I am resigning effective immediately from my position in CSAIL at MIT. I am doing this due to pressure on MIT and me over a series of misunderstandings and mischaracterizations.

I'm not sure if losing RMS from the FSF will be that big of a deal. While his historic contributions were absolutely vital for the growth of GNU/Linux, he seems to have been focusing more on tracking down dodgy Chinese laptops with open-sourced BIOS and trying to get the HURD kernel working.

BSD weirdos have always hated Stallman. I remember OpenBSD did a parody of him about 10 years ago as a bearded fish who wanted to control all the code for himself. There were awful comics and filk songs they made about it.

There is a real subset of open source heads who think that GUIs themselves are an unforgivable ceding of ground to the normie masses, and that people should only use text-based operating systems.

no doubt these people also believe an operating system should be a labyrinth of cryptic error messages and no documentation, instead of actually being usable (my experience of BSD/Linux type distros)
I grew up with CP/M and MS-DOS, so well used to using command-line OSs, but both distros I've tried to use I've ended up deleting out of sheer frustration - as if they had been written by autists for autists

Furious about RMS. I don't normally get this mad, but this is MIT and FSF. They should know better than to be bullied by mobs.

Lately, SJW antics have me thinking a lot about Terror Management Theory. Despite the scary name, it describes how people respond to knowledge of their own morality by embracing cultural beliefs. According to this theory, we classify ourselves as English or French or whatever because it comforts us from thoughts of our own demise. We seek others to share those cultural beliefs as a defense against alienation and loneliness.

Someone has to willingly ignore a lot of truth to read negative intent into RMS' emails. That's the opposite of what MIT trains its students to do. It's very hard to explain that zeal to abandon facts in favor of this bigoted, ignorant view of others.

A possible explanation is SJWs have rejected culture as a framework for existing and replaced it with this networked mob mentality. There's no real moral center or lasting grounds for relationships, only a transitory need to reduce others to in-mob or out-mob categories and ally or attack accordingly. It's fueled by the speed and efficiency of communications over the Internet, which mostly serves to reinforce people's perception of their mob identity.

Wonder if there's anything in network theory that could lead to countermeasures. This kind of adversarial activity we call cancel culture has got to stop.

I want to say Stallman bowed out because he saw a game he could not win. But part of me believes he endorses SJW tactics as a legitimate means of political speech and chose to go with the crowd.

As for where he will end up, people like him are much sought after by corporate America. Someone will make him feel comfortable somewhere, invite him in quietly, and give him all the space he needs.

I'd like to make a radical suggestion. Maybe, just maybe, one shouldn't agree to accept money for sexual services if one doesn't actually wish to provide them. I know this probably won't be received well, but it's true; the majority of these Epstein cases involve girls and women who were "recruited" for sex work, not coerced or threatened into it. I'm not defending a pedo, nothing excuses predatory behavior -- but I do think it's important for other girls and women to learn to take responsibility for their own choices. If you decide to accept money for sex (which is a choice you absolutely can intellectually comprehend by your teens), you are entering a pretty seedy world where bad things can happen. This of course doesn't absolve the customer of responsibility, but you wouldn't be in the position to regret providing sexual services if you never chose to sell them in the first place. Ladies, don't pal around with creepy old men, don't hang out at their homes, and definitely don't agree to give "massages" or anything else -- keep yourself safe by avoiding unsafe situations.

I feel for Stallman. The media have seriously misrepresented his remarks -- he never defended Epstein, and a close reading of his comments shows he offered a pretty reasonable take on the situation. The left tends to eat its own though, so I'm not in the least surprised.
