I have a strong suspicion that Bob's a victim of the same phenomenon as many of the Gen-X and Millenials, that of learning "whole word/whole language" reading. They can stitch words together but they didn't get (for the most part) proper phonics instruction. It makes reading comprehension turn to shit. My (public) school taught kids to read this way and I was confused as I already knew how to read (with phonics). Kids reading out loud sounded like little fucking robots and it sounded so weird.

it's literally teaching word-by-word as a whole word rather than as separate letters. It works for a language such as Chinese, for the whole words are separate pictograms rather than a standard alphabet. And yes, it's not only as asinine for a language with an alphabet (like Latin or Cyrillic) as you would expect, the Soviet Red Army tried using it to teach soldiers to read and found out it really screwed things up - they even found that dyslexia suddenly became a HUGE problem. So they ditched whole word/whole language and went back to phonics. Many experts have found that dyslexia is a lot more common among those who were not taught reading by phonics - going so far as to say it CAUSES dyslexia. Me, I was taught with phonics and i can read stupid-fast whereas most of my peers (who were not taught previously to going to school) struggled to read at any sort of reasonable pace.

A communist teacher/"educator" by the name of John Dewey (early 1900s) was a huge advocate for this method of teaching reading. He believed that if he could dumb down education sufficiently, that children would be more accepting of socialism. He wasn't wrong. Whole Language/Whole Word/Look-Say style was pioneered in the "Dick and Jane" readers (no phonics). It's similar to the Canadian Gage readers "A Pocketful of Sunshine" from darn near 50 years ago. If you ever wondered why Johnny Bobby can't read, this is why. I don't think Bobby's grandma had the foresight to teach any of those kids to read before they hit kindergarten. The bullshit premise behind "Whole Word" was that children should then easily recognize words without having to "decode" them like in Phonics. There was a book (and I have it somewhere) called "Why Johnny Can't Read" (1955), which was a huge takedown of the entire look-say/whole word method.

Of course Bob is thicker than pigshit and although he has no love for Communists, he doesn't even know what's going on here and if he had any clue he'd hate ALL Leftists, not just Communists.

If Bobby is a victim of Look-Say his spellings would have been be much worse; even with autocorrect I would expect some oddities, words that are spelled correctly but makes no grammatical or semantic sense in the context -- but perhaps I can't pick up those mistakes because I can't figure out what he intends to say.

I don't even think that's how the Chinese teach their children to read either. If I'm not mistaken, they use pinyin aka borrowed Latin characters to start and then introduce hanzi to simplify things.

Chinese children indeed learn words by Look-Say and lot of drilling on writing. If you live in the linguistic environment and have plenty of opportunity to look and to say, this is a very good learning method. The new generation of Chinese children have trouble with writing characters because, in the age of computers, they don't get to practice using their pens as often. Phonetic methods like pinyin is introduced later to help children with less familiar words

I think this is where Bob's total lack of theory of mind comes into play. Bob is the intellectual embodiment of the addage "when all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail". Bob does not understand nuance, or context, or different perspectives. He cannot fathom that everyone has different experiences, dispositions, beliefs, upbringings, outlooks, wants, characters and ideals. It's alien to him, he only understands Bob. As Bob is all his pathetic brain can understand, Bob is all there is. Anything that conforms to his worldview fits and is good, anything outside of that must be deliberately evil. The MCU is a masterwork to Bob, the very pinnacle of high art. As the Sistine Chapel is still a genuine marvel (no pun intended) admired by tens of thousands every year for hundreds of years, the two must be on the same level. All Bob has is his worldview, so everything must conform to it or be crushed beneath it.

I'd call it borderline sociopathic but I'm more inclined to just chalk it up as Bob being too selfish and stupid to understand that not everyone thinks like him.

I don't understand the drama around the new LotR thing. I saw the first trailer and the one released a month ago, it looked kinda meh, but nothing world-shatteringly awful. I'm a Tolkien fan (albeit not the most well-versed one; I read LotR and skimmed through the Silmarillion back in highschool), and to me the thing seems like a tempest in a teapot. Yeah, the special effects look cheap, and it's probably not going to be what the obsessive fans want, but if you don't like it, just don't watch it.

