I am resigning effective immediately from my position in CSAIL at MIT. I am doing this due to pressure on MIT and me over a series of misunderstandings and mischaracterizations.

First, Hemos and everyone else saying the same thing, the question isn't whether one can open Word files -- RMS's point is that we should discourage the use of .doc, or free software developers will be perpetually chasing Microsoft's newest version.
That said, Stallman is proposing a particularly counterproductive way to go about it. When I receive a file I can't open, I send a polite message to the effect of, "I can't read that file format. Please save the file in RTF format (Select "Save As.." from the File menu, and then choose Rich Text) and resend it. In the future, please send me files that way, so I'll be able to open them right away."

That has the advantages of a) not confusing the secretary or supplier who doesn't even know that there are different file formats with some political rant about Kenya, the Microsoft monopoly, bytes and freedom, b) doesn't convince a more knowledgeable recipient that Linux users are rabid, socially dysfunctional loons and c) is the way a decent human being behaves.

Richard Stallman probably doesn't realize that when the rest of us receive a Word attachment, it's not from a reporter seeking our views on Free Software and appreciating his tantrums as a little added color for his article, it's from a coworker just doing what any normal computer user does.

There is no fairness in the modern computing world. There are parasites obsessed with mandatory equality and if that means re-appropriating work to 'women and minorities' then that's what they'll do. If one of the most popular, principled, and enduring figureheads for free software is a fucking sperg, then he has to go.

That's really the problem with the various grievance studies-type people. They don't understand the difficulty and expertise required to develop software, and assume that because they can do political bullshit to take credit and stay afloat that that's what everyone else is doing. Fundamentally, they see tech jobs as a sinecure that white and asian men are undeservedly giving to other white and asian men, and are demanding their cut of the largess.

The thing that really pisses me off, though, is that techies are too goddamn autistic to push back with rhetoric about how all this bullshit is ableist against autists. Because it really is, and programming really ought to stay the safe place it was for autists.

Does he have a history of defending pedos? It seems in this particular situation, he was saying that when Epstien coerced a 17-year-old girl to offer sex to one of the MIT co-founders, the MIT co-founder did not necessarily know she was 17 or that she was coerced. News organizations are trying to frame it in a way that makes it look like he said the girl was a willing participant, when he's actually saying MIT co-founder had no way of knowing she wasn't a willing participant. I don't think it's fair to call that in particular "Pedo Defense shit."

What likely made the FSF cave was some other FOSS groups (with more dangerhairs) were threatening to cut ties with them, mainly the Gnome project (which bled money thanks to a women outreach program) and the Software Freedom Conservancy. That's a common tactic, cut off all funding to the group/company until they cave to their demands.

From what I understand he was being autistic about semantics and couldn't/wouldn't understand how he came off sounding like a weirdo. Something about how Minsky having sex with Giuffre wasn't rape if he was unaware Epstein coerced her into it. Also a lot sputtering about he should have known about Pedo Island despite ignoring folks like Bill Clinton being a frequent guest and that banging 16-17 year women is child rape despite it not being a crime (age of consent varies across the US) as well.
