Not just schools, but many buildings in general only have one main entrance, but a fair amount of side exits that most people aren't going through. There have been many reimaginings of the character in that time, from Robert Downey Jr.'s pugilist detective to Benedict Cumberbatch's high-functioning sociopath to Will Ferrell's...thing. Others have expanded the story in directions of their own, like the Enola Holmes novels, though those came under fire from the Doyle estate because they supposedly used the more emotional Holmes of the stories still under copyright. Because Holmes is largely public domain now, anyone is free to use the character in (almost) any way they like, and they'll have even more freedom next year as the remaining stories leave copyright. While there will be definite missteps (see Will Ferrell again), this creates a richer tapestry of fiction overall than if Holmes were still under the thumb of people that had absolutely nothing to do with his creation. And as always, you can simply ignore the stories you don't like.

Supposing your explanation is correct, their view is that only the "official" works of an author (or the corporation that owns the IP) are canonical. Fanfiction, of course, is not, so while they can write as many slashfics as they want, they know deep down that the characters aren't actually gay for each other. However, if they manage to either pressure the company externally or infiltrate it and make the changes themselves, they get the validation they seek through "official" representation. (I mean, personally, I wouldn't tie my sense of self-worth to a fictional universe, but I'm also not a mentally-stunted consoomer.)

Thing is, when a work enters the public domain, anyone can make works with their version of a character, and it will all be as official as anyone else's. You can publish your fanfics where Sherlock Holmes has graphic buttsex with Watson, make money off of it, and nobody can stop you from doing so (though maybe wait until next year so everything's in the public domain). I think you might not be able to say it's "official canon" or something, but who cares when you can make a buck?

Furthermore, the kitchen table isn't just for eating, which is part of where the term comes from. It's a communal place for a variety of activities in most households, like kids doing homework or parents going over their finances. And yes, Bob, there are actually a lot of kitchen-table issues that are much more on people's minds currently. In the case of school shootings like this one, the issue for most families is less "we need to get rid of all guns" and more "we need to keep our kids safe." Gun control has never been a popular issue, and considerably less so post-St. Floyd of Fentanyl riots, when even leftist bugmen started to realize they needed to defend themselves from Antifa's rabid footsoldiers.
