@John Andrews Stan was nice enough to back up my recent post about Bob's refusal to hire editors, so I'll put it back up.
I mentioned it in the thread before, but [claiming not to want to hire editors due to being unable to provide a fair wage is] an absolutely pathetic excuse. Plenty of others on Youtube hire editors to help them get videos out faster and in better quality than they can do on their own. Now, we can have a debate on whether the algorithm that Youtube uses is healthy or not, but the fact is that as the system's set up now, you get more traffic if you put out content regularly and often. If you want to grow your channel, you need to be pumping out videos constantly, and getting an editor will help ease the load, delegating some of the gruntwork and letting you focus on creating new stuff.
On the flipside, if you neglect your channel for a long time, the algorithm stops recommending your videos. When Bobby was working for the Escapist, he rarely bothered uploading anything to his channel. For the entirety of 2020 pre-firing, all of his videos were reuploads of old Big Picture episodes, which is another big no-no for the algorithm. In 2019, he uploaded merely sixteen videos, almost half of which were reuploads. It's no surprise to me that he's struggling to break 50k views on most of his videos, or even 25k. (It doesn't help that his taste is plebeian and his analysis is trash, of course.)
The fact is that a lot of freelance editors are fine with what they're getting paid to edit Youtube videos. It's not a lot, but it's usually something they're working on in their spare time. They like getting to work with content creators they enjoy and being able to say "I helped make that." And given the current financial situation, having a bit of extra income is always appreciated. Nobody's holding a gun to their head and forcing them to accept a particular sum for their work; if they don't like it, they can always decline.
To put it another way, if Bob really cared about his "industry," he'd be doing what he could to increase the supply of jobs. Instead, he refuses, not out of some sense of morality, but because of his greed and sloth. Too greedy to part with a single of his Patreon bux, too lazy to actually do the work to hire some help.
