o4ma also has a stream scheduled that starts 15 minutes before the release.

EDIT: An earthquake just struck South Korea, a bit of shaking was visible on camera. Is this a sign?

Update's out, people are downloading it. Veeeery slowly.

Jesus it's been how many years and they FINALLY got a new announcer to replace that fucking god-awful one from DDRX.

Also yea the actual gameplay is BLAAAAAAAAAAND! Imagine Stepmania with no bg image (so it uses the default stock one) and the video shrunken in the bottom middle.

I hate the new BG and I don't like the new song selection, but the gameplay looks alright imo. Not too distracting. Still a downgrade from A3 visually, it's so basic and it has no charm.

Worldwide rollout being delayed.

Basically, we'll continue rollout but don't transfer your data with another player until we push a patch or else you risk your old scores going poof.

If there's one word that sums up my current thoughts about WORLD, it's "refreshing".

I mean I get why people find the UI to be a downgrade, but personally I don't think it's that terrible and I like that it's basic. Obviously I think there is legit criticism/design fixes that could be improved on over time, but given how I'm sure DDR's budget is most likely a lot lower compared to other BEMANI games and the MAX/EXTREME peak days, it's nice to see something different than here's yet another Ace re-skin. The PS2 characters and stages were already starting to get super out of date. And now it has better QoL upgrades.

The Korean guy alluded to this a few weeks ago, but I'm pretty sure the reason for the small BGA is for BPL. The IIDX stream layout seemed share some similarities with the WORLD UI. The empty space above it is probably where the pacemakers or extra camera shots will be for S4.

Quite a few people are salty about lamps being replaced with Flares which I think can be subjective; personally I always felt lamps in general weren't a healthy way to play the game and set an unnecessarily super high bar of PFC/MFC/LIFE4 or bust and I think Flares will be a less stressful alternative for lower level players to gain confidence in accuracy (keep in mind the target JP audience heavily skewers toward not pro players based on what we know from eAmuse stats).

I played World. It's very weird and I'd say it feels more than anything else "incomplete". I'm hopeful they fix the more glaring issues but here's my Kiwi Report.

The Good

The UI and UX - are very good and modernized. You have a lot of options for filtering songs (you select by groups of mixes, single mixes, difficulty levels and any combination thereof). You can do things like "Show me every 11, 12, 13, and 14 from A to World" and you'll get it and fast. The UI is simple and not very distracting, looks clean, and relegates movies to areas where the game isn't being played. The game shows you the BPM for all songs and does the scroll speed math for you.

A departure from A3 dogshit - World has all A3 songs unlocked. All DLC/Early Play, all League Songs, All Extra/Double Extra/Galaxy Extra/Course Unlocks and so on. So if you didn't grind yourself retarded in A3 and felt like you were missing out on songs - rejoice! Konami stuffed 130 songs in various dogshit A3 unlocks so it's a big pile.

A departure from 'Gold Cab Exclusive' - The version is the same on both cabinets (I swear to god I 100% thought they were going to roll it on Gold Cabs first for at least a few weeks) and they're running the same version of World - previously there was an A3 Gold and A3 Silver version for no discernable reason. I pray to Lord Jesus they are able to get World in more places than just Round 1s

Extra Stage is an Extra Stage - Life4 is no longer forced on Extra Stage.

The Bad

The UI - is very simple and features Emi and Rage in everything. Even if you play doubles, you get both of them staring at you - and they are flat 2D assets identical to all of the marketing. The UI is a very simple and casual green which works very well. However - I was shocked to learn that the UI was insanely basic and not customizable at all. Previous games has customizability options (preferred dancers, UI coloration in A-A3, etc) but I had a chance to watch some of the tryhards who were already Rank 3 or 4 in the new system, same UI. There's a lot of "Coming Soon!" on the website currently and I'm hoping UI customization is going there.

The UX is brand new - as in they didn't keep any shortcuts and made a lot of changes that feel unneeded. It was common to watch people struggle with options and there's now 4 pages of options laid out in a way that doesn't make apparent sense. It could really use another pass or just be customizable. Doubles Play is not even selectable on the main screen anymore - you have to "Solo Play > Singles > Press 8 for Doubles" almost like a hidden code. You cannot use Arrow shortcuts (no more Down, Down or Up, Up to select difficulty) or the on-machine D-Pad shortcuts (no more Left+Right for Sort) - it's all on the keypad now.

The ranking system - It's Voltex, which means it's looking at 90 of your scores, so to even max out your potential you're looking at ~23 full games with 0 failures. You also have to play 30 in each "Era" - 30 from the Classic, 30 from the Newer, and 30 from modern. Doubles and Singles have separate scores. It's your normal grindy ass system, a better version, but still an unfun grind that would largely be ignored except...

The songlist - World has 14 new songs - which is not a lot. Even A3 had ~70 out the door. There are another 6 (so far, it's only been out for a day) unlocked through the ranking system, which feels like World is going to have even more shit hidden behind the ranking system which was a lot of negativity towards A3 comes from. 14 is insanely low though, I was shocked.

