There was a standoff at the Weaver home and Randy's wife unwisely stood on the doorstep while this was going on and was shot deliberately by an FBI sniper despite the fact she wasn't armed and was holding her baby. The Feds thought it would be a great idea to kill her to encourage Randy Weaver to surrender/break the family's morale. Randy's 14 year old son, and his dog, were also killed. Weaver was alleged to have been part of the Aryan Nations. This was never proven IIRC. The sniper was charged with manslaughter in the death of Vicki Weaver. The entire fiasco reeked of severe glow-ops.

Timothy McVeigh allegedly claimed that how the feds handled Ruby Ridge was the trigger for him committing the Oklahoma City bombing.

The firearm charge happened because an actual fed who infiltrated his community or church said Randy sold him two short barrel shotguns. This is listed as a claim on wikipedia and I don't believe any gun actually existed. The charge itself didn't manifest until the fed threatened Randy with it if he didn't become an informant for the ATF, which he refused. The siege happened because the federal court decided to change Randy's court date and fucked it up so badly that the only notice he got was saying his court date was a month after it was rescheduled for. They went full siege because the ATF lied by saying Randy was a bank robber and had used the nonexistent short barrel shotgun to do said robbery. The cherry on all of this is that there were people in the community and some old war hero that were trying to talk Randy down from his holdout who had didn't know why Randy was doing all this or any knowledge about what had transpired until the ATF told them AFTER he was taken into custody. To be clear, the ATF told everyone that three people were dead as they were pulling out and hanging a banner.

Randy had spent a good chunk of his life distrusting the government in an almost Far Cry 5 kinda way, believing that they were gonna come in, steam roll anyone that didn't goose step their way and take his family away, and then the feds show up and prove EVERY fear he ever had about them right. Never forget what government overreach can do and keep your riffle by your side.
