His role in the film “An Officer and a Gentlemen” was really good, and he helped pave the way for the likes of Mahershala Ali, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and (to an extent) Denzel Washington to get Oscars for the Best Supporting Actor role.Another classic actor down.
Louis Gossett Jr., 1st Black man to win supporting actor Oscar, dies at 87
The downside, though, is that in the same article:
Gossett struggled with alcohol and cocaine addiction for years after his Oscar win. He went to rehab, where he was diagnosed with toxic mold syndrome, which he attributed to his house in Malibu.
In 2010, Gossett announced he had prostate cancer, which he said was caught in the early stages. In 2020, he was hospitalized with COVID-19.
If only he laid off the alcohol and cocaine.
