Rifftrax

If you expect to be in for the long haul you might want to start early in and go sequentially. While there isn't much for continuity from a standpoint of things that happen in the show, they build a vocabulary based on previous episodes over time.

Then there's the occasions they transcend time like when they referenced Frank back on the KTMA episodes.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. Rifftrax has a ton of call-backs and references to previous riffings they've done. Here's a helpful list that explains a lot of the running gags.

The callbacks are wonderful, something that makes them even that much more memorable. Mike, the host of the later seasons, would do callbacks from when Joel was still the host (though Mike was a writer on the show before hosting), which are hilarious.

Some of my favorite callbacks:

"Shut up, Iris!"
"Watch out for Snakes"
"Yuma! Yuma!"
"Mitchell!"
"In cars!"
"TOR-CHA!!!"
While mumbling: "better than the creeps in this joint."
"That square bugs me! He really bugs me!!!"
"I'm gonna moon you, man!!"

I don't remember the name of the tv show, but just about anytime there is a shot of the outside of a medium sized, apartment block looking building, they hum the theme song to this particular show whose name I can't remember lol. That one is the longest, most used callback that I remember. It started early on with Joel and they did it all the way to the end during Mike's reign.

That is a fine point. If you are going to be in it for awhile, consider starting from the beginning. You don't even have to watch every episode in the beginning, just find out the ones that are most highly regarded and watch those for each season. You can always go back and watch them.

Oh, and btw, what are some good KTMA episodes to watch? I've been saving those for later though now I'm thinking the time is right, I just don't know where to begin and I'd like to watch the best ones first.

By Gamera vs Guiron they start to hit their basic stride. Also that movie writes its own riffs. I mean, there's not a lot of responses to a movie that has characters recoil in terror at an approaching monster only to find out "it's only a rabbit".

Ones I like in particular are:
Phase IV
Cosmic Princess
Humanoid Woman
SST: Death Flight
City on Fire
Hanger 18
The Last Chase
Legend of Dinosaurs

City on Fire and Death Flight is them tackling disaster movies, something the show didn't do much with. Phase IV is a weird-as-hell artsy movie by Saul Bass (the title sequence guy) about ants attacking and stuff. Cosmic Princess is a couple of eps of Space: 1999. Humanoid Woman is an eastern bloc SF movie with robots and spaceships and stuff. Hanger 18 is a saucer conspiracy movie. The Last Chase is a goofy thing about the dark future when cars are made illegal by the oppressive US Government and one guy goes on a mission to stand up for the common man and make it to that libertarian paradise of California. Legend of Din0saurs is a Jaws rip-off with a dash of Japanese Not Quite A Spy Guy movie.

Thank you for those recommendations! I'm going to pick one of those and watch it tonight. Phase IV and The Last Chance sound promising.

That's it, Bob Newhart, thank you, you have no idea how much it was bothering me that I couldn't remember the name of that show.
