, F-1 Challenge).

I preordered the Akura HDMI box for my dreamcast a while back. Came in a few weeks ago. Really enjoy it. Been using it with my capture card. Zero lag. The scanline function is pretty good. Wish it had more options, but works well for just two way switches. Got a copy of Soul Calibur finally for $10.

What emulator are you using? Have you tried using mednafen. I think I tried playing Bug on it and it worked perfectly. Not sure if it'd work on your toaster. I use a FX-6300 with a R9 270x. Check out the Emulation Wiki on GameTech to get everything set up right.

Been trying to get back into Playstation emulation. At first I thought I did something wrong until realizing that for whatever reason, the latest version of EPSXE didn't work too well (lagging sound and such). Rolling back to a previous version alleviated the problem.

I do want to get into using Dolphin but for whatever reason when it came to booting it up after the first time, it just then quits. I'd call it crashing but that would mean it froze.

I tried to use Dolphin to play Luigi's Mansion but it crashed on me pretty frequently, at least I have GBA emulators, I never got to play Mother 3 but thanks to the translation it's a pretty fun game, the "twist" is blatantly obvious but I'm still enjoying it.

They're putting out lots of Neogeo games for $7.99 us on Xbone. I love Metal Slug anything.

Too bad they're taking a cue from Nintendo and charging $8 to download an emulated game from over 20 years ago. I don't get why they keep using that business model when they're shooting themselves in the foot over it. The bottom line for it is miniscule because production costs were relevant decades ago, and they'd get a much higher volume of purchasers if Virtual Console games followed nickel and dime prices. I certainly know I'd buy a whole lot more of them if they were $2 or $3 .

I've yet to see a reason to buy anything off the VC, or any of Nintendo's online stores. It's not even like I can redownload that shit on any console I'm logged into. IIRC, you get one transfer and that's it. Maybe not even that.

Nintendo pioneered the "ripping people off for old shit" business model and then they wonder why people go to ROM sites instead.

Well, I'm guess I'm a hipster. Because I just can't bring myself to play retro games on anything other than what it was originally designed for. I have all of my consoles I have grown up with and have picked up a few here and there over the years to add to my collection. Not going to lie, it could be seen as a bit excessive to some people and yes I do know that eventually this systems are going to wear out and pretty much become paper weights. I'm willing to deal with that to experience the games the way I did as a kid. I even have my run them all through a Composite to Scart/Scart to HDMI video converter set up to help with the picture quality issues on my modern TV. I would use a CRT, but I just don't have the time for it and I don't want to have my face right up on it to be able to see anything.

I've been using a mini projector to play on my non-HDMI systems and it works pretty well. I'll eventually upgrade to an RGB monitor and buy RGB cables for everything but for now being able to project an N64 or Dreamcast onto a big wall makes for a fun time with friends.

You aren't a hipster, otherweise you wouldn't admit it.

Emulators are for posers. Good gaming just isn't for free.
There's literally nothing wrong with emulators. My current room situation has nowhere to hook up 20 different consoles, but a Wii with a bunch of emulators runs identically to all of them is perfectly fine. It's a matter of convenience, and emulators will be the only way to play these games eventually anyway.

Well, then I will excuse myself, because to tell the truth, I have some emulators too on my PC and used to play them like five years ago but now I feel like it isn't enough. But maybe the only thing that's missing for me is a good gamepad.

And on the other hand, the Virtual Console counts as emulation too, doesn't it? I have Mario Kart 64, Wario Land 4 and Wario Ware Inc.: Minigame Mania on my Wii U. Maybe I'm just nto a friend of PC gaming.

The only fact that confused were people sayings ROMs would be illegal if you didn't have the original game. Well, on the other hand I doubt this is true. I mean - tons of Let's Players do the same...

so with other words, you aren't wrong.

Overall I have emulators for N64, SNES and GBA.

However, my N64 emulator (Project 64) doesn't work as good on my (shitty) PC as the other ones. Hope you have a better working computer than me, I mean if it keeps lagging all the time it really is a torture. With the SNES and GBA one it really is a torture. I even finished the first DK Country on there. (however, with keyboard)
