Samus had characterization before - her animations, the way she moved, the fact that she never talked in-game (until Fusion), her posture and so on. It wasn't intended by Sakamoto, but there was never a lack of characterization, just characterization by different means than 20 minute cutscenes. That's why there was such a huge backlash - Sakamoto might have thought he was giving Samus a character where there was none before, but in reality he just replaced an established character with a different, worse character. The fact that a self-proclaimed culture critic like Bob can't grasp that is just so fucking pathetic, especially with all the Mario worship.

In fairness, Red Letter Media and the Angry Videogame Nerd do it too but they don't let it interfere with the review to the extent that Bob and the Channel Awesome gang do. If the latter's videos didn't have storylines their reviews would be about five minutes because they don't have much insightful stuff to say about what they're reviewing.