As for the clip that Moviebob responded to, that just seems like an editing choice made for the release of the clip. I doubt the actual series is full of shitty Marvel quips. From the full trailers released the showrunners don't seem to be going for a comedic tone.

I gave up trying to parse his Twitter years ago. Everything he writes there seems to be a reference to a reference to a reference to an unlinked 6 month old tweet. It has nothing to do with the character limit, Blob is just stuck too far up his own ass.

They do it in every schools. They do it here in Leafland. I even saw it in a private (religious but not Catholic) school, but thankfully the private school knew how to supplement with phonics material, though that was around grade 3-ish for me (and I already knew how to read, with phonics, before Kindergarten). You have to remember, this shit has been going on for a hundred years. Dick and Jane debuted in the fucking 1930s. Maybe Catholic School gave Bobby phonics eventually; I'm not sure. But it's a sure bet they weren't started out with MacGuffy's or other phonics-based material like that. The damage was probably already done by the time phonics instruction came around. So that might explain why Bob's reading comprehension and spelling (don't get me started; 'creative spelling' is now a thing, le sigh) is dogshit but not completely fucked.

Interesting sidenote on China: they got mindfucked early on, even before Mao took over. The educators were all commie at a certain point and competely fucked Chinese written language so that nobody could read the classics. This was all part of a deliberate effort to sever the Chinese people from "Old Culture", because muh superior fyootchah. So then when Mao took over, the students were all for it because they were brainwashed and ignorant.

The anger at the new LotR series is similar to why Bob's comparing the MCU to the Sistine Chapel draws shock and anger. LotR is a series that ranks among the great works of literature. The symbolism, the themes it touches on, and the sheer timelessness of both create a work of art that transcends mere literature. I understand why people don't like it; a lot of so-called great books have never appealed to me (such as the works of the Bronte sisters). Art is in the eye of the beholder, after all. But what Amazon is doing is taking that work, cheapening it, reworking it to fit modern sensibilities (thus removing its timelessness), and then shitting on people who point that out. They also took pains to ensure the Tolkien estate had no say in how the series was created.

Bitterly enough, many fans are realizing a truth Tolkien himself wrote into LotR: evil cannot create. It can only corrupt what good has made.

Check out the cast interviews where there is so much self-congratulatory nonsense about being "the first Puerto Rican elf!" (lol) or "the first female dwarf color!" (that one isn't even an exaggeration) or how so many of the trained monkeys actors are "activists" and you'll see where some of the dread is coming from.

There are also just a lot of red flags for people who've been sandbagged by this crap before in multiple franchises that went woke. Elrond, a character who at the time of this series should be anywhere from around 1800 to over 3000 years old, and who should be an established, seasoned, elder, is depicted as something out of a Middle-earth boy band, and looking hopelessly naive to the much savvier Galadriel (whose depiction as an armored warrior leading armies has got a whole host of problems of its own).

Some of the criticism is overblown -- although the actress playing the black dwarf Disa is the most obnoxious on this stuff by a wide margin, there's really no lore problem with having dark-skinned dwarves, especially if they want to flesh out the various dwarven bloodlines beyond the line of Durin depicted in LotR. Similarly, I don't think the occasional dark-skinned elf is anything to get worked up about.

For more concrete criticisms, wait until the show comes out. But the cast interviews and the nasty defensiveness of the showrunners is plenty of cause for concern.

EDIT: One specific line from the Disa actress -- not sure if it's been echoed by her castmates -- is especially obnoxious, and that is showing more characters "of colour" and of course female characters with so much "agency" makes this version of Tolkien so much more accessible ... as if the most popular fantasy novel ever written was so occulted and closed off because it didn't have a fat loudmouth black dwarf in it somewhere. It's the elevation of superficial qualities of race and gender over the universal human experience that afflicts every franchise that goes to the mat on "representation" and it's hitting the last franchise that needs it.

This image is panel from Legion of Super-Heroes (vol. 2) #294, which was the conclusion to venerated "Great Darkness Saga" written by Paul Levitz and penciled by Keith Giffen. I only wonder if it will be as good as "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale" as directed by Uwe Boll and starring a young Jason Statham. So far I am not optimistic. Though I do think it's fun to watch Jeff Bezos take a big pile of money and set it on fire, though that's unrelated to the topic at hand.