It has potential but I feel like Konami is going to fuck it up by half assing post-release of a mix that already feels half assed.

Also played World, here be my Kiwi report.

Like I said before, "refreshing" is how I would describe World in one word. I feel some of the complaints about Groove Radar removed or dancers removed or BGA small are just excuses to complain about konmai bad. Like I don't think anyone has taken Groove Radar seriously lately except for the memes where boss songs' Stream value would literally overlap the difficulty select, and people complaining "waaaah the BG looks all the same now" don't remember how all the characters and stages have been the same since fucking DDR X from 2008 (they've never added any new character designs either since DDR A iirc). Of course I can understand the "incomplete"-ness and there are improvements to be made on the UI font choices and placement, but at least they appear to be easily fixable. I've seen some people throw "this should've had a location test" around, but imo I think those days are over (given how AAA gaming companies are run nowadays and arcades are dying) and I don't think DDR really has the community size compared to IIDX and SDVX to justify it. The weekly teaser previews I think were sufficient enough fwiw.

I agree with most of @Tanner Glass pros/cons. One other big pro is that the shock arrow windows aren't total ass now, so those charts are now actually playable. People seem to really like the new CONSTANT option too, though I haven't tried it yet. Indeed, there are some quirks having to do everything on the eamuse keypad, but tbf given the button limitations plus no touch screen like IIDX's Lightning Models and SDVX's Valkyrie Models (which have all but replaced their old models) it'll probably take a lot of trial and error until they make some like Gold 2.0 model w/ a touch screen and force everyone to use it like with IIDX and SDVX...it's true CRT support was sunset, but there's still 3 actively supported models of DDR machines (X, white, gold) and US players still adore white cabs to death, so I don't see that happening any time soon.

The default songlist is small but I'm okay with it. It does seem they're trying to aim towards casuals more (given the preset "categories" at the beginning with "All Music" at the very very end) without breaking the bank (2nd-tier/budget vocaloid, the loli requiem Hololive song, one Oshi no Ko song that isn't "Idol"), and the contest songs beat most of what BEMANI Sound Team shits out nowadays.

Overall I think it's a fine upgrade from the A series, has the potential "if" certain UI/UX stuff gets addressed, and also some people in the RGC really need to chill and not overreact to and nitpick the stupidest shit on the first day. At least with online OTA updates these QoL things can be addressed over time, it's not like the pre-eAmuse days where's it's like yep you're pretty much stuck with this until the next mix.

idk about LATELY, but back in the day I used to go off of that as a good indicator of what song I should avoid unless I'm 100% confident I can beat it on foot.

e.g. any song with a high JUMP rating, which usually means their stuck in the beginning/middle/end of stream patterns, and i always hated that.

I use the Groove Radar for that. I hate jumps but like streams, so the Groove Radar was useful for that.

That’s one thing I always appreciated about In The Groove, it would clearly list out how how many notes a song had, stuff like jumps, freeze arrows, and all of that. Especially helpful if you were playing on a machine that had custom songs on it.

Past a certain level of play on DDR, I don’t recall the groove radar being all that helpful. It just began to comically spread far outside of the rating image for stuff like Fascination Maxx or that awful Dead End chart.

The full songlist is fine enough (pretty much the same limitation as A3) and I like having a dedicated newbie section ("First Steps").

However - the UI has a bunch of "newbie tips" packed in - things like "when there are two arrows at the same time, jump" and "try standing with both feet on arrows at all times" which is really weird considering the game is aware of your skill level at all times. They could stand to move the newbie tips just to the designated Newbie Areas.

The weirdest thing so far is having the game be redesigned for newbies in mind but still having the actual software be so inaccessible in every place that isn't Japan. This feels like it was supposed to coincide with a much larger arcade footprint when instead it's shrinking.

Part of me wonders if DDRWorld was rushed out because of some issues with running two different versions of A3 and it really is just feature incomplete because it's what they had at the time.

It does feel like there was some sort of delay, given A3 had that oddly-named EPILOGUE nonstop course in January clearly hinting at the end, then a full month of no Golden League before an additional 2 more GLs and another nonstop course before the World announcement. BPL S3 DDR was also completely skipped.

The lanes just having those static images of Rage & Emi make me expect that buying lane skins will become a thing. But it'll be tied to Paseli and become a whole huge hassle like it was to buy access to early/late judgments way back when.

I gotta agree with this person though...

Also it seems like the hype for this game has already died out, with the harsh critics going to the theme (for obvious reasons) and the new announcer, which is a strange one, but the common line being spewed out is "it sounds AI generated" regarding the announcer or "it looks AI generated" for the graphics, which I'm noticing more and more that a lot of people are using now-a-days as the new phrase for "thing I don't like", because apparently AI automatically equals bad now.
