RimWorld - a game about worlds on the rim of the galaxy, not licking buttholes

Agreed. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why they thought Royalty was a good idea in any way. The nobility system in Dorf Fort was probably the most despised part of the game, with people going out of their way to game the requirements. Who the fuck wants to babysit a bunch of fatasses who does nothing in the colony? Who the fuck wants control taken away from their pawns, for some reward that doesn't even feel like it's worth it?

On the other hand, this one looks like it's introducing a cool way to customise the colony. The ability to assign specific roles to a colonist (more so than the job system) sounds perfect. Should have made this their first expansion.
The only really worthwhile thing in the DLC were the psycasts and the mercenary system you could get from the Empire, but there are mods that do pretty much everything Royalty did way better, so what's the point?

Definitely agree on the role system. There are always colonies I make where it seems certain colonists always emerge as the leaders, doctors or anything else, or at least I see them that way. Finally glad to have a system that will actually put it in game with actual bonuses. I'm also liking all the different choices for your ideology so you can actually make anything from Jonestown, to a town in the old west, to an Adeptus Mechanicus knockoff. If its $20, I think it's a definite buy for me.

Not gonna lie I am legitimately hyped for this expansion in a way I don't remember being for anything video game related in a long, long time.

It does sound good, but on the other hand it basically just lets me have a different way to enforce how I already play the game- playing a colony of psychopathic cannibal drug addicts beset by factions of surrounding normies.

It's out now. I bought it to fund Tynan's literary career if not for any other purpose. Not even planning on playing right now, I assume the expansion will receive some patches to smooth out the rough edges as it gets wider playtesting.

I really really really wish people would stop sucking this game's dick. It is only playable through mods. There is a reason every single person has this shit tweaked out to fuck.

The guy designing this game doesn't understand that the point of a colony management simulator is that over time you're supposed to solve problems. Your 'story' has highs and lows, but as waves come and wash away colonists, the base itself is built up and gradually becomes a safer place.

One year into this colony and I have a huge field full of animals. I've been slowly building up my actual base so I can survive raids. The game decides to just drop pod the largest raid I've ever seen directly into my pasture, behind defenses, and they start slaughtering every single animal.

If you build in the mountains you get insects which are THE WORST. So the only way to really adequately deal with this "shit just spawning in your fucking base for no fucking reason" is to build in the mountains and then also basically cheese it by building a bug room that is more likely to spawn bugs than the rest of your base so you know where they spawn.

The game isn't actually balanced to give you problems you have to prepare for. The game is balanced to throw random shit at you. Batteries explode for no reason, power goes out at least once a week, enemies just fucking magically appear behind your lines because the guy making the game throws a fucking tantrum if anyone actually has a safe colony. How do you prepare for these fucking drop pods?

I can't even get research done because I'm constantly below 6 people, I never have enough to get shit done, and the colonists I get are all retards. I can't actively recruit people and then the people I actually get are incompatible with my religion so adding a religion just further complicates the fucking game. How about a religion centered around anti-air gunnery so people can shoot down fucking drop pods

The developer has stated quite openly that if you're playing Rimworld as a colony management game you're playing it wrong. He wants every game to end in you escaping. That's your one, singular goal. The escalating challenge is designed to force you towards escape without giving you a chance to breathe or relax enough to get seriously invested in the actual world you're on. I'd say that the base game actually accomplishes this pretty well.

Although I also absolutely get where you're coming from. I mod the hell out of Rimworld; 200+ mods and counting. But then you run into another issue in that because the game is designed with an absolute upper limit on how long a colony is supposed to survive for, so the game is VERY unoptimized. It will start chugging sooner or later, and it absolutely cannot handle very large numbers. Lots of pawns also makes it chug, which I assume is probably to do with the way the mood system works, aka it's checking every single possible thing a pawn could have their mood altered by every tick or few ticks. Which is dumb, obviously.

If there's one thing the developer did incredibly well it's allow mod support to this extent. It absolutely saved it. I remember a game called Dead State that was made by some former Fallout devs and promoted to high heaven back in the day. But they also explicitly stated they weren't going to enable easy modding, and that absolutely cratered the game's potential. It's as dead as the name now, and once you've played it there is almost no replay value. A real shame, as it's simple enough that modding should be very easy.

Then he's a fucking retard. He has an autistic fixation on a single playstyle and it sucks. Nobody cares about escaping the planet. That's fucking retarded.

Sim City 2020: the goal is to build a city where everyone commutes to the bigger, cooler city for work. The cool city doesn't actually exist in-game and once you achieve 100% commute the game ends. New Jersey simulator.

BUT NULL you only have a few colonists you can't set up a functional colony that's ridiculous they would all die of inbreeding of COURSE they want to escape the Rimworlds are BAD PLACES how could you ever want to STAY THERE it makes NO SENSE to stay I can't understand why you aren't playing the way he DEVELOPER INTENDED.

Seriously though I think this is a classic case of the developer believing in his own fiction too much. He doesn't want to acknowledge that people play for fun or just to mess around instead of explicitly focusing on the stated goals that make logical sense from an in-universe perspective.

Yeah for the entire games development every single person I know has 50-100 fucking mods installed to make the game playable. Like for example their is a mod that lets you build anti air guns to prevent the bullshit that you were sperging out about and a mod to defend against solar flares. It's kinda similar to HOI4 where the base game is unplayable and modders have done 95% of the work.

Funny this should get bumped just now; last night I noticed there was the new expansion out and was wondering if I should pira- buy, if I should buy the game again?

The base game has a few problems, and after Royalty I'm skeptical that new official DLC is ever going to be worth it. But what's people's takes on Ideology so far? Is it fun? Useless? Makes the game worse?

I haven't really followed the developer, but this makes sense. It reminds me a bit of the 7 Days to Die guy, who keeps trying to force players to care about his Tower Defense mode, instead of just building and exploring in Minecraft with Zombies, and Project Zomboid, who insists on you playing his autistic, longform, builder/farmer game in a punishing Rougelike mode that kills your character and resets your progress back to the beginning every fifteen minutes.

And by "makes sense", I mean it makes sense the dev would act like that. It doesn't make sense that anyone would want to play Rimworld as anything other than a colony management game - since colony management is what it does so flipping well, while the whole exploration/questing mechanic is a miserable clusterfuck - but I guess that's indie devs for you.

p.s. as I haven't played Rimworld in well over a year, do any Kiwis have an up-to-date list of recommended mods?

I dont get mods. But then again, Im a completely vanilla DF vet. I like suffering. Losing is fun.

I started my current round with a cunt who won't do anything but social, research, and melee. Best decision. She's my princess.

Drop pods and infestations are the worst. I run mods just to stop them from happening.

I am too. I like a concise vanilla experience. DF doesn't have random shit spawning inside your fort tho (unless you're in a cave, but that's again something you can mitigate.)
I just had an infestation spawn in a workshop, destroying a few stations that need advance components, as a multi point raid started coming in. Those fuckers killed a cat and almost stole my ai core. Maybe I didn't enjoy that moment, but I'll never forget it. That's the important thing I think.
