Return to Monkey Island

I'm not even mad, just sad. It's like the concept of beauty just fucking died due to politics and every TDS afflicted asshole races to make the most disgusting thing he can while raping the work they were known for.

"First time?"

I really should have known better. There is no need to get exited for anything in the current year. But I gave Gilbert a chance because Thimbleweed Park was a good, nice looking game. Who would have thought that fool would make a complete 180 & make everything as ugly & bizarre as possible?

And again: He DID IT ON PURPOSE. He knew the reaction would be very negative. What an asshole.

Anyway. Let's laugh about the "fan"art from /v/

I was going to say that it looks just like Broken Age, but Broken Age actually looks better. Wasn't a fan of the art in it, but it's definitely unique and looks like some talent went into the dreamy backgrounds. Unfortunately the plot, writing, and puzzles in Broken Age were pretty mediocre, especially in the second half where they clearly ran out of money.

I think this will be fine if the writing is on point, but it certainly got off on the wrong foot with the Apple app store art style or whatever the hell is going on.

And yeah, he clearly didn't do it on purpose. Who knows what the reason is, but cost is almost certainly it. God knows how much they had to agree to give Disney per sale to get the license.

It all keeps coming back to The Last Jedi.
To be fair this was foreshadowed in A New Hope when Obi-Wan tricked the Stormtroopers with the Jedi Mind Trick by going "These are not the droids you're looking for".

You see The Last Jedi much like the droids was not what the audience was looking for.

There is an insane commitment today in pretty much every western media to making things "groundbreaking" despite no one asking for it. The problem is that some things were killed for a reason - ugly artstyle won't elevate a work unless it's really in tune with the themes (and this ugly 2020 soulless corporate artstyle does not scream "pirate", like I wouldn't even pirate it), and going against genre convention is just repeating subversions that were dead for a reason.

And in gaming specifically, if you don't have terrible "groundbreaking" writing it's trying to make an insane scale and then cheating to make it possible in a way that makes the scale pointless.

Dude these trends go as far back as 40-50 years already.

How old is the term Oscar bait? Because that's what you're describing.

Oscar bait is usually the opposite, highly predictable plot with, at best, a possible sad ending.
And 80's and 90's movies usually only competed on the number of explosions and bodies in them rather than how many white men it can anger.

Spike Lee has been making films for way longer than that.

I think you're forgetting just how bad movies were back then. Take a look at all the Disney direct to video sequels. You had a ton of trash made specifically for rental chains, much like how content for streaming services is being made now.
