That I can agree on, not to mention the fact that aside from occupation the need for boots on the ground is more limited than ever. Mercenaries were an inevitable result of the military industrial complex; way more plausible deniability and a better financial incentive to attract and keep the kind of people who enjoy being deployed

They successfully made draft dodging into a righteous action rather than a shameful one. This really needs to be put into perspective for people. Vietnam was nearly a smaller conflict overall than Korea and Korea is almost forgotten these days. Even though the death rate in Korea was many times that of Vietnam. ~40k American soldiers died in barely 3 years in Korea. Its proximity to WW2 aside.

And now they'll be triggered because we don't want to be drafted to fight in Ukraine, Taiwan or Iran. "Hanoi Jane" Fonda has been very quiet about Ukraine.

Am glad I enlisted when I did, glad I was commissioned when I was commissioned, and damned glad to have retired when I did. Shit was already starting to get weak. Was on an Army base for last assignment. They were giving training in 'consideration of others', I shit you not. This is something most normal people learn in their families as little kids. To have so many supposed adults in need of such training is a very bad thing.
