It's hard to do that when the animal has to go to the vet for euthanasia. It's torturous enough beforehand when the ailing animal is still home and the others know their friend is sick. Coming home afterward it's impossible to look them in the eyes. It's like they know what just happened. "Hey you brought our friend back! He's in the box, right? Right? It smells like him! Hey when are you gonna let him out of the box?"

I doubt they connect those dots like we do, since they still search the house for days, but you still feel about an inch tall.

Fuck man, I need a drink.
I'm of the same opinion that bonded pets and animals that have spent their lives together absolutely need the closure when one of them dies. I've seen it when growing up, we had a pair of dogs that always snipped at and were grumpy with each other and nevwr really got along. When one got sick and was nearing the end, the other was right by his side in his dog bed and wouldn't leave his side, and for days after she was visibly lethargic and wouldn't eat.

Similar to my flock of chickens. Yeah they're dumb birds, but when the matriarch of the flock passed away this last year, for at least a few days her spot on the roost was empty at night. Whether it's habit or a genuine sense of loss, animals react to death much as we do in their own way.

I heard that he would've been fine with the riffs if they left out all the fat jokes and other stuff that felt like personal attacks towards him.

The whole story had kind of been distorted by retellings over the years, but yeah, basically it boiled down to the MST guys hearing secondhand accounts that Joe Don wanted to kick their collective asses over the Mitchell episode and running with the bit at conventions. Mike claimed that a bunch of reporters called Joe Don up and asked him about it after Mike made a joke at an event and Joe got sick of the pestering and told them he hated the show just to get them to shut up. Meanwhile, Joel says that when the company that did the DVD releases reached out to Joe Don to see if he'd record an interview for  Mitchell, he said, basically, "never seen it, didn't like that they made jokes about me, I don't hold a grudge anymore, but I don't want to revisit it", and that was that.

This worries me so much; we have a bonded pair of brother cats who are tremendous shitheads but immediately get concerned when one gets locked in the closet or another room etc. We aren't even sure wtf we'll do if/when one passes before the other.
My roommates lost one of their two cats last year and his "sister" (not from the same mother, but she'd been raised with him since she was a kitten) wandered around the house for days afterward looking for him. She was in a funk for months until they got a new kitten. It was heartbreaking to watch.

There's no doubt in my mind that they mourn their fallen comrades. Like you said, they get stressed out. They call out for their friend, they search the entire house over and over for days, they wait by any toys their friend used to play with, etc.
Yep, my cats did this when the old girl passed even though they were indifferent to each other at best. Well, the one probably looked for her for a while because she was the one he'd "pounce" on to let us know he wanted out, so the change was likely jarring for him. Then he got catnapped (mentioned this in the cat dox thread) and the other cat didn't know why he stopped showing up. It's such a bizarre, but sad sight to see housemates who just put up with each other at best search for the one other feline presence they know. She's passed on recently, and we're more convinced the catnapped boy is gone, too, so the three of them will be together again.

Now we have young siblings, so when that inevitable day happens, it's definitely going to be really hard in comparison.

Also goldfish mourn (or at least hate being alone). We had a pair and the one fish died of a swim bladder infection, and despite there being another (smaller) fish in the same tank even swimming by its side where it stayed in a corner, the other fish just would not eat and died about a week later. It was sad.

I'm literally in the gym watching ET do a special segment where George looks and almost acts just like Norm doing Norm things. My father absolutely watches Cheers to this day just for Woody, Frasier, Jack and him.

He'll be devastated to hear this news, and even more so the fact that he lived longer than him. Cheers to Norm, for my father will be drinking juice instead of beer in honor of him.

That sucks. There's a reason literally half of the country watched the final episode of Cheers.

I watched Cheers every week with my Dad. Norm was probably our favorite character so this hits hard. RIP to George Wendt.
