I think it should be, similar to I have No Mouth And I Must Scream. Keep his mind in a computer. Hook it up so we can see his horrible thoughts on a screen without his knowledge. Show it to children and tell them that if they aren't good they'll end up like Robert Chipman: their brains stewing away in their own impotent hatred.
It's because of power
His hate for the rural folks is tied into the 90s/00s zeitgeist idea that rural/middle America is full of ultra conservative fundamentalist christian types who have a huge hate boner for modern pop culture, who hate anything sexual, who love war, hate anything that isn't Jesus or lowest common denominator entertainment-wise, and who vote Republican religiously and hate anyone the left love.
It was fine, very mediocre. A lot of people were just upset cause they were expecting The Office but in space and that's not what it is.
Which is completely different from a racist saying "X minority group is responsible for 52% of violent crime" or "X minority group destroyed the cities of Minneapolis and Kenosha in violent rioting over some dumb thugs that resisted arrest." Both of those statements, however biased or self-confirming of preconceived bigotry, are nonetheless based on actual. real-world events that have tangible negative consequences that can be pointed out. Any sane person will agree that violent crime and peoples livelihoods being destroyed by riots is much worse than people not liking modern pop culture or permissive sexual expression. Which is the point I'm trying to make: that the bigotry and hatred expressed by Bob and the other Twitter Blue Checkmarks is even more irrational and has even less of a basis in reality than the bigotry and hatred expressed by dipshit Nazi-larping wignats that hang out on places like Stormfront.
My parents used to watch that show back in the day, and I actually recall an episode where some faggy-sounding character was demanding that a female employee renounce her membership with some Church because it hosted or attended some conference that believed that homosexuality was a sin and shouldn't be promoted...you know, kind of like 90% of actual religious institutions at the time. Even at the time as someone who wasn't particularly religious or cared about the gay issue, the whole scene struck me as extremely vindictive and needlessly cruel if not downright McCarthyistic. In hindsight, that drama was probably playing out a dry run of modern day cancel culture.
West Wing had a couple of episodes like this during the Sorkin days. The good guy Democrats were always being attacked, shot at and demonized by evil republicans that always had the upper hand. But Martin Sheen would give a rousing speech and put them in their place.
