So my English 303 teacher, basically female Bob, today boast about Black Panther surpassing Titanic as the 3rd highest grossing film in the United States. And when I mentioned that the film should thank Blade for paving the way for these movies, she said that I’m racially ignorant about the film’s existence and that it was a cultural event for black people to see a movie like this at a time like this.
"Racially ignorant?" Does this lady realize that
Blade predates
Black Panther by a good twenty years. Hell,
Hancock is technically a superhero film and predates
BP by ten. Whitewashing feels like such an inappropriate term, perhaps "blackwashing" would be more accurate?
Speaking of iconic, what the fuck is iconic about a mediocre MCU film that got overblown due to SJWs like Bob sperging about it? The film has no style and no substance what so ever. I doubt people will be talking about this along with the other MCU films two years from now when they are no longer relevant.
Black Panther is not an iconic film. It is highly commercialized pablum for dimwits like Bob to fawn over.
Superman (1978 ) is iconic. Why? It is the template for the conventional capeshit films we have today. While profit was still the name of the game in film forty years, films still had some artistic integrity and authenticity. I remember hearing a story from Tom Mankiewicz that Richard Donner bounded across the lawn in a Superman costume when he met to discuss rewriting the script.
Donner cared enough to make the audience want to believe a man could fly. His clashes with the Salkinds and producer Pierre Spengler were legendary because he fought to protect the integrity of his vision. Could you imagine Ryan Cooler fighting with Kevin Fiege on the overarching vision of
BP? There is a reason why Edgar Wright walked off A
nt-Man and why Patty Jenkins left
Thor: The Dark World and eventually moved on to direct
Wonder Woman. Hell, Joss Whedon left after
Age of Ultron because of all the producer mandates. Marvel is practically the McDonalds of filmmaking and trying to tell me
Black Panther is iconic is like telling me a Big Mac is gourmet
BP does not deserved to be uttered in the same breath as
Superman.
I forgot Blob was the only
Inhumans fan that ever lived.
Let's not tell him about
Death of the Inhumans.
