Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Does anyone else is still mad about fall of TheIsoZone?
Shit, I'm still salty about the fall of Emuparadise. Granted, I responded by downloading archives of the entire NES, SNES, and Genesis libraries, but it's still a major inconvenience whenever I wanna find something outside of those few consoles, like Playstation or the Gamecube.

tbh there is difference between being DMCA-nuked and being destroyed by admin faggotry (like in TIZ case)

Luckily I never got into that entire generation of gaming. Mostly because I went for about 4-5 years without a console or a PC. But I'm not nostalgic at all for those generations. Playstation 1 games in particular did not age well. And then when you get to the 360/PS3/Wii generation most of the good shit is on PC anyway.

Star checking youtube for certain shit, it's still up.

My PS2 copies Battlefront 2 and Ace 5 have stopped working and Ive used the toothpaste method. Just in case in doesnt it doesnt work what are some good cheap alternatives
Honestly, I’d say emulation. You have a copy of the game too, so on the off chance the FBI has nothing better to do, you at least have that as a defense.

I just use Vimm’s Lair for my emulation needs.
It doesn’t have Mame (which I just got set up yay!), but it has most everything up until the Wii (excluding the Microsoft consoles)

you just need the emuparadise download workaround script in tampermonkey to get it working again. between that, vimm, cdromance and its sister blogs, and a few other places for super specific stuff, I've got everything I could ever need.

Holy shit, I can't believe that worked. The only problem I've found is that it doesn't work for Dreamcast games, but I'm sure I can find those archived on other sites.

Anyway, thanks a lot!

NTSC-J PS2 games could be a pain to find on the internet, even back when Emuparadise was still alive, to the point I just imported them and made personal copies.

PCSX2 is still spaghetti code incarnate but I hope the alternative, Dobiestation, will take the lead once it's out of WIP

That explains a lot about PCSX2's performance. I've had pretty major frame dips at times trying to play MGS3.

PCSX2 cant handle hardware mode well and software mode comes with its share of problems. You need to set up specific options to emulate the Ace Combat games properly without graphical glitches and bugs for instance.

It will be funny when RPCS3 will be able to emulate the Metal Gear Solid games better than PCSX2 itself. Albeit RPCS3 need a beefier computer in order to run, a CPU like the AMD Ryzen 5 or 7 (2000 or 3000 series) is recommended for instance

Ah, so that's why my pretty decent rig can't properly run Curse of the Were Rabbit.
There's also that retroarch ps2 core project and they made dreamcast emulation great again so who knows...

I just remembered something that might be of interest to people reading this thread, The Retro Hour podcast.
This one is really good, Galahad from Fairlight about Amiga piracy and what was going on behind the scenes.

They also have legends on like Eugene Jarvis, Rob Hubbard, Jeff Minter, Captain Crunch, Trip Hawkins not that long ago and people from old developers in general. It's very interesting to hear what was going on behind the scenes at the time. I don't know how many downloads the mp3 version have but the number of views on youtube are abysmal despite being a good and interesting podcast.

Has anyone played an emulated version of Haunting Grounds? I use PCSX2 and have been wanting to replay that game for ages but the performance of that one game is absolute shit for me. I keep reading about workarounds if you have problems with this game but I've yet to actually find someone that says what I can actually attempt to do to fix it.

It's almost laughable that out of all the games I've played on PCSX2 that one I actually really, really want to play is the only one that gives me hell.

I found an old sleeve of CD inlays and covers there was a website written on it to download templates and it still works.

So I printed official looking covers for my CD games that had no cases. Most of the Playstation disc covers have been documented:

There's also all the US dreamcats covers which have been scanned in at high resolution

for the template:

do a black or white bleed depending on the color of the spine. I know youtubers like Pat The NES Punk screeches about repro covers and labels, but paper should never be the most expensive part of a game.

Just want to mention RetroTINK 2x only works with 240p or 480i. If you want to run games from systems like Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Wii, Gamecube in 480p or above, it won't work. An OSSC or another upscaler is your only option. Its not too bad for ps2 since most games were designed with 480i in mind. But I would consider it a deal breaker with the other systems. Especially Xbox since the majority of titles run in 480p stock and a number of them can run in 720p or 1080i.

FreeMcBoot with OPL over usb might be the cheapest option, but I would check to see if the games you want to run don't have issues in usb mode. The ps2 uses USB 1.1 and the speeds aren't as fast as 2.0 or using a HDD. I know certain games that use streaming audio (like Initial D) have problems.
isn't there a way to force the DC to output to the vga box on all the games, like a boot disc?

Kind of related and maybe people already know about it but this site has an archive of game manuals. Good resource if you're emulating games.

Has anyone here soft modded a PS2 to run games off a HDD?

Any advice? How easy is the process these days?

Thinking of buying a fat PS2 to do that. I use PCSX2 but a lot of games are pretty sketchy or just dont work properly. Plus want to play on my TV and sofa rather than at the PC for a more comfy experience.
I’ve done it. Super easy and painless, as it isn’t even a mod, really. Get a hard drive adapter off of AliExpress and get a FreeMCBoot memory card while you’re there. Done. Rip your collection and grab whatever ISO files you want, and enjoy playing with no load time delays!
