Rick and Morty

New episode was probably the best in this season but only due to having only a single straightforward storyline and lack of dragon dildos. There was only one joke that made me laugh and it was quickly overused until all the humour went away.

The episode didn't really have a direction. The joke about Aliens having shitty reproduction cycle falls flat because, at least the old Alien lore, they are a biologic weapon so it makes sense that they'll "burn" themselves out.
The jab against pro natal right-winger women is both old and will pass over the heads of most people.
The joke that Rick and Morty being the real bad guys (at least I think that was there) was also overused.
It's a lot like season 3, where the episodes can be summarized as gratuitous violence and some reference to well known franchise without any real twist or wit.

I think the only ok thing Justin Roiland ever did was that Trover VR game thing.

Solar Opposites is so dull and tonally so all over the place that I have no clue what they were even trying to accomplish with it. I know that it's ostensibly billed as a comedy but like Bruno said, there are no laughs to be found. All it is is Rick as an alien accompanied by a screeching retard and two clones that add nothing to the plot and a wacky clump of snot doing something in the background every now and then. The constant swearing also adds absolutely nothing and seems to be used as a replacement for punchlines that the hack writers didn't bother coming up with so they just have one of the aliens go 'fuck' every ten seconds or so. Also the whole subplot about the miniaturized people living in their wall felt like it was a repurposed pilot script from some other show Roiland was intending to pitch before settling on this and the tonal problems are even worse there. Rick and Morty is also a trashfire where Harmon and his harem of diversity hires keep inserting their personal politics and beefs into it at an ever accelerating pace until by season six or so it should be completelty unwatchable.

I was feeling the same way towards the end of the season. But episode 6 was hilarious. I think it’ll be fine

I gotta say, I kinda felt some season 2 vibes from the most recent episode.

Not season 1, but season 2. Season 2 mostly because instead of spending the whole time constantly lampshading and on a meta adventure, it actually felt like they were trying to try to tell an albeit non-linear story sorta adventure in a unique world with only occasional lampshading. That and the jokes were pretty funny (that post-credits scene was one of the hardest times I've laughed at a RaM episode in a while). 1 of 2 good episodes from this season, the other being the premiere, but that's only because that episode was written by one of the Rick and Morty OG's from season 1. Notice that every episode this season except for the premiere has been written by a newfag. It seems like they cleared out their entire fucking writing team from seasons 1-3, that's why a lot of the writing feels so tonally different. The old guard was still there in season 3 despite newfag writers that shat up certain elements and episodes (particularly and coincidentally, all of the episodes the female writers wrote, but as well as that Harmon himself writing that season finale and sadly old guard writer Mike Mchanan writing The ABC's Of Beth; basically about half of season 3 is bad). That's why it feels like they aren't really hitting any good beats in terms of humor.

I think they're talking about Solar Opposites, that other show Roiland's doing.

Maybe we should make a separate thread for that since it seems to be muddling up this one.

Too much meta humor is the problem, with a lot of animated "comedies" these days. As if the writers of these shows don't feel confident in writing an actual story, they have to constantly pull the rug out from under their own plotlines while giving the audience an aside glance and a nearly audible *WINK*.

That's because the purpose of TV shows today isn't to tell a coherent or inspiring story, but to show your fellow creators and diehard fans how woke/clever you are. Even straight message fic today seems more inspired by a desire for headpats and less a desire to actually make the world better. When I watched those "very special episodes" and afterschool specials of my youth, I didn't always sense sincerity on the part of the producers, but at least I never sensed some identity studies graduate on the other side of the 4th wall huffing his own farts.

The weirdest thing about that joke is that we never saw Summer's friend in the episode prior to this. Was she in any episode prior to this one? What's her name?

She was in quite a few episodes before this one, including one earlier this season. She first appeared in mid-Season 3 or so. Her name is Tricia.

So I was recommended a small part out of the next episode on Youtube:
  • Overly long joke that wears out its welcome.
  • Obvious punchline.
  • Disgusting for no real reason.
  • Slur word to be shocking.
  • Pedo overtones.

its a post credit throwaway joke. you idiots are overthinking things. how do you get "they're throwing out evil morty" from a gag in the train episodes.

Granted this is on reddit, but I’m questioning if this show is supposed to be a cartoon or trying too hard to be comfort food to people who think Rick and Morty are role models to underdeveloped children and young adults alike.

How much retarded does an autistic person get when you give him/her weed?

The sad thing is, Harmon probably really thought he was stepping on some toes by including an anti-Jesus joke. I'll be genuinely impressed with him when he draws the prophet Mohammed wiping his own ass with pages from the Koran.
Rick deadpan telling Morty he has to accept the lord Jesus Christ into his heart is unironically funny and doesn't come across as edgy atheist god bashing...

The part on the beach where the story conductor tells Jesus that he's imaginary does come across as edgy atheist god bashing.
