Identity politics in the western world goes as far back as the Hundred Years War. England entered that conflict with a French Royal from a cadet branch who spoke primarily Norman-French and who was backed by a primarily Norman-French speaking Aristocracy in order to challenge the edicts of the actual-French king and who's grandfather was dubbed Edward I as if Edward the Great had never ruled over England. They did this at the head of an army that spoke English who had themselves forcefully Anglicized their slice of the British Isles in the Shadow of Rome's collapse 800 years before and who had encouraged. In order to make the whole, miserable affair seem like something other than the succession crisis that it was, the English Aristocracy had to start speaking actual English and appealing to a common Ethnic Identity. And that's just one example.
Aware of that, but even back then indentitarianism wasn't really reflected. It's just something everyone accepts. Then comes the Nazis which made nationalism somehow bad, and the idea of an identity was quickly regarded as undesirable. Either way, identity politics isn't represented anywhere on the two dimensional political axis, both the left and right consist of people who embrace it or are against is, there's literally no distinction.
