There is an insane commitment today in pretty much every western media to making things "groundbreaking" despite no one asking for it. The problem is that some things were killed for a reason - ugly artstyle won't elevate a work unless it's really in tune with the themes (and this ugly 2020 soulless corporate artstyle does not scream "pirate", like I wouldn't even pirate it), and going against genre convention is just repeating subversions that were dead for a reason.
And in gaming specifically, if you don't have terrible "groundbreaking" writing it's trying to make an insane scale and then cheating to make it possible in a way that makes the scale pointless.
